Travelers' Choice
Belmond El Encanto, a Forbes Five-Star luxury hotel, has been meticulously restored to capture all the romance and glamour that endeared it to both the local Santa Barbara community and visitors alike. As part of Belmond, this is the company's first excursion to the American west coast. Ninety-two quintessential, California-styled suites and bungalows dot the lush, terraced grounds featuring seven-acres of gloriously landscaped gardens with sweeping views of Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean. Original architectural features have been lovingly restored, including the historic, trellis-lined Arbor and Lily Pond. Modern additions to the expansive outdoor zero-edge pool and a new beautifully appointed boutique spa enhance the journey for today's luxury-seeking guest.

We were very excited to stay at the Belmond, as we have stayed at another property and other luxury hotels around the world. Unfortunately, we were incredibly disappointed by the service. There seemed to be plenty of staff on site, just none actually doing their job. On the pros side, the property is gorgeous and well kept.

Lush grounds and luxurious accommodations meets anticipatory service. One of the best US hotel experiences I’ve had. Its easy to forget where you are once you arrive here. The warm and friendly staff go out of their way to make your stay memorable.

My room was on the small side, but I had patio that did have an ocean view, my ding is for the bathroom, as it was a shower/tub combo, so if an older person had my room it might have been difficult to maneuver into the shower, also I do agree with other reviews that the water pressure isn't great, in addition my closet was in the bathroom, after taking a steaming shower i felt my clothes were damp. Breakfast was very bland and nothing special, I did order pancakes, but pancakes at my local Bristol Farms were far more tasty. Dinner was much better. The grounds are very well manicured. Not sure why, when I called the room was $900, when my friend called it was $1,500 and we called within a day or two, not sure why the discrepancy in pricing as the hotel was not at capacity I was here for one night.

We have stayed at the Belmond property in London before and fell in love with Belmond and the standard of service they offered us there. This hotel is entirely different and did not feel like a Belmond property. We booked a single night using the AMEX fine hotels and resorts program. I had read prior reviews that some guests had their temperatures taken before they checked in...my wife and I did not. Front of house staff needed all of our information (name, address, email, etc) when we checked in as well as a signed waiver detailing whether or not we had COVID symptoms. Normally hotels have that on file when you book especially if you've been a patron of their hotel brand before. We were given a complimentary and basic room upgrade upon arrival per the AMEX guidelines and were pointed toward our room. When we found the room, our door was open and there was a cleaning crew in there. I used the phone in that room to let the management know they had made a mistake. They apologized and put us in the room adjacent within a few minutes. Room was ok - looks a bit outdated to be honest. The shower pressure was weak and the tub looked like an old beige tub in a 1980s home that needed to be renovated. Management sent up red wine, strawberries and champagne as an apology to us. This was wonderful of them to think of us and to make the room mistake right. Room service was ok - but radically overpriced ($75 for 2 coffees, one order of scrambled eggs and a single fruit plate with a single glass of orange juice). We had $60 free towards breakfast from AMEX, but wow...the pricing. The food was about average for a hotel of this price point. Rooms do not have a view since other structures are blocking each room. You've really got to pay a lot to get a room that isn't blocked by another structure. However, the gardening and the plants of the property are beautiful. There is constant yard work and carts clattering down the walkways during the day, so it's not super quiet, but the grounds are pristine. Lunch at the restaurant was a mixed bag. The tuna tartare is phenomenal. The mains are good, too but when I asked for ketchup and mustard for my burger they just didn't bring it at all. The bill for 4 of us with service included was $298 for a few cheeseburgers, a few salads, 3 appetizers and 3 cocktails. We laughed out loud at the bill. The view is ok, but nothing spectacular. Just a fun vibe. Overall, it just felt like an ok experience but not a 5 star luxury situation. Room, valet and meals included we were in for about $1000 for the single night. The hotel is beautiful but the entire experience just lacked soul. We might try again when COVID is a thing of the past, but we will try elsewhere in town next time we come to SB.

We stayed in Santa Barbara for one night during COVID. We liked that they took temperatures of arriving guests and masking was adhered to. The fact that the room all (I believe) have private outdoor entrances is great -- no need for elevators or other shared indoor space. Nice, clean, comfortable room, though no real views to be had (need to visit the dining room for that, which we did not do as we preferred to experience the town.) Valet service was prompt and courteous.
