We enjoyed our time spent at the Martine Inn. It was an interesting and relaxing base from which to explore the Pacific Grove area of California. Each guestroom was unique, and we were more than happy with 'the cottage' which had windows on three sides, always a bonus, and situated above a garage containing vintage cars, and with views of the Pacific, and of courtyards. The only minor downside was a slight stale odour in the bathroom which also contained one or two items which were not in pristine condition. But the overall charm of the place more than made up for this. Breakfast at the Martine is quite an experience. Your order arrives on an enormous, and very heavy silver tray. It is a bit of showmanship, but quite a rewarding experience, especially as the food itself is so very well cooked and delicious. The chef really does provide an exquisite, high-end meal which is also presented in a visually interesting way. It was nice afterwards to take breakfast coffee out into the main courtyard, which is a pleasant and peaceful haven, with running water from a fountain. Off road parking at the front of the hotel was complimentary.

Brilliant location and service, but best times have obviously been 20 years ago. The buliding needs deep cleaning, refurbishment and repairs. I feelo sorry for the very polite and helpful people in the service area.

I really wanted to like the Martine Inn but at $329/night…it just wasn’t worth the money. It’s a grand old building but we found it a bit worn and thread bear. We spent two nights in the Carriage Room in July 2022. Here are our observations: * The room had a musty smell indicative of the need for a good spring cleaning. It wasn’t that is was dirty, but the carpet and drapes needed cleaning (dusty and stained). * The room was filled with lovely antiques but there was too much furniture, making it difficult to maneuver. For example, there was a fire place which we never would have lit since the chairs in front were way too close. It was a total fire hazard. Since the room was so small, there was no place to move them to. * The King bed had a beautiful antique headboard and footboard. Since it was a headboard was a double (they didn’t have large beds back in the day), the headboard was secured to the wall. We didn’t have an issue with that…it was the way it was secured…with an eyebolt and wire. Come on folks…You can do better than that. * The toilet bowl was loose and creaked terribly when you sat on it. * The room door was glass (very pretty) but there was a light directly outside that was turned on at night. Don’t misunderstand…I get the need for the light but it lit up the inside of the room like it was daylight, making it difficult to sleep. * The breakfast was mediocre at best. We ordered the crepes which were rubbery, lukewarm, and looked like canned fruit. * The appetizers for the wine/cocktail hour sat on the table for hours prior to the event. The simply looked old. We didn’t touch them. * The grounds and plants looked tired. I’d be embarrassed if my yard looked like that. The external grounds above the car parking area and around the walkway needed weeding. Definitely not four stars. On the positive side, the inn is in a wonderful location and close to everything. I just wish “elegance” still described it.

My husband and I really enjoyed and we'll definitely come back. The breakfast was delicious, nicely presented, and in front of the large windows facing the ocean. We chose a room with courtyard windows which ended up being really nice - we had the sound of the fountain and a view of the flowers. We got in the first night after the snacks and drinks had ended, and staff was nice enough to make us a plate to take up to our room. Pacific Grove is also just a really nice place to stay. It's all the beauty of the bay without the touristy hustle and bustle of Cannery Row.

Not sure really how to capture this hotel. We went here based on reviews from several sites, and were frankly disappointed and a little mystified when we got there. Our first impression was that the place is just old and shabby. The grounds are full of weeds (like, foot tall in some places!), with a broken concrete pot right on the entry stairs, and the paint is peeling in places. Inside, I know it’s supposed to feel Victorian, and there are indeed some gorgeous antiques. But the overall feeling is just sort of unkempt, a little stuffy, and some oddly -cut corners. Our room was in the downstairs space, with narrow stairs leading to it, and a nice shared sitting room outside of it. Everything felt very well cleaned. The room itself had no comfortable seating and instead had antique chairs with shredding upholstery and popping springs. The bed was comfortable, but had really plain linens that felt dated compared to rooms I’ve stayed in lately, and a thin blanket that left us cold our first night. The shower was literally the worst I’ve had in years and years; the pressure was so low I could barely rinse the shampoo out of my hair, and the shower curtain stuck to me. Getting in and out of it was profoundly unsafe, and I had my husband assist me to keep from slipping. We had breakfast here one of our two mornings. It was a cooked-to-order omelet, with fresh fruit. I had homemade granola instead, and both were very good. Service was nice and personable. The wine service in the evenings we passed on both nights. Wine in decanters and a plastic-wrapped plate with some cheese, crackers, and veggies and dip. I truly think in its prime, this was a great hotel. Now, it just feels old. It needs updating, and for the price point, some things should be upgraded. The staff are, I think, trying hard to make things work, and the location is really great. I rarely give negative reviews, but feel folks should know what they are getting before booking here.

Lovely stay- It’s a very charming property that has a great view of the ocean right off of the recreation trail. The location is perfect - between the main street in PG and very near to Cannery Row and the Aquarium. The staff were super helpful and friendly. The rooms were spacious, nicely decorated, and quiet. I liked that the property had a lot of outdoor seating/garden areas. To top it all off they serve a wonderful home cooked breakfast! Overall, I was happy with our stay and would come back!

I booked the Suite. The white carpet in my room was badly stained especially at the entrance, and generally it was in a sad state. The refrigerator was a small cheap white box sitting out on the floor completely at odds with the supposed antique feel and charm of the place. One wall of the room was directly on the sidewalk. The entire place looked and felt run down and unloved. The garden, especially the entrance was completely unkempt and looked like nothing had been done for months. A huge disappointment especially considering the price- worth about half of what I paid. Never again will I stay at this property.

This Inn was close to Old Fisherman's Warf. it is a very historical/old/vintage place. Beautifully furnished with gorgeous antiques. Staff were very friendly. Breakfast was very good, literally served on a silver platter with a gorgeous view of the Bay while you eat. We stayed in the 'Monterey" room. it was lovely. The ONLY inconvenience was that the shower is in a corner of the room.....in a small closet type enclosure. I am 5'7" and weigh 180 pounds and I barely fit in the shower - not much room to turn around. HOWEVER, I am not mentioning that as a negative - just know that it is a tiny shower. We would ABSOLUTELY stay here again. It is just a great place to stay, there is absolutely NO negative about this place. I would gladly stay in the same room again. Parking is a little tight but we managed to always find a space to the side of the Inn. If you have to park on the street level there are some stairs to negotiate. Ask for a room on the first floor and try to park on the street level of the side entrance.....and ENJOY!

Staying at the Martine Inn was a wonderfully surprising experience. The Inn is tastefully and lovingly furnished with period furniture pieces. It is an old building but is good shape. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and we experienced a wonderful night's sleep. The views from either the rooms in the front or the dining area out onto the bay are beautiful with the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks directly across the street. Breakfast served in the dining room to order on beautiful silver trays. Our first time, we only stayed one night but in the future will make it longer to be able to enjoy the Inn itself.

We just celebrated our 43rd wedding anniversary with 2 nights at the Martine Inn, our second visit. There is no better location in Monterey/Pacific Grove, and of course the house itself is a masterpiece; but the real prize is the staff. Every one of them made us feel welcome instantly. Delicious breakfast made to order is served on a silver platter in the amazing great room overlooking Monterey Bay. The beds are comfy, and we enjoyed the wood fireplace in our room overlooking the water. I love that they have a funky but functional pool table out by the back patio. Ping pong too! If you are a piano player, check out the beautiful baby grand in the library. What more could anyone want? We are already looking forward to our next visit.
