Rancho Oso provides a family friendly place for families to camp. Near the tent sites, you will find bathrooms with warm showers available, and on hot days, you are only a short walk to the swimming pool. Our toddler was too cold for the swimming pool, but the playground offered a good time of play for her, and she was perfectly happy collecting rocks all around our campsite. The only issue we had, was the trash area. The tent site only had one dumpster available for all the campers, and while this is conveniently located to us all, it is not good when trash is overflowing, and crows are having a world of fun in the trash. I think the crows know that sharing is caring, because they most certainly shared their trash all around the campsite. Almost as if brining us back our trash. Not ideal when you have curious toddlers, but certainly an issue that can be resolved by adding more dumpsters to the site. Of course, every encounter we had with the staff was pleasant, you can tell, they like being there, and they are very helpful.

One week stay in our trailer as a family with two kids

The Good: majority of staff very friendly. The weekend staffers seemed a lot more friendly than the beginning of the week. Horseback trail riding was great if you got a morning spot, which we did. Tory was one of our guides and a lot of fun. Lisa was very nice, also. We did a morning ride so we did not have them cancel due to heat. RV sites were fine. Nothing spectacular. All of our neighbors throughout the week were awesome! Met some great families. Park was pretty quiet. Either everyone hid in their RVs with AC or they were all at the pool. Kids were able to take our card and get equipment (pickle ball, putters, etc) without having to drag us lazy adults up and down the hills. Pretty relaxing for us, actually!

The bad: Pool not monitored. Adults with glass alcohol containers and loose dogs in and out of the pool while owners laughed and encouraged it. Considering one of my children was attacked by a dog a couple years ago, seeing a Rottweiler charging at him constantly was not ideal. The water was supposed to be shut off for the day due to a leak from 930-330. We planned our day around it, driving into Santa Barbara only to return to find out that the workers didn’t bring the right equipment or enough manpower so they would shut it off again the next day. Stuff happens but it was hot and no water kinda sucked. Propane ran out for hot tub. It was just a third pool for unsupervised kids to pee in. Bathrooms were probably the worst of all the TTs we’ve been to. Not once did I ever go in to not see a pile of someone else’s crap in the toilet and mounds of toilet paper on the floor.

The Ugly: unleashed animals! Seriously! I have never seen so many unleashed pets! Every day I was shooing away a dog named Eddie that continued to poop in our campsite and tried to pounce our pets. There were also two cats that belonged to the same people that were constantly in our campsite trying to attack the wildlife and our own pets. When I brought it up to a worker, I was told, “Its useless to complain as the owner is the daughter of one of our staff so nothing will be done about it. She’s allowed to do whatever.” Wow. It was also hard explaining to my kids why they couldn’t ride their scooters (The rules state no scooters) while her kids were allowed to..... while leaving their scooter behind our truck in our campsite overnight.

I’d love to visit during the spring or fall when it wasn’t so hot or crowded. I’m sure it’s beautiful!

The location is perfect to getaway from the city. Our family stayed in a cabin which was nice and cozy. The place was has stove, refrigerator, dishes, pots, & pans to use. A grill and picnic table outside the cabin.Their country store & restaurant is closed due to Covid and there aren't any other stores or restaurants nearby. The closest place is approx 30 mins to Santa Barbara & Solvang. I enjoyed getting away.

Disappointed. We go on many family trips & we were Disappointed here. The horseback riding was the best part. But just know that the only WiFi available is by an activity center(which us closed)so you sit outside in the cold to get WiFi. I had to reach my 18 year old who was at home a few times and this was a pain. Also they require you to clean the cabin rooms, bathroom with 409 and sweep your cabin before you leave or pay $150 fee. This was on top of what we already paid. Also the pull out bed you could feel the springs really bad on your body, super old.

This site is fantastic overall. Clean sites, update electrical/water, clean bathrooms/toilets, and closed trash bins. The optional horseback riding is great for kids of all ages. Trail rides for kids 8 and above and lead horseback riding for kids 8 and below. The resident 300 pounds Hampshire pig Gordon was cute. Overall, if you're looking for a place to get away (btw - no wifi or cell reception, we have Verizon wireless, except at the Lodge - wifi did work and checked email and made calls), this is the place to go. Large RVs will be hard to get into and out of this site. Electrical is 30 amp. You'll need either a 50 amp converter for large RVs or a 30 amp converter for tent camping using everyday kitchen appliances like kettle, electrical burner, etc.

' place was full and I ended up in the area by tents. I found sites to be adequate. On the way to location I passed several
Primitive campgrounds that were empty and wished I had saved my $70 and stayed there.

We really loved this campground. Deep in the beautiful mountains and surrounded by incredible oak trees, it was a magical place. There was even a colony of acorn woodpeckers, turkeys, and deer.

The grounds were pretty well maintained, minus some pretty big ruts in the road and a little bit older attire. However, it was pretty cool with a kitschy feel.

The staff and management went out of their way to be accommodating, even calling us as we were traveling there to let us know of road maintenance that might have been blocking one of the main roads.

One item that was not very good was that they advertised that they had wifi. They do not. Their transmitter was almost useless and unless you had verizon or at&t and sat right next to the wifi transmitter, you did not get an adequate signal. Instead, you would have to sit in your car at the top of the hill, 15 minutes away, to get a signal. However, if you are just looking to get away, it is perfect!

I definitely would like to visit again soon.

It's a beautiful location but there isn't much to do. Horseback riding is $50 for an hour. All sites are first come first serve, so you can't be near friends or family. The one way road in is a little scary. They could easily implement a policy of not driving up between certain hours, or even a gate if someone is headed down. One day there is going to be a bad accident. We are lucky we didn't have to back our RV up. No campfires, no petting zoo, no mini golf open. Lots of full timers scattered throughout the park. Why not put the full timers all in one area? My friend that rented a cabin was asked to sweep and clean the counters, etc. Does that mean there is no maid service? That's just odd.

The cabin that is sold to you as the larger cabin that sleeps 6 is absolutely NOT LARGER! Save your money and book the cheaper cabin. They are nicer, 2 story and in my opinion sleep more kids comfortably.

If you have more than 2 kids, book the smaller cabin and bring extra sleeping cushions for your extra kids. The loft in the cabin can probably accommodate 4 kids.

Also, skip bringing tennis rackets. It is pickle ball only there.

We too had to leave the next day. I was not able to work remotely.

Wifi at the lodge was hit and miss and there is NO CELL Service at the lodge, thus I was not able to authenticate via my phone (job requires a cell phone authentication)
Seems like a popular spot for the locals, Pools were very crowded.
Lodge has pool table and comfortable spaces to hang out.
Lots of uphill walking since most sites are located on hill side

You can rent horses for $50 but only twice a morning 9:30 and 11

Thousand trails should invest in reliable WIFI if they plan to get new people like us to rejoin next year.
