Detailed Reviews
A late review.
We highly recommend coming here for a little getaway. Especially when you cant travel during the pandemic.
We stayed in Joseph's jungle / the lion room.
It was a quiet couple retreat with a king bed and an outdoor "cereal bowl" looking bathtub which was perfect for stargazing. Just a head up, dont expect hot water in the bathtub.
It did get a little chilly at night even in September but there were heated elements built in to the bed. The bathroom was clean and well heated.
Your stay does include admission to the zoo, it is small but well run. The animal enclosures were clean and the animals appeared well-fed.
Guests breakfast are delivered each morning , including juice, pastry and fruits.
You also get to feed the elephants in the morning, which was a highlight of our trip!
Please arrive before 3pm, as they do bring zoo animals to visit the guests around that time. We were visited by an adorable little lynx during our stay!
Regarding covid19 measures, the staff wore masks and do keep their distance. Hand sanitizers were readily available. Guests must wear masks at all time inside zoo premise per the signs.
However, we did spot guests without one as soon as they are out of sight from zoo staff.

We had been wanting to visit for a long time and finally my husband on a whim checked to see if there was availability for this weekend and it ended up being their first weekend reopening since the Covid closures! I can’t say enough about the tent cabins, based on the photos I was a little nervous that our cat bungalow would look a little bit like tiger king but it was beautiful, so clean, so organized and so spacious. We never saw a bug, the mosquito net above the bed must be for ambience! We did feed the elephants in the morning and then we had added on a package to wash the elephants feed them and have our photos taken with them, a lot of fun for our young teenage daughter.
The only slightly negative thing I would say is that in the morning when you go to feed the elephants as part of your stay, the individuals bringing the elephants to you are not terribly warm, you sort of had to pry information out of them regarding the elephants. With the tour it was completely different, the tour guide Sydney who is also a trainer along with the other trainers were awesome, very informative and a lot of fun to be with.
Loved the Zoo as well.

This was a fantastic experience! I stayed at the Monkey Manor and couldn't believe how clean it was. The beds are extremely comfortable, heated mattress pad and white bedding. We were close enough to hear the tigers roar, this was really exciting! The shower was hot and the heater worked so well we actually had to turn it down during the night. The view from the deck was amazing and relaxing. The bungalows are spread out so you can really enjoy the view and privacy. We brought in our dinner so that we could enjoy every minute at this place. The zoo is the cleanest zoo that I've ever been to and the animals seem extremely happy. I recommend paying the extra money for Crunch Time, you get the feed the tigers! I have already booked a second trip with my parents for two bungalows. I highly recommend this place, relaxing glamping by the zoo.

We loved this place! The bungalow was awesome and well equipped. Surprisingly we stayed warm with the space heater and heated mattress pads. Incredible to hear the lions at night and look across at the zebras and water buffalo from our deck. On our arrival day, the staff walked a few animals by the bungalows and spent a few minutes talking to us about them. We did a private tour and it was so enjoyable with the staff being friendly and engaging and the zoo was immaculate! Breakfast was a generous box filled with various pastries, fruit, and yogurt. I was very impressed! We enjoyed our stay so much and highly recommend Vision Quest!

My family spent the night this past weekend at Vision Quest Ranch and visited the Zoo on Saturday. It was a great experience, and my children really enjoyed the Zoo and staying overnight at the Bungalow.
We arrived on Saturday and toured the Zoo. It was pleasantly not crowded, and so we were able to spend time at the exhibits without feeling rushed to move on. Yes, some of the animals seem a bit crowded, but the Zoo is very clean, as are the exhibits. 90% of the animals were out and easily viewed which may the experience more enjoyable. I find it frustrating when attending zoos, and the animals are either inside, or hidden away behind obstacles.
We were able to check into our Tent Bungalow in the early afternoon which was nice. No waiting until 4pm... Our Bungalow (which was the Big Cats one closest to of course the Big Cats) was spacious and enough room for 4. It was clean and with a large bathroom. A refrig with water and orange was a nice touch. You can definitely hear the Male Lions throughout the early night and early in the morning, so be aware. We did not mind, and it literally felt as if the Lions were right outside our place. The Bungalow also has a view of a large exhibit that currently has Rhinos, Zebras, Water Buffalo, and Wildebeast.
In the late afternoon we choose the duo activity of feeding the Tigers and then putting the Rhino's to bed. This was the highlight of the trip, and well worth the extra expense. Being that close to the animals was very exciting for the kids and us. Also before this activity, we did have animals taken to the front of our bungalow which included a Lemur and Skunk.
There is a small breakfast provided the next day which was nice. Overall the staff were friendly and engaging, and for us, well worth the experience. A definite hidden gem located in the western foothills of Salinas.

