Our visit to Napa Valley was definitely highlighted by our stay at Shady Oaks. Its location put us right in the midst of the finest vineyards and restaurants that Napa Valley has to offer and we were not too far from the trendy little boutiques in the village of St. Helena as well. Most importantly, the staff really went out of way to make our stay so comfortable. The breakfasts were incredible and the wine and cheese afternoon get togethers held by our hostess, Jenna, were a wonderful way to unwind with our fellow guests after a day of sightseeing. Jenna has a wonderful knowledge of everything you want to know about the area so it was helpful to get her helpful tips prior to arriving in Napa. Would definitely recommend to others.

The virtues of this B&B have been detailed over and over again in the other posts here, so let me say--they are correct. A couple items bear repeating, though.

I had never stayed at a B&B before, so really didn’t know what to expect. I was a little nervous that it would be too “cutesy” or just plain ridiculous. Picture the B&B episode of “The King of Queens,” and you’ll get the idea. Well, that couldn’t be farther from the reality of Shady Oaks. This place is perfect for touring the Napa area.

Kudos to Jenna, the Innkeeper, and Victoria, her assistant. These hard-working folks are the heart and soul of Shady Oaks, and ensure its success. Notice how nearly every review mentions Jenna making reservations, providing info, etc. She makes you feel like a VIP for your entire visit. Victoria works like a machine to quietly make your stay perfect. These two are the key to this establishment.

The entire place is beautiful and well landscaped. However, if you are very concerned with privacy, or just need your space, I’d suggest requesting the Sunny Hideaway or the Winery Retreat. They are in a separate building (one upstairs, the other downstairs, respectively) and as such are a little more isolated.

As stated in the other reviews, this is a wonderful place to stay and enjoy.

We were looking for a relaxing stay in wine country, and from start to finish this property, and especially the innkeeper and staff, provided everything we had hoped for.

The setting was, in our opinion, perfect. The Inn is just far enough from any downtown areas to provide tranquility, including opportunities for peaceful pre-breakfast morning walks along the vineyards lining Zinfandel lane.

The Innkeeper , Jenna, was a sheer delight. She is well-versed and knowledgeable about so many of the happenings in the area. She was instrumental in providing outstanding dining guidance, "inside" assistance in making private winery tour arrangements (if possible), and was just plain great to interact with.

Jenna, and the capable and friendly housekeeper Victoria, provided a variety of delicious breakfasts during our stay - served promptly at 9:00 A.M. The timing was perfect: it allowed us to relax before breakfast in the morning, and enjoy a nice breakfast in plenty of time to head out to some wineries - all of which typically open around 10:00 A.M. anyway. And at approximately 5:00 P.M., when everyone was typically returning after a day of activities in the area, Jenna was either on hand for, or had set out, a wonderful spread of cheese, crackers and some great wines for us to unwind with.

Both breakfast and the afternoon wine and cheese were ususally served under a large pergola in the back of the property, with vines growing over it. The setting was, again, just what we were looking for. The pergola area overlooked fruit trees and vineyards, enhancing the relaxation effect. And in the front of the property we could enjoy a game of bocci on the property's own court, or just sit and enjoy the huge, shady oaks (thus the namesake).

The rooms were comfortable and clean, and the history of the property as a working wine cellar make the experience that much more intriguing. There's more to say, but if you're looking for a place that takes you 'off the beaten path' and puts you right in the middle of wine country (versus the middle of a downtown area), then this is the place to start your own journey.

