I was at the Hotel Paradox for 3 nights with my team on a business trip and was attacked by bed bugs. Not surprising as my colleague had to change rooms twice upon check-in as her sheets were blood stained. I am a huge Marriott fan and a Bonvoy Silver Elite member as I had my wedding rehearsal at a Marriott hotel, so this is not a "i want my money back review", this is a "you should fix it Paradox review" as bed bugs do not go away easily.

Danielle, First off thank you for your review, we are sorry to hear that your stay did not live up to your expectations. We take all matters regarding pest control very seriously. We work with the nations leading pest control company, Ecolab, and have a rigorous process regarding any occurrence. While a single occurrence, hardly constitutes an infestation, it is a matter we treat with the respect and resources it deserves. You can rest assured that should our pest control company find evidence, as you suggest, it will be dealt with inline with the standard operating practice that all other Marriott (and most hotels in the country) adhere to. Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day.

Very hip hotel in the heart of Santa Cruz. I checked in via the Marriott App and was able to use my phone as a room key. Love this feature, I was able to go right to my room. I had a top floor (5th floor) corner room. I stayed 4 nights. The rooms are all the same. No upgrades or suites. I am a Marriott Titanium Ambassador member. Bed was not comfortable. The pillows were bad quality as well as the bedding. Being an Autograph Collection Hotel, I expect a good bed, bedding and pillows. Very disappointed and bad quality of sleep. The décor of the room is nice. The AC/Heater was very loud. Hard to get a quiet night sleep even while being on the top floor. I was also disappointed in the bath products. These are cheap refillable soap/hair/bodywash. I ended up getting my own products from Target. For this level of hotel, it really falls short of the expected experience and the price for this room was $300++ a night. Not with it. I had breakfast one day in the hotel restaurant. Very basic but the service was good. I was disappointed as well as the lack of mask wearing on property. The staff all wore masks but the other guests compliantly disregarded the policy while on property. The hotel is really showing its age and is due of a major remodel. I would come back if improvements were made and the bed/bedding/pillows upgraded.

Hello Jonathan, Thank you for your feedback, and we are sorry to hear that you did not get a good nights rest. We take pride in providing a great nights sleep, and we will be looking more deeply into the issues that affected your stay. Our hotel is in the process of planning for a very large upgrade, and you will be happy to know bath amenities are on the list of things to change out. We do our very best to provide a safe environment for all guests, only in the last 2 weeks has Santa Cruz reinstituted a mask mandate indoors, and we do out best to enforce the policy. It is my sincere hope that you will come back and visit our hotel on your next trip to Santa Cruz. Thank you for your time and have a great day.

Super nice hotel but kinda pricy, especially for the Santa Cruz area. This hotel is a part of the Autograph Collection and from I read, it’s a very limited offering from Marriott. The minute you walk into the lobby, it’s just pure luxury. The rooms are spacious, clean and very well decorated. There is a pool, but I didn’t use it. There is a restaurant and bar but didn’t utilize that either. We were there for an evening work event so just needed a comfy bed to sleep on, and that’s what we got. The hotel is off a semi busy street, but the lot was spacious; didn’t see valet so I did self-parking which was complimentary which I appreciated since most hotels charge $30-$40 per night. Hotel is conveniently located to the beach and The Boardwalk (5-/+ minute drive) and most eateries. Staff was friendly and also the hotel offers pet friendly rooms.

Be warned - $10 per day for parking. Nice staff, pool and hot tub. Loved the water dispensers to refill water bottles. Eco-friendly toiletries. Attractive use of reclaimed wood throughout. The loudest flushing toilet ever - and you could hear other rooms toilets as well. No housekeeping going on - and our room was missing washcloths, coffee maker parts, shampoo… comfy bed and efficient HVAC. Centrally located.

Let me start with the good. Good location. Close to downtown but not in downtown meant, generally, some peace and quiet. Beautiful lobby. Nicely decorated rooms (although I am not a big fan of sliding barn doors going into the bathroom). The bathroom was good sized. Just not a fan of this type of door in this type of application. We were on the fifth floor overlooking the pool. If it was foggy in the morning (which it was the three days were there), it was obvious since that direction was toward the ocean. It kind of gave you an indication of the weather for the day. The opposing side of the hotel would have been overlooking trees and Santa Cruz County government buildings. In hindsight I might have preferred that view. Plus no yelling and splashing from the pool down below. The staff was exceptional. From check-in personnel to maintenance folks (our in room refrigerator accidentally defrosted when we didn't shut the door tightly enough) to breakfast staff, all really good. As Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Members we were allowed a free breakfast. The options, although limited, were good. One of the highlights of our stay. Now for the bad. This building is a former Holiday Inn reimagined to be an upscale, boutiquey type of hotel. As I said, the lobby is beautiful. The adjoining restaurant and public spaces are all really nice. But at the end of the day the rooms are just a middle of the road hotel rooms especially given that they are outside corridors. That meant we could never really open our curtains because other folks would go traipsing by. I would prefer a room with a view. It all felt a little claustrophobic especially given that this is an Autograph Collection Property. Finally, know that I picked this hotel not only because it was a Marriott property but also because I could see the Santa Cruz Riverwalk Park adjacent to the hotel. It had a pedestrian bridge over the San Lorenzo River that took you right into downtown Santa Cruz. What I could not see was the homeless population camped in the park and along the river. In summary, if that element was not there I would have given this review a 4. So while we had to walk down to Soquel Ave to get into town, the hotel as a whole is a nice place to stay.
