Detailed Reviews
Mason Beach Inn
Great location! It is quiet, spacious rooms with comfortable beds, close to restaurants, to the beach, free parking and it’s easy to find the hotel when you take the freeway exit.
We loved our room which overlooked the middle of the pool (room 206) and the best part was the windows open wide to allow a beautiful, cool ocean breeze to come through. If you prefer quiet and you do not like the sound of kids splashing in a pool, then I would not suggest this side. We did not mind hearing the fun but we did mind the high pitch sound of the hot tub when it’s turned on. It would be nice to put a sign up to remind guests to shut off the tub once they exit. They just get out and leave the tub running which generates the high pitched sound.
The housekeeping staff are friendly and the rooms are very clean.
The room offers a fridge filled with snacks and beverages (a mini-bar) with items reasonably priced. I would have much preferred to have a fridge I could use. We always travel with food as I have dietary issues, especially breakfast foods. Based on how many families were staying at the hotel, I'm sure I am not alone with that desire. A fridge in the lobby offering the same items would be a much better addition to the hotel. Luckily, I had a small collapsible cooler that I made daily trips to the ice machine to keep our items fresh.
The room offers a Keurig-style coffee machine located in a cupboard. I would have preferred it out on the counter and more accessible. It was inconvenient and cumbersome to take it out and it did not seem like there was a close outlet to plug it in to. Thankfully there was coffee in the lobby which is what I did every morning.
Yes, they do offer coffee and tea all day at the front desk and a couple of inexpensive granola bars in the morning. However, they only had coffeemate and the one morning they only had flavored, which my husband will not touch. It would be nice to offer real cream to guests and perhaps some fresh fruit in the morning.
The front desk was friendly enough when we arrived but offered no information about any of the amenities like, the bike rentals. I noticed the bikes outside and was excited at the thought of using them. However they are not complimentary; $10.00 per hour. I do understand a fee for a maintenance fund but we felt the charge was a little high as we were hoping to ride around town and include some stops, like lunch. We chose to just walk everywhere.
Overall, it’s a lovely hotel and we would stay here again. We live in Simi Valley so it’s nice to have a quick getaway to Santa Barbara.

We stayed for five nights over spring break, and had a wonderful time. The location is perfect to enjoy the beach and excellent restaurants in the vicinity, many within walking distance. The pool was not too crowded even though it was spring break, and guests were mostly wearing masks and followed social distancing guidelines. Pool towels are provided, which was nice.
The room was clean and beds comfortable. I recommend adding a shelf or holder in the shower for soap/shampoo/conditioner, but the shower itself was nice and spacious, and had really nice towels. No housekeeping due to Covid, but they gladly let us exchange our towels as needed. The rooms also have a Keurig - although we didn’t use it because we brought our own.
We would definitely stay here again!

I was pleasantly surprised with the Mason Beach Inn. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The location was peaceful and quiet but in a prime location to State Street, Bars, Coffee shops, restaurants, East and West Beach and Sterns Warf to name a few. Paid parking is available onsite which is a big plus as parking in Santa Barbara is difficult at best. Coffee, tea, cereal, fruit and cookies are free and avalible in the reception area 24x7. Staff offered a complementary welcome drink when we checked in. Even though it's a smaller hotel they implemented many of the large chain hotel amenities. The pool and jacuzzi area is quiet and peaceful with plenty of shaded area to get out of the sun if needed. I would stay at Mason Beach Inn again if I come back to Santa Barbara.

+1
When one books through the Booking.com on check (after one can't cancel any more free of charge) one is given the worst room in the hotel. We were given a ground floor room between the lobby, parking lot, pool and the maids' laundry room. The hotel had absolutely no sound insulation so one heard conversations in the hall as if it were in one's own room. Doors slamming at 4 a.m. were as loud as if it were your room. One could hear every conversation in the halls, in the neighboring room and upstairs (and there were many) as if they were in your room,.The first day after check in the TV stopped working (the hotel fixed that) but all the electronic door locks stopped working and for the 4 days of our stay one had to wait to be let in accompanied from someone at the front desk. The toilet room had no functional ventilation and no window so the stinks stayed. The bathtub shower with the water saver shower head let out a thin stream while water still poured through the tub spigot. The opening in the spigot on the wash basin was placed at the very edge of the sink so that one had to hold one's hands in such a position that the counter always flooded. There was no writing instrument or pad in the room. The in-room coffee machine was Keurig and had undrinkable coffee ( we bought instant coffee and heated the water in the microwave (whose turntable was broken). The washcloths and bath mats were only sporadically replaced. The nightstand lamp was too weak to read in bed. The halls were shabby. The only good thing about this place was the proximity to the ocean. Way overpriced for what was basically a Motel 6.

