2020 has mostly been a disaster as most rationale thinking people will agree. One of the casualties of the year has been vacations as many of us have simply just stayed home. We had a great vacation scratched in the Spring when COVID lockdowns and air travel along with hotel availability literally fell off the cliff. Fast forward to September and things seemed to be getting less restrictive and the opportunity to get away seemed to be within reach. Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa had been on our radar for many years to visit but for one reason or another it never happened. Until this year, oddly enough. We checked with our usual list of 4 and 5 star properties but felt uneasy from what we were hearing back from them and their reviews from customers were forbidding at best. So, we decided to give Rancho Valencia a shot and were encouraged by the favorable recent reviews we read. We made reservations in September to stay at the property in October, arriving 10/19 and departing 10/22 (three nights). With some excellent guidance from Steve Homolac and Katherine “Kat” Lengyel-Leahu at the front desk, we booked a Palm One Bedroom Suite King Villa, which turned out to be magnificent; spacious, smartly appointed, private and comfortable. When you book upper-end luxury resorts you should expect great service, excellent accommodations and appealing amenities. Rancho Valencia got off to a fast start after we booked our stay by immediately reaching out to us with personalized communications from both a reservations representative and then a few days later from the Concierge Team who immediately set-up dinner reservations and activities and followed up with a well-organized itinerary sent back to us within a day. This was stunning to us as our old favorite resort could not even reserve a time for us at the pool let alone book dinner and other activities ahead of time. Most resorts have reverted to blaming any service hiccups on COVID-19. Not Rancho Valencia. Our Concierge agents, who need special recognition, set the tone early and it just got better. Our initial Concierge contact was with Reily, who could not have been more pleasant and then throughout our stay, the aforementioned, Kat Lengyel-Leahu, who prepared and sent us our itinerary and would continue to cater to every request we had throughout our stay. Let me take you through some examples of our experiences at this true five-star resort. When we arrived at the property with our detailed itinerary already in hand, our first encounter was the front gate which is monitored 24/7 and provides security to guests during their stay. Our initial greeting was from a very pleasant gentleman named Robert who welcomed us to Rancho Valencia. after confirming our identity as guests, he politely directed us to the next step of our check-in which was a very brief and innocuous COVID-19 screening which included a temperature check at our car windows and then providing us with color coded bracelets to wear while on the property to signal to anyone we encountered that we were temperature checked and cleared at the gate before entering the property. I think the resort handled this process very well as they did not create an uncomfortable or intrusive evaluation and did not ask a multitude of personal questions. Very professional and effective. The short drive up the rustic and tree lined road to the resort lobby ended with another pleasant greeting by valet services and our soon-to be bellman, Brooklyn. He led us to reservation check-in and Concierge where we met Kat in person for the first time. She quickly checked us in, gave us room keys and a map and reviewed our itinerary with us. She directed us back to the front where Brooklyn was waiting for us in a golf cart and he led us to our villa as we followed in our vehicle. Once we were at the villa, Brooklyn got our luggage into our room and answered any questions we had about the room or how to get around the property, such as the shortest walk to the main pool from our villa. Very professional and friendly. We had requested an early check-in so that we could settle in, get unpacked and enjoy some time at the pool during our first day in. It was a nice positive bonus to receive that benefit. So off to the pool we went, where we found a clean and organized area in a beautiful setting (seating and lounge chairs spaced nicely for distancing). Our poolside food and beverage server was Arnie, who could not have been more attentive and pleasant. And now we can give five stars to our first food encounter. Probably one of the best sandwiches we have had in quite some time, and it was just from their pool menu. This gave us some great hope that the full-service restaurant would be a good experience as we would be dining there later that night. We dined at the resort’s Pony Room restaurant. A nice menu selection of a wide range of foods from beef to chicken to Mexican. We a couple of servers and our most memorable and favorite was Manuel who also would remember us on subsequent evenings and always come over and say hello. The food was wonderful and they also had a nice wine and alcohol beverage selection. We love to get room service for breakfast when we get away and we have had good experiences and real bad experiences with it in the past. But now we can say we had an excellent experience with room service for every morning of our stay. Extremely fast, accurate and delicious; the food was even hot when it arrived. One of the added perks every morning at Rancho Valencia is receiving the morning paper of your choice from their selection list (Wall Street Journal as an example) and each room receives a fresh carafe of chilled orange juice delivered to their door and left on the service