Getting there
Somewhat walkable
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travelers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
Carpeting and furniture are worn, but room was very clean.
There's a small outdoor seating area near the lobby, if you want to hang out with coffee and people-watch.
As of September 2021, they're offering a limited continental breakfast (coffee and danish).
Like many hotels, they face a staffing shortage. Front lobby was not manned the morning I checked out. So if you have late evening / early morning logistics needs (luggage storage, printing) I recommend checking the evening before.
Hotel is within easy walking distance of a cafe and brew pub. Downtown SLO is a moderate walk (about 15 minutes).
If you're there on a Thursday night, the downtown farmers market has a huge variety of produce and food stands.

It was graduation weekend and we needed a place to stay close to our sons house, and all hotels were way over priced! I picked Lamplighter for it’s proximity to my son. We had a family suite. The walls are like paper, you hear everything outside, above or below you, it’s ridiculous. We were pooped from a very full day and tried to go to bed around 9:30, as soon as I turned off the light i heard people screaming and yelling and something hitting cars in the parking lot. Looked out the window and it was grown men playing wiffle ball in the parking lot. I waited a half hour and then called the front desk (had to use my cell as the phone in the room apparently is just for looks). I asked the young man that answered the phone if he could send someone to ask the men to stop as I did not want to interact, and he said “be patient everyone is just trying to have some fun “. Idk if he ever talked to them, as 5 minutes later they hit a car and the alarm went off, then they scattered. Also, they put 2 separate holds on my card each for the full amount of my stay, and the duplicate did not release for 4 days. My room for grad weekend was $500+ per night, and it was a pit. If I had anywhere else to stay I would have hightailed it out of there. Bedding is stained, couch looked like it has seen way too much, and bathroom was moldy. Never will I ever even look at a lamplighter inn again!

Since most of the places were really expensive, and we were just looking for a quick sleep, we stayed in this motel. We had read really bad reviews and probably was not that bad, although there were some things the place should improve. First of all, we were given a room that, to our surprise, was open when we got to the door and the room had not been cleaned, the bed was unmade, there were food bags around... We were given another room and this one was better. It was late, and we did not want to ask for anything else but the door lock was not working -we were so tired we did not care enough and went to sleep. Also, the night we arrived, it took quite a long time for the staff of the lobby to come and receive us. In fact, there was a guest before us, who ended up calling the reception so someone could come and attend the guests, there was a queue already (this was 9-10 p.m.).

I got a good deal at the Lamplighter Inn & Suites as a place to spend a couple nights while taking my son back to his university after the holidays. The price was reasonable, the location seemed well suited for walking to downtown San Luis Obispo, and the staff member who checked me in could not have been more pleasant.
Unfortunately, part of my stay involved actually going into the room. It was terribly run down and very dirty. The light operated by the switch near the door kept going out unless I jiggled the switch. There was filth everywhere. The door didn't fully shut unless you deliberately pulled it closed (which is dangerous for personal as well as property reasons). And the shower was literally held together with duct tape! Here is an abbreviated list of what I was treated to in my room:
o A door that looked like it had been kicked in by a SWAT team o Foreign debris on the sheets and pillow case, which prompted me to spend two nights sleeping on top of the covers o Loads of grime and debris along the baseboards, particularly behind the nightstands o Soap scum on the sink that should have been cleaned off o Filth dripping down the wall in the bathroom that would literally take five seconds to wipe away, which was here when I checked in so it wasn't from me o Mold on the shower caulking o The aforementioned duct tape, sealing the shower assembly to the moldy tile below
I know this is hard to believe, so photos are attached. Thankfully I only had to spend two nights, or I would've checked out early and gone to any one of the half a dozen decent looking hotels within a stone's throw. I see that this motel used to be a Comfort Inn. I'm curious whether the franchise dropped them for this kind of stuff.
Do yourself a favor and don't be lured in by the low room rate. It's low for a reason; just not low enough.

This is the motel from hell. I also read the reviews and found them mixed. When we checked in we went through three rooms trying to put together a package that had a working TV, a coffee pot and towels, moving stuff from one room to another. It was explained that there is one cleaner for the entire motel and it shows. We were gone the next day and when we returned the room had not been touched. We had to go to the desk and once again ask for coffee and towels and toilet paper. In a four day stay the room was sort of cleaned once. Usually when we returned the key no longer worked in the lock and had to be reprogrammed and even after it was it was difficult to enter because it was jammed and required slamming it with your shoulder to open. The so called breakfast consists of coffee and a few plastic wrapped Danishes and muffins. The desk clerks were pleasant and tried to help but it’s a lost cause. I don’t think either is there anymore.

I stayed in a queen bed room and was given the corner room on the 2nd floor which was perfect! The room has safe deposit box, microwave, fridge & toiletries. The bed is nice too, not too soft as if you sink into the bed. They also have hot tub and pool open although I didn't use them. There is parking available onsite and walking to downtown takes around 15 minutes. There are also places to eat nearby if you don't want to walk to downtown. Overall, very comfortable stay!

I was so sleep deprived when i wrote my review earlier, I forgot to mention the number one problem with this hotel:
It is over run by hoodlums, who all seem to be chummy with Vanessa, the receptionist. There was thundering pounding above the room I was trying to sleep in, like a herd of elephants running back and forth. There was no one answering phones, and no one in the lobby. So I got dressed and went upstairs and talked to all the partiers, who all said "it's not us". But it suddenly got quiet about 1:00 a.m.
The place is filthy. Really sad, because it looked like it used to be a nice hotel. To quote another traveled who recently reviewed Lamplighter SLO, "to avoid at any cost." You likely will get little to no sleep, and the receptionist is abusively rude. Zero accountability. Manager nowhere to be found. Place needs to be shut down. Contact health division, City of San Luis Obispo, county authorities.
Shame on Hotwire for putting travelers in harm's way here.

Even tho they show nice image if bacon and eegs, the reality is only very small NOT fresh individual little danishes available. Rooms are dirty and not updated, toilet running all nigh, carpet stained all over, Bathroom doors are cracked with holes. We booked the place for our club team, so the players can eat breakfast together in 1 place. Manager stated sorry we asked long time ago to update our images on the website, but nothing happened. Just checked same old images still there, nothing changed. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLANCE !!

I’ve stayed at the Lamplighter many times over the years. It’s been acceptable in the higher-priced SLO market. This past weekend, the first room they gave us had mold in the bathroom and broken furniture. The second room had a broken refrigerator. They balked at giving us a third. They left the front desk unstaffed at the dinner hour! We did get a refund and found a much better tho slightly more expensive room across the street at the University. Understand it’s under new management. Too bad. We’ll never stay there again.

The first room they gave us, the a/c didn't work and the room smelled as bad as any room I had ever walked into. So I complained and they gave me a second room - the a/c worked and it didn't smell, but the place was dirty - there were old french fires on the balcony and a few were stuck in the a/c fan blower. Do yourself a favor and no matter what the price or problems, find another place.

Front desk told me manager does not care about reviews or customer experience because they stay busy. Maybe if enough people post they'll start appreciating the guests that pay their bills.