This is not the first time we stayed at this place, and unfortunately, the overall experience has gone downhill when initially, ee really enjoyed the location and newer conditions of the premises compared to nearby places we tried.
There is a certain expectation that comes with getting a suite and paying a few thousand dollars for a hotel :
One less star for very late room cleaning (closer to 3pm every day at nap time), and no cleaning despite us politely requesting the room be cleaned early in the morning)
One less star for the floor being filthy (try to walk with white socks on the floor)
One less star for the lack of transparency and charges after we checked out (and a vague 'resort fee' answer when I called as they couldn't justify some of the amounts.
Very sad, this used to be our favorite place in Santa Barbara

We made a same-day booking through what was supposed to be a Mountain View king bed room here thru Trip Advisor’s portal to Booking.com. We were offered a special “mobile” price that was even lower than the price we’d seen earlier on Travelzoo.
When we arrived around 6:45pm, a woman we assumed was a guest sitting on a sofa in the small lobby looking at her phone. No one was at the reception desk. We looked around (including in the unlocked office area) and couldn’t find anyone. Finally, after several minutes, Ryan arrived and apologized then checked us in. However the rate he had us down for was $33 more per nt than the advertised rate. He said he couldn’t do anything because we’d booked through a third party.
My husband and I went out to the car to get my phone so I could show him the rate and on my phone and as we reentered lobby Ryan and the woman on sofa (Lisbeth) were talking about how guests don’t “get” the taxes portion of their bill. They stopped talking as soon as they saw us. The rate I’d been quoted was no longer available (in fact we’d booked the last room) and so I couldn’t prove the rate we thought we were getting. We were tired from driving all day and so resigned ourselves to paying the $33 extra, but asked if we could see the room first.
Our room was directly across from the hall from housekeeping HQ and their washers and dryers. Housekeeping carts lined the hallway in front of our room and the carpet outside our door had a HUGE water stain—probably from a washing machine overflowing(?). The room itself was okay but had a parking lot view—not a mountain in sight.
We went back to Ryan insisted on a refund from Booking.com (which he’d previously said he had no control over). He consulted Lisbeth who low and behold was not a guest but an employee who appeared to be the person in charge (even though she had said nothing to us when we entered the hotel to an empty reception desk). We were given a refund by a vey curt and unapologetic Lisbeth and left the premisses.
I also used the hotel lobby’s bathroom
while my husband checked us in and the trash can was overflowing with paper towels and the floor was filthy. The trash behind the reception desk was also quite full.

The hotel was a cute small place to stay, but a bit pricey for what you get.The covid situation meant that you would not get any services which would be ok if the bathroom did not have a seamless drain in the shower. It kept clogging and flooding. We had to use towels to dry things up as it over flowed. Trash was placed in the hallways in the mornings to be collected. I got cut on my hand by a broken glass in a trash bag left in the hall. This was just not worth $1600 for a week stay.

We had room 221 which may have been the only room not renovated as it looked nothing like the pictures on this site or the hotels website. Everything was askew, the lamp shades, tv’s and chairs. There was no coffee table in the living area which left us wondering where to set our drinks or other belongings down. They advertise internet however since this unit was in the back of the property the only hotspot we could get was from the hotel two doors away. Without the passcode we were dead in the water. There were two safety hazards where there were 4 items plugged into a skinny extension cords and the tv in the front area did not work. The place is surrounded by a parking lot which gives you nothing to look at but the surrounding buildings. The breakfast is a do-it-yourself cereal and coffee bar so don’t expect much. The seating area only holds 10 people so most folks just took a cup of coffee back to there room as as there was nowhere to sit. The staff was friendly and helpful as they took your money for this supposed 4 star hotel. If you just need a place to flop close to the harbor go for it. If you’re looking for a place to hang out all day and read and relax I’d pass.

This place could be so much more. It's in a great location, a short walk to the pier, close to lots of great restaurants and shopping...BUT, the customer service at the front desk and subsequently was subpar for a small boutique hotel. When we checked in the girl at the desk was typing on the computer and continued for a while. She finally made eye contact and proceeded to ask for a name. No greeting, just robotic in her exchange. She asked for the pin for the two rooms. I was confused. Long story short..it was for the Travelzoo coupon. I had spoken directly to the reservations people to book this and thought this was completed. Our room was comfortable but not very clean especially the bathroom floor.
On arriving home, I realized I had left a brand new denim jacket in the wardrobe closet. I called immediately to inquire. The agent answering the phone was disinterested in helping me and said he would check with the maids tomorrow and see if it showed up. He took my name and number and said he would call back. I called later and talked to another agent and he had no idea I had called but said nothing had shown up in lost and found. I was disappointed in the attitude of the service staff at this hotel. Not only did they not seem happy for our business but they seemed absolutely disinterested in making any type of impression what so ever. When I have travel dollars to spend, I will not choose this establishment again. I saw too many cute places nearby that looked inviting. If management is trying to market their Inn on Travelzoo for exposure, they may want to consider retraining their employees in hospitality. First and foremost, a simple hello, welcome to Mason Beach Inn would be a great way to start. Truly, how hard is that?