My husband and I decided to stay here for the weekend after we got married. We wanted to go some place close to home but with some good wine tasting, restaurants and weather - and what better place than Saint Helena and Napa?!
We have to traveled to numerous places across the US and other continents, but this is the first time that we turned around after seeing the property - we did not even check in! Of course - we couldn't check in as there was no one on the property to do so with. We arrived around 7PM on a Friday night after a very long busy drive from San Francisco, and nobody was there to greet us. A room was left open on the property, and we assumed it was ours. We did not use the room: this B&B does not match the online description and pictures. Walking to the room to check it out the floors creaked loudly. The room itself was old, sagging bed (not the bed I envisioned for my wedding night!) The window of the bathroom would not close, and did not have a screen and so not only was it drafty, there was an open invitation for numerous spiders and other critters to come join us! Because we got in later than we anticipated due to traffic, we had planned on curling up and watching a movie in bed. However, the flat screen TV in the room was the smallest TV I have ever seen- my laptop is actually larger. Given that this B&B does not have room service, with an email permission from the owner Lisa, my husband had taken the time to have a bottle of my favorite very expensive Champagne sent via UPS for us. It was not in the room when we arrived, and there was nobody on site to address the problem.
Needless to say, we left and drove back to our house. Early the next morning we reported that we would not be staying the weekend and inquired as to where our champagne was-- Lisa simply mentioned that her staff forgot about our bottle. When I requested she mail it to us, she said she would have to charge us to do so. She admits to the error of her staff but won't take the time and follow through with decent customer service to send us the bottle.
Paying well above $600 for a 2-night stay in a deprecated, poorly insulated and unstaffed property is simply ridiculous. And hard to believe, but the customer service is even worse than the property itself. Just terrible. I am not one to write bad reviews very often - I prefer to just let go of the bad experience I had but I feel it is my duty to let people know NOT to stay here. I wish I would have done more research before booking the VERY shady Shady Oaks Country Inn.

Spiders in the rooms, almost dead bees on the front porch, incredibly dusty and moldy smelling. Ceiling looked like it was caving in and painted over.

No stopper included with what looked like a nice bathtub. Oh well...

I was afraid of finding spiders in my room, after someone I know found one in his room the night before. So I got an angry voicemail and a promise to clean. Well, that didn't happen because I saw 2 large spiders crawling around on my walls, and trust me I don't go looking for them.

There's NO after-hours phone information if you have an emergency--the only way I was able to reach them when I needed to is because their cell phone number was on my phone from their prior angry voicemail. There was a misunderstanding about my room on the second night--normally that's fine, but they didn't leave me any way to find it or anyone to contact! Sure they claim to have left a note the first night, but it was buried in 3 long rambling notes that all looked the same.

AND, they left me a second angry, rude voicemail after I checked out. The only purpose of that one was to be vindictive and nasty about my distress call! What kind of hospitality is that?? I never write about my travel experiences but this one had to be shared.

We never saw her because she arrived late and left early for work each day. I made sure there were no spiders in her room after her partner told us he found one in his room and told us she was deathly afraid of spiders. We are in the country in the vineyards.I sprayed his room as soon as he told us and then made sure myself there were none in her room before she arrived. You can read the rest of our reviews to see how clean our rooms are. There is a stopper for the tub upstairs and I have no idea what she was talking about the ceiling accept it was built in the 1800's and has character. Warmly John

Shady Oaks is a quaint B&B. It is clean and reasonably well maintained. Further, the owners and inn keeper were extremely nice and helpful. Breakfast was first rate.

It is not, however, as some have advertised a luxurious property. It is 1970's decor. It is rustic (mice scampering about in the walls at night). The linens are low end. The bath is equally low end.

Decent bang for the buck. And a friendly place.

I agree with the past reviews, Jenna was wonderful but that is where the love ended.

When we arrived, no one was at the Inn to greet us and all of the rooms (including the main house) were unlocked. In the evening, after happy hour, it was the same story. We were the only ones at the Inn and all of the rooms, including the main house, were left unlocked. Since I am not familiar with the area, I felt extremely uncomfortable.

We stayed in the Sunny Hideaway which is the most expensive room and it needs to be updated.

As a few examples, the sink in the bathroom did not have hot water during our entire stay (3 nights). The owner was in to fix the faucet but the next morning, it was not working again. We spent our first evening killing 10+ spiders which had made our room their home. The inside light fixtures and outside windows also showed clear signs (dead bugs and spider webs abound) that a fumigation is in order. The room was generally clean but a deep cleaning (dirty woodwork) and painting (yellow spots on the bathroom ceiling) are certainly overdue.

I can appreciate staying in an older Inn is not the same experience as a new hotel and the charm of a B&B is never lost on me. What is hard to tolerate is staying in the most expensive room which has not been given the appropriate attention and upkeep.

We would have left after the first dead spider but the weather and Jenna were so nice.

