First the positive: great location, dog friendly (although no water bowls anywhere in sight) ... and that's it! If you're transitioning to a forthcoming prison sentence, then this place is right up your alley. According to the receptionist, ALL the rooms are the same 160 sq. ft. and the 'Riviera Beach House' (ironically named to give them the benefit of doubt) was formerly a hostel (as far as I'm concerned it still is - only 5X more expensive). A double bed consumes about 85% of the floor space, thus with luggage on the floor it's impossible to even walk around the bed. Our room was also essentially windowless (frosted, opaque panes) that only exacerbated the claustrophobia . The minuscule bathroom has a corner quasi-shower and the bathroom floor is the only surface large enough to place the coffeemaker. No tub of course, that would take up more than half the bathroom. And no elevator - be prepared to schlep your luggage up a long steep staircase. The fact that this hotel is rated 4-stars leads me to question the validity of TripAdvisor. Seriously, are all the reviewers masochists and/or paid shills? If they're a legit reviewing platform, Trip Advisor needs to investigate

I have stayed at this hotel when it was previously known as the Hotel Indigo. The “funk zone” was still a little funky in a still sketchy part of town. Lower State Street has cleaned up very nicely with a lot of brand new places to go to. The Riviera Beach House also has cleaned up and not only provides a good value, but the location is hard to beat. You are in n the Funk Zone and a two block walk to the Pier and beaches. They have a terrific Mexican restaurant and bar on site. Finally, the services was excellent, especially Thomas the fro t desk clerk who went out of his way to give recommendations on nearby restaurants and really helping with a fast checkout! Well done Thomas! As I stated: Great Hotel, Great Value, Great Location and Great Service! Jim P.

Love this hotel! Close to everything, and exceptional onsite dining. Loved taking the complimentary bikes into town for some shopping. Thomas took great care of us during our stay. Will absolutely be back soon!

35 years ago we were married at the Santa Barbara courthouse and the Riviera Beach House was the perfect location for our return! Thomas at the front desk made all the difference. Last night when the restaurant next door had a 2 hour wait, he took our order and had them serve us our dinner and drinks, without delay, right outside the hotel! Very romantic!

The good: Hotel staff were AMAZING. The restaurant on the property is world class. The room itself (while tiny - but they are pretty honest about that) was great - comfy bed, really cool decor, the bathroom made the most of a small space, and the little patio was delightfull. The Bad - This hotel is literally noisier than an airport hotel. My patio backed up to a fairly busy street where every one parked so I heard every squeal, child's scream, quiet conversation - in my room, not just the patio because the sidewalk literally butted up to my patio . The maint. staff has a little work shop that my patio shared a wall with and I heard their radio, their conversations, their grinders, when ever they opened or shut the door to it (not the maint. staff's fault at all, they shouldn't have to walk around whispering in their work shop so maybe choose a different location?). There is an events center right next door and I heard every song, every beat, every "twist and shout" from my room untill 2:00 in the morning every night I was there. During the day, I guess there were repairs being made in the room next to mine because it sounded like someone was grinding on the wall or throwing bricks at it for HOURS for two of the three days I was there. The train station that is pretty close by was literally the quietest thing that I experienced and they blew their whistle every time they crossed State Street right out in front. For the price (I'm from out of state but kind of familiar with California Sticker shock) this is not a good choice, especially if you need some rest and relaxation. I did have a few hours of quiet, but only a few. This hotel has so much to offer............except for peace and quiet. Again, fantastic staff, amazing food, very clean and comfy but I've stayed in hotels by airports that were much, much quieter.

Great location and facilities. The funk zone is a lovely part of Santa Barbara - loads of cute restaurants, cafes and bars, and right on the waterfront. We loved using the complementary bikes from the hotel to cycle along the promenade in the morning.

My boyfriend and I just stayed here last weekend and had the best experience. We both used to live in Santa Barbara and we always choose this hotel when we visit because it’s small, easy, clean, trendy, and you can walk to almost everything!!!! It’s so convenient to be able to walk to the funk zone, shopping on state street, the beach, the farmers market, etc. I want to shout out DAVID who made our stay so great. David was extremely friendly and accommodating, gave us recommendations, and really made us so excited to be in good hands during our stay. Very impressed with him! Thanks for everything, we will be back hopefully soon!

Mixed thoughts on this place. Staff was terrific. Location is great - right on State Street near numerous shops and restaurants, and a quick walk to the beach. Unfortunately that means it is also pretty noisy at night. Aside from street noise there is also a train track that runs through town right near the hotel which lets off an ear piercing whistle when it goes by (including late night and early morning). Also, while the rooms are clean and modern they are TINY, and I do mean tiny - as in, the bed takes up the entire room and there is barely enough space to open your suitcase (I resorted to putting it on my bed to open it), no proper closet, limited amenities. If you are looking for a quick overnight stay and don’t plan to spend time in the room (and don’t mind the noise), this is an ok option. But at the price point this location gets (relatively expensive) it doesn’t offer much.

Hotel Indigo is a quaint boutique hotel with both modern and traditional Santa Barbara touches. Its location couldn’t be more convenient, just a half block south of the train station on State Street. It’s a short walk to the beach in one direction and downtown in the other. From the moment I stepped into the fresh, bright, modern lobby I was greeted with warm smiles. There couldn’t have been a more welcoming introduction to my stay here. The staff was consistently available, professional, and friendly, ready with a sincere greeting every time I came and went. COVID precautions are taken seriously here and it was clear a lot of thought went into guest safety and comfort. My room was on the first floor with a private patio. The room makes the most of its small size with a clean, simple, minimalistic layout. Bright white walls expand the space while beautiful wood grain flooring and exposed brick on the patio side give it a historic feel befitting its location. The TV and air conditioning unit, both wall mounted, help keep the limited space open and uncluttered. The single closet/dresser/coffeemaker unit (a Keurig!) does likewise. Still, there was plenty of workspace with a large glass-topped desk and numerous outlets. A white noise generator was a pleasant surprise although the hotel was very quiet during my stay and it wasn’t really needed. The occasional train was not a bother. The European style bathroom is quite small as expected. The adjustable handheld shower is a delight. The highlight was the patio, large and well appointed with a wicker table and two cushioned chairs, surrounded by greenery and dark woods. What a delightful setting it was for coffee in the morning and late night snacks. I look forward to returning here in a few months. This property is truly a gem.