Vision Quest Ranch is a slice of Africa! It’s a unique and memorable experience. The atmosphere is serene, the surroundings are stunning, and the connection to nature is unparalleled.
The highlight of my visit was booking a personalized tour at the zoo, which I highly recommend to anyone planning a trip here. It’s the best way to learn more about the incredible animals that call this place home. The guides are knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about wildlife, which made the experience all the more engaging.
If you’re looking for a unique experience that’s both fun and educational, it’s worth every penny and more!

Super comfortable glamping experience. Turn the heater on before it gets super cold and you'll be fine. We did the zoo the day we arrived. In the afternoon, they walk one or two animals over to visit you. We got to see a baby black leopard and my daughter was over the moon. Our breakfast meet and greet was with a camel. The beds were comfortable and the breakfast was big and delicious. You could definitely hear the big cats super well from Monkey Manor (tent #2).

My husband and I just spent our anniversary at VQR. While I agree with a lot of the reviews on here about the cool tents and elephants bringing the breakfast and views from the decks, but there are quite a few negative things about this place that need to be shared.
We read about Vision Quest Ranch in our local newspaper (Sacramento). We were under the impression that this was a rescue organization and that this ranch was a sanctuary for retired film and circus animals.
We arrived at 1pm for our tour of the property. They had us wait outside the gift shop (which is good because it STUNK in there!). There were only two benches for people to sit on, and one of the VQR staff members was taking her lunch there and spread her stuff all over it, leaving only one bench for other people to sit on. People were sitting on the ground! I couldn't believe that she wouldn't take her lunch elsewhere or at least offer to sit on the ground so that guests could sit down!
Next we started our tour. We quickly learned that this was not a rescue organization. Many of the animals were purchased from breeders! Also, they are training a lot of these animals FOR movies and films. They have a brown bear there that they declawed because "it's not safe FOR THE BEAR to have them while he's being trained." What? The cages that the animals were in were appalling small. They weren't the least bit natural either. All concrete and chainlink fencing with plastic dog igloos for shelter. The lion for example was in a 15 foot x 15 foot cage. Somebody on our tour asked about the small cages and we were told that they were the animal's "bedrooms" and that they "tried" to take them on walks "fairly often". Many of the animals were solitary, as in no companions in their cages with them. It was quite sad. We felt very bad for the animals. In one cage, the water pool was empty. We were told that it was broken and leaking and that they'd put more water in it as soon as the tour was over. It was a VERY hot day and the poor animals in that cage were standing in the pool, looking for water!
Our tour group probably had about 25 people in it, which given the teeny, tiny cages, meant that you often couldn't see the animal over the heads of other people. If you tried to linger a second longer to snap a photo, since you could finally see the animal after the group moved away, the tour guide would yell at you.
Your tour ends at 2pm and they don't let you check in until 3pm. Kinda a silly set-up because you end up with an hour to linger around the smelly gift shop or leave the property and come back in an hour since they STRONGLY recommend that you check in at 3pm. After we checked in, they brought a couple animals by the lodges so we could see them. They first brought a baboon (Babs) who wasn't quite behaving. The trainer was in a grouchy, pissed off mood and kept grabbing Babs by her ears and yelling in her face. At one point in time, she took off her hat and hit Babs repeatedly in the head! It was incredibly awkward and uncomfortable watching the trainer scream at the poor animal repeatedly. Babs was also wearing a giant rusty chain around her waist, which was a bit disconcerting to see. You think that they could put on a canvas harness like what you use with dogs.
The last negative which wasn't mentioned in the newspaper article, is that the ranch also boards dogs. They had probably 30+ dogs boarding there this past weekend. Imagine the racket! We woke up Saturday early morning to the sound of a lion's roar and then a couple trumpeting elephants...very cool. But about 10 minutes later, the dogs started going nuts! They barked and howled and barked. It was awful. There was no more sleeping after that. After we had breakfast, we had thoughts about reading on our deck or going back to sleep, but the dogs drove us away. It was really quite sad. Here you have this beautiful view of elephants and water buffalo and such from your porch, serenaded by the sounds of barking/howling dogs!
So, this place is not necessarily for animal lovers. Besides the elephants, the other animals seem to have quite a sad little life there in their teeny/tiny cages, solitary confinement, grouchy trainers, missing claws, and noisy, howling dog neighbors!