shelf outside the door. What a great way to get the day started. And if you choose to do so you have coffee makers and coffee in each room to brew your own if you don’t have it delivered with room service. As the day goes on and you get hungry and need a snack, no worries because each room has complimentary snacks (chips, popcorn, energy bars, etc.) and unlimited beverages such as water, soft drinks, ice tea, etc. in your room frig. We dined at the Pony Room for the next two nights based on our great first night experience as we had our eye on a couple of other menu items we wanted to try and thus cancelled our reservations at other restaurants we had in town. Other than the food continuing to impress the next two evenings, so did our service. We wanted to give a special thanks and recognition to our fabulous server we had those two nights by the name of Marshall. He was wonderful and always so attentive plus a great sense of humor and conversationalist. Be sure to request to be seated in Marshall’s section when you dine at the Pony Room. And by the way, the deserts are off the charts incredible and large enough to remind you that you are on vacation and it doesn’t matter for a couple nights. One last note to add, if you have ever had the desire to drive a beautiful Bentley automobile or if you are accustomed to driving one, take advantage of the very special perk the property offers which is the use of one of these beautiful vehicles for several hours to just drive around into town or just cruise the countryside in it. It is first come first serve each morning so if you call first thing in the morning you may snag one for the day or evening. Well, that is a wrap on this review and we would like to thank the wonderful and hard working people we met during our stay Rancho Valencia and give a true 5 star to this beautiful property. We encourage everyone to go and enjoy a first class experience from start to finish.

I recently stayed at The Rancho Valencia Resort in Rancho Santa Fe in an Olive Grove Suite and was so blown away by this gorgeous suite. 1st, it's HUGE!! It has so much space, both inside and out. My suite had a very comfortable king size bed with the softest sheets I have ever slept on, 2 TV's, a complimentary mini bar that was restocked every day, a beautiful sitting area and a very large bathroom with a steam shower, separate bath and a heated TOTO bidet toilet. It also has a very large patio with lounge chairs with very soft cushions, a large table and chairs and most importantly...a hot tub/plunge pool. My favorite amenity the hotel offered was the fresh squeezed orange juice they deliver every morning with your choice of newspaper. We had a delicious dinner at The Pony Room, outside under the stars, listening to music. It was a lovely evening. I would highly recommend Rancho Valencia for it's beautiful rooms, gorgeous property, great food but most especially, their staff. Excellent Customer Service!! I will be back.

To start off, I've been wanting to check out this resort for a while. Everything initially drew me in from the charming casita style rooms, foliage, and amenities. I spent two nights at the resort mid October of 2020 (This review relates to the room and the way Rancho Valencia handled it) ROOM: The room was beautifully appointed and spacious. One of the best aspects of the corner Agave suite was having a patio with a large outdoor table which was perfect for doing work. The two sun loungers were a plus too! I ran into problems the first night at the resort. After dinner, I attempted to take a bath. After getting in the tub I attempted to turn the jets on ( To note: The bathtub was one of the main reasons why I chose this resort ). What happened? The lights throughout the bathroom started getting dimmer and brighter simultaneously while the jets made strange noises for around 10-20 seconds - then they instantly turned off. I was worried this was electrical related so I got out of the tub immediately. That same night - I tried charging my phone on one of the outlets attached to the base of their lamps. Not one single outlet on the base worked. This wasn't too big of a deal but I expected to have at least one working outlet near the bed! After waking up the next morning I called the front desk letting them know about the two issues in the room - I let them know that I would be away from the room from 9-11:30am for their convenience. 12:00pm noon hits - I get back to the room and continue to wait for a reply. I ended up calling the front desk and they informed me that there wasn't anything they could do to fix the bathtub. I mentioned the outlet and they didn't have an answer for that either! This was when I asked them if we could move to a room with a functioning bathtub...Meanwhile, we go to the pool while waiting for our new room. After a few hrs at the pool, one of the awesome staff came by and gave us the room key for us. We got to the new room and it was completely different (not in a good way) The patio was at least 50% smaller and the outdoor table wasn't big enough for two people to get work done as we were able to do so in the first room. At this point, we were extremely frustrated having to choose between a room without a functioning bath/electrical outlets or the second room they put us in... with the tiny patio space. Mind you; the resort was not sold out as they had rooms available online so I'm not sure why they put us in a faraway room with a tiny patio? It felt like punishment. The property is beautiful along with the amazing spa pool, pony room, and valet staff. However, there are so many other 5* options in Southern Ca. I was quite saddened by the way Rancho Valencia handled the situation. I'm not sure I would stay at the resort again.

