Really loved our stay here at the Upham. The room was beautifully decorated and the bed very comfortable indeed. We were greeted by Sahara at the front desk and made to feel welcome. The property has gardens in the middle courtyard area and it feels very tranquil for a downtown setting. A special shout-out to the maintenance people for keeping the rooms looking pristine, even down to the paint and windows looking great for each new guest. It’s that attention to detail which makes this hotel stand out from others.

We have stayed at the Upham before, but I was particularly impressed with their pandemic modifications. In lieu of the wine and cheese afternoon, they offer a bottle of local wine for each room. In lieu of the breakfast buffet there is a basket of scones, cookies, oatmeal and coffee in the room. It was a lovely weekend getaway after a year of isolation!

We rented the Sycamore Suite, which consisted of a 1-bedroom 1-bath attached cottage with a huge and private landscaped patio. Pros: The suite had tons of charm and the patio was beautiful and huge. The bathroom was spacious with a deep soaking tub which I used every day. The bed was comfy and the suite had a lovely gas log fireplace. Because of Covid there was no daily housekeeping, but the small and gracious staff responded immediately to any questions or requests. Other guests were universally friendly and I think staying at the Upham automatically puts one in a good mood. The hotel is old, but well-maintained. Floors are a bit uneven (who cares?) but the space was well-cleaned. I would have appreciated an electric kettle (I went and bought one, and when my husband turned the coffee pot on at the same time we blew a fuse. Oops. The staff immediately fixed the problem and we were on our way. We had two lovely dinners at the hotel's bistro, Louies. They were two of the best meals we had in Santa Barbara. The restaurant had just opened after being closed for Covid. The wait staff was impeccable. We would highly recommend the hotel and the restaurant.

Yes, we chose to stay at the Upham Hotel due to many reasons. Mainly we wanted a central location that we could not only walk to places, but also enjoy having a resort feeling at the hotel. The website states that there would be breakfast included, but instead we got one dry scone and a cookie per person in a box. We understand about “COVID” but a nice place could also offer much better. We booked knowing there was a restaurant on site and saw that it was on a front porch. Again it was closed totally due to COVID. With all the outdoor areas of the hotel, this would had given that reset feeling while there. Note the website promotes the “open hours” of the restaurant. And lastly there was a wine tasting that was eliminated. There are wine tastings throughout the area and yet promoted on the website, it was closed. Of course they did compensate with a bottle of local wine. We could had stayed in the area cheaper but really chose this accommodation for its amenities. Of course after driving for hours, it was sad we found out these amenities were not available. Should have just booked a room elsewhere for less that offered what we received here.

I love this hotel and stay here every time I am in Santa Barbara. The staff are always kind and helpful and the grounds are beautiful. I highly recommend the Upham. I have stayed in many different rooms and they are all pleasant. It's always quiet and being able to park close to your room is a plus. The hotel is within walking distance to State Street with all its shops and restaurants. Looking forward to my next visit.