My husband and I recently visited the Shady Oaks Country Inn to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We booked the trip on Travelocity which may have been part of the problem, since we did not know specifics about the room. The room (Country Blue Room) was charmingly decorated, but small. Most problematic, the minute bathroom included only a small shower stall and toilet; the sink was outside the bathroom and across the room, which creates issues for both hygiene and privacy. Since there were no other guests present our first two nights and only one other couple the second, we would have requested to change rooms, but there were no innkeepers present. After getting stuck in traffic on the way there, we arrived to find a note on the door directing us to our room. We neither saw nor heard from anyone else until the following morning, when a member of the staff arrived to serve breakfast. Each morning at 9 and each afternoon at 5, a very pleasant staff member-- someone different each time-- arrived to serve either breakfast or wine and cheese, then promptly disappeared. One of the owners may have been the person serving on our last morning, but unlike the others, she never introduced herself, so we never knew. Perhaps we arrived at an inconvenient date, but this was neither the welcoming nor comfortable experience we had hoped for on our first couple's vacation since our honeymoon, 20 years ago!

I am so sorry you were disappointed. You did book our least expensive room which is a little small. You could have asked one of "our very friendly staff members" to move to a larger room at breakfast and they would have done it free of charge. That is how we instruct them to handle unhappy guests. My wife and I were out of town the first two days but Lisa did serve you breakfast the last morning. I wish you would have told her that you were unhappy with the size of your room. We are not a traditional B & B as we do not live in the same house that houses our guests. Most of our guests enjoy that because they don't have to worry about disturbing anyone. It sounds like you were happy with our wine and cheese hour and our breakfast. Come see us again and we will upgrade you to one of our large rooms Warmly John

Oh God. We are extremely disappointed with this BB. My Fiance took me to our second trip to Sonoma, Napa, St. Helena. I was in charged of a romantic BB selection. He wanted a special place. I did spend a few hours reading reviews, searching maps and based on the reviews, I choose the Sandy Oaks. I even spoke with the owner. Really? She never showed up to to great us as she told me. Most of the comments mentioned the owners hospitality, we never saw them in premises. The comments talks about how special this place is, maybe was 70 years ago. The rooms are OLD, but OLD fashioned, the carpet needs URGENT replacement. Everything is 'military' scheduled. If you are not at the breakfast table at 9:00am, you will miss it. I think we missed understood the menu, but my fiance was expecting eggs benedict, his favorite breakfast. Instead we got sausage and french toast. (I am vegetarian, didn't have a choice!!!)
The worse, the pictures in their website are misleading. Not from their premises.
We are frequent travelers, a semi retired couple in our early 40's, not a place for us.
This place is worth $89.00, we paid almost $250.00! - unbelievable!
Again, if you are a yuppy or an established professional, this is not a place for you.
Keila

After 30 years as an innkeeper I am still amazed sometimes. Our staff reads all our reviews. They work so hard to make sure that everything is just right. So I want to say to Hope, Lilia and Patricia I know this one bothers you. Read all the other ones around this and you will really know how our guests ( and we) feel about you and your hard work.

Here is the positives and negatives:

Positives - good location, good breakfast, Hope (their employee) was very nice

Negatives - place is pretty dated, if you are looking for ANY luxuries this B&B is not for you, they charge extra for water, saw the owner one time the entire weekend, not nearly as scenic or nice as their pictures might suggest, very inflexible on breakfast (if you cant have breakfast exactly at 9am then you get no breakfast.

All in all it was just ok because we were not in our rooms much, but if you are looking for a true B&B experience or a place that is scenic or nice, there are much better places in the valley.

I am so sorry these guests were so unhappy. We go out of our way to make our guests happy as you can tell from our past reviews. Every room at Shady Oaks has just been freshly painted within the last month. New pictures and linens in all of our rooms. I don't know what is so dated. I checked these guests in myself and they were unhappy about us not doing a special breakfast for them at 8:30. I am sure I was not rude about it and apologized for the scheduling problem they had. We serve our breakfast at 9:00 because all the wineries open at 10:00 to 10:30. We pride ourselves in serving a full sit down champagne breakfast which can only work at one time. We cannot make our other guests unhappy to accommodate these guests who had scheduled a tour at 10:00 am. They did not stay the second morning for breakfast (which I served) I assume again because of a scheduling problem. If you read our other reviews you will see that service is one of our finer points. Yes our breakfast is served at 9:00 am. Not on the dot but around that time so all the guests can join us. Again I am sorry these guests were unhappy but I think this kind of review is mean spirited. If breakfast was so important to them maybe they could have asked us when our breakfast was served before they scheduled their day.