This is a gorgeous property well off the beaten path. Let’s be clear, this is a completely five-star luxury property and is filled with very kind, dedicated staff for the most part which makes a review like this very hard. THE GOOD The wait staff, housekeepers, front gate personnel, and valet were all wonderful. You can clearly tell they are seeking to serve the guest experience and make your $1400 a night experience worth every penny. I truly enjoyed each interaction with every single one of them. The rooms are gorgeous and well thought out. From the mini fridge stocked with all your favorite beverages (included) to the enormous bathroom with TORO bidet. Every part of the room is wonderful. The nights with live music on the lawn were also lovely. The selection of food and beverages was also well done. A bit pricey, but expected. THE BAD Parking for more than one car can be a challenge. It’s very far away from most restaurants and their main lux restaurant isn’t taking customers. You’re limited to Room Service or the Pony Room. During a time of Covid, you expect the room condition to be perfect. So when we got in late and slept in the next morning, we were greeted by a pair size 12 men’s Farragamo shoes neatly tucked under the coffee table. It sets my OCD on fire. Of course, there were tons of apologies save one comment that suggested my girlfriend may have had a guest over! THE UGLY Two things completely stood out as out of character for such a high end property. First, we made two separate requests for an early check in around noon. Both went unanswered. Although they responded to the email, the request was completely ignored. We were arriving early and wanted to spend time at the property. We called on our way in and was told check in was 4 pm but they would work to accommodate us. We had breakfast around 1030 and waited for hours for a notification. Nothing came. Upon checking back in, we were told simply the room was not ready yet but checkout was noon. By 145 we checked a second time and were told the guests were provided a late check out and they had no idea when the room would be ready. I had been sitting in 96 degree outside temperatures in a suit for 3.5 hours and was never told about the late check out and the impossibility of an early check in. While I understand the hotel is under no obligation to check us in early, a simple honest answer would have given me an opportunity to enjoy my time out of the heat somewhere else. Second, the pool reception staff were not receptive. There is a main pool and a spa pool. We were given zero instructions regarding them. On Saturday we elected to have a pool day. We went to the main pool and were met with a sign that we needed to only use the entrance farthest from our room. No problem. However, other guests entered through that gate and were addressed first despite arrival order. Small issue. Big issue. We were asked three times if we had reservations. When we explained we were never informed that reservations were required for such a small property the pool receptionist took exception and indicated he would do his best to fit us in. Mind you, there were 30 open seats and only two families with children currently present. When we inquired about an adult pool, we were told about the spa pool. We shot over. Now this is a spread out property and we are tooling around in our swimsuits. We get there and nobody is manning the outside reception. We wait until what appears to be housekeeping addresses us. Their first questions were about reservations. After some wrangling, we were directed inside the spa reception where three young ladies were chit chatting about their day. When we inquired about lounge chairs (again over 20 open with only 6 people in the area) we were AGAIN asked about reservations. They begrudgingly walked us out to the outdoor pool reception to check if they could “fit us in.” They told us we could have two chairs for two hours but no longer. $1400 a night and we can’t get a pool chair for more than two hours. We were told we must leave at 2:30 pm without reminder. The pool is small and the other staff were very good. I’ve never experienced that kind of crotchety rudeness at such a nice property and certainly not from young pool receptionists. It topped off what could have been a great weekend with a very sour taste. We just got back from The Brando and Four Seasons in French Polynesia. We are very familiar with five star properties and stay at least twice a month. This needs to be corrected and accommodated tor.
