A lovely venue with wonderful staff. My husband and I stopped here for an overnight on our way from Yorba Linda to Phoenix and were thoroughly delighted. Such a treasure in the midst of downtown Riverside. The decor is delightfully over the top. Our Raincross room on the 3rd floor overlooked the swimming pool and was spacious and very clean. The food in the restaurant was excellent. We had good service and enjoyed our dinner very much. We heard that the hotel is wonderfully decorated for Christmas and will try to come back then for another visit.

The outside is a beautiful example of a historic well cared for property. The public areas as well. Now lets get to the rooms, hallways and oh those creepy narrow staircases. In order to gain access to rooms, one must get off the elevator and wind around thru poorly lit narrow corridors, up and down winding steps. Who is interested in staying in Hearst Castle? Seems like a fire trap. When we all complained, they begrudgingly found other rooms that were more accessible. Big charges for valet parking and internet. Any hotel has free internet access in 2021.

Los Angeles, California1 contribution
I’m a Riverside native, and decided to book a stay for my daughters 10th birthday. We live in Los Angeles, so the destination was a short drive. I called to ask if early check in was a possibility, and was told we could arrive at 2pm vs. their typical 4pm check in. Once there, we were told a different story, and waited until 4:30pm to check in. This was just the beginning of what would become the most awful weekend experience. Poolside service was a 1 on a scale of 1-10. Our server went out of her way to be rude. Food was delivered whenever, with no explanation as to when the rest would be served. Orders were over cooked or wrong all together. Towels were guarded by the pool staff as well, making it a lengthy conversation to get enough towels for the family. For $249 a night, find an Air BnB or VRBO. Motel 6 does a better job. Also to note: they have signs posted requiring patrons to wear masks upon entry, follow distancing protocols, etc. The reality is 95% of the hotel guests don’t wear masks, and the staff doesn’t either.

This hotel is an oasis of old world California located in the middle downtown Riverside. The grounds are meticulously manicured and lit very decorated and attractively at night. There are several portraits of old school California politicians, like Richard Nixon, lining the halls. This was a short stay for me so I didn't get to explore much. Definitely not your cookie cutter hotel experience. Every room is a bit different and the building has a lot of character. Very nice courtyard which also has a restaurant there. It's a romantic experience. My room was nicely appointed in traditional furniture. A very pleasant and conservative experience overall.
