We stayed one night and were impressed with the location and service (Ramon at check in/out was awesome). We enjoyed sipping lemonade in the gorgeous gardens. Next time we will splurge a bit, and stay in one of the cottages or carriage houses. Highly recommend this property and plan to visit again ourselves.
Been to the Upham many times, and had a good experience. This time was better than the rest and during the pandemic, you wouldn't think so. They upgraded some rooms, the garden is perfect to social distance, yet enjoy the hotel. Instead of breakfast and wine hour, they give you a welcome basket, with scones, cookies and a bottle of wine. The service was great, Matt at the desk was extremely, friendly and helpful!
Loved this place! Hospitality has been its vibe for all the decades of its existence. Wine and cheese in the afternoon is a great way to relax after travel and have a pleasant conversation with other guests. The landscaping is beautiful, the property is a tribute to its historic past. There is a superb onsite restaurant. Slept well in the comfortable king size bed.
I spent one night at the The Upham, which I chose after careful research between a lot of hotels in Santa Barbara. I was expecting an upscale hotel with beautiful rooms and hoping to spend a wonderful night there. The hotel is very nice, beautiful reception and gardens. Unfortunately they gave us a small room at the Lincoln building and the AC was not working. Besides, there was no switch for the two lights on top of the sink and the wood doors below the sink were really old. Staff tried to help us with the AC and took us to six different rooms, all smelling of mold. At the end we decided to stay in our room and I woke up at 4:30 and couldn't get back to sleep because the room was so warm. Definitely, not the experience I was looking for. Breakfast was lousy with few options.
Before arriving at the Upham, I had a very unique experience as I was planning a birthday party for my mom's 60th and was originally booked at another property. That property ended up cancelling on me 3 weeks out from the big weekend I had planned (after I had already paid in full, because another party that was bigger took all the rooms-- supposedly), but it ended up being a blessing in disguise and I can't thank the incompetence of that property enough for blessing me with the opportunity to stay at the Upham. The general manager of the hotel, Denise, is a godsend! From the moment we booked at this new property to the moment we left, Denise went above and beyond to ensure we had a good weekend. Besides blessing us with her amazing hospitality, she gave us restaurant recommendations, and was always there if we needed anything. She is honestly amazing, and it is so rare to find someone like that these days that truly puts the needs and wants of her guests first. In addition to Denise and her friendly staff, the property itself is absolutely beautiful and in the perfect location, just a block away from State Street. Our stay at the Upham really put the cherry on top of an unforgettable weekend, and I can't wait for the opportunity to go back and stay there again. They definitely have gained a guest for life! Thank you Denise and the Upham for everything!…