Response from MyHumbleOpinionMtry, Owner at Vision Quest Ranch
Responded Jul 21, 2012
There are those who have an aversion to animals in captivity on all levels, we simply disagree. We respect those opinions but regret that they use such a forum to attack the efforts of others who are doing the best they can with what they have to work with. We would also like to see our animals in larger more natural style enclosures which is why we are under construction to day to accomplish that goal. But we don’t feel we misrepresent our current facility for our website very clearly depicts and describes our facility for all to see prior to making their decision to stay here and participate in our programs. Many of the animals described in this review arrived at our facility in the condition this client found so unsettling. If we refused a home to all that might solicit such a review, many animals would go without sanctuary or be euthanized instead. It is unfortunate that this client did not notice the construction near the B&B that is underway that will one day offer all our animals much larger natural style enclosures. This is a slow and difficult project due to the economic climate but never the less, the only way we can make such a dream come true. We are not certain what “smell” she was referring to for we have never heard such a complaint about our gift shop but we do not feel the need to defend that we are an “animal facility” and smells can happen with little notice. We take great pride in almost every trip advisor review scoring our cleanliness at the highest degree, even this one... Once again, we do not limit our home to animals that might not offend our sense of smell. Our staff has an employee area in which to eat lunch and we have never once seen one of them eating lunch on the benches outside our lobby but we do see guests doing so almost daily so we suspect this is unfortunately what occurred on this day. We will explore ideas to minimize such occurrences in the future. None of our lions (or tigers) are in 15ft. x 15ft. caging, that would be a clear violation of Calif. Dept. of F&G state law. Each has a min. of 300sq.ft. per Calif. F&G Code Title 671 specifications, and several have a total of 600sq.ft. until such a time their ½ to ¼ acre paddocks are completed. We no not how to respond to the “declawed bear” comment since none of our bears are in fact declawed. Lastly, we do our best to retire the dogs boarding in our pet boarding facility inside our kennel building at an hour that affords our guests as quiet an experience as possible while still being fair to the dogs. The pet boarding facility is imperative to the financial support of the entire ranch therefore there is little we can do remedy this. Again, we try to make this business and its location as transparent as possible to all with maps and photos on our website and we will continue to explore any avenues possible to address this issue. We appreciate the few areas that this client did appreciate the atmosphere we’ve created for our elephants and animals in that enclosure and look forward to the rest of our animals receiving similar atmospheres as our hopes and dreams materialize.

I was planning a last-minute short weekend away and found this place on a lark -- I'm so glad I did! The B&B is on the grounds of what's basically a wild animal "zoo" (the owners might flinch at this word, but that's really what it felt like). The animals there are actors in Hollywood for commercials and movies, so they live here during their "off-time" -- away from the rigours of Hollywood! Take the tour of the ranch which is included in the price of your stay and you'll get to see lions and tigers and bears -- no lie!
The four "cabins" at the B&B overlook the elephants' area. They are actually large, well insulated tents, with proper furniture, wood floors and bathrooms with small refrigerators. All was comfy and warm with the provided heater and electric blanket. If you're worried about being in a glorified tent in the middle of a rainstorm -- don't be; the weather was rainy and windy all night when we were there but it was totally dry and cozy inside.
Breakfast will be the biggest treat of your stay (and maybe your month!). The fresh muffins, croissants, fruit and yogurt will be brought to your cabin by . . . wait for it . . . an African elephant! Seriously. It's really wild. They are kind enough to take pictures with your camera if you'd like so you can prove to your friends that Dumbo brought you your danish!
Overall, a really cool place that has comfy accommodations, but with a unique twist. Highly, highly recommended.

Guide tools are no longer legal in California and therefore not used at our facility to manage our elephants.
Yes, there are new habitats for the big cats and bears, and they are constantly/slowly expanding while the old "holding cages" are being dismantled as they are vacated.
From what we understand (from the "VIP Tour" information), this is a slow process because 1) they are still a couple million short of funding and 2) the process is largely done by the owner and a small staff of employees and volunteers.
Overall, I think they are a worthy "charity," and worth multiple stays and/or visits. And, it's fun to see progress, as slow-going as it may appear.
