Hotel's Favorite
We had a family wedding, the guests stayed at the Kissel. The beds were so comfortable, the showers were like warm rain and our room was nice and quiet. Their valet was prompt with parking and returning the cars, the bellman was attentive and friendly. Front desk staff were very helpful, courteous and friendly as well.

I stayed here with my 8 year old just overnight but was a little disappointed. The front desk person was very friendly which was nice but the rooms are quite small but cute. We had a terrace room which had a little urban patio off of it. I’m not sure how practical that was though. There was a jar of cannabis gummies in one of the drawers which might be nice for some but not nice to find when I’m staying with my kid. I’m guessing the prior guest left it and the drawers weren’t cleaned.There was also a hair in one of the wash cloths so probably housekeeping could use some improvement.
The restaurant is integrated into lobby and the menu at their restaurant is VERY limited and was VERY loud at dinner. I was also told they were too busy for room service which was a bummer because we had a very long day. I will say that the margarita that I had was excellent.
All in all it wasn’t a bad experience but not really worth another visit and I’m glad that I didn’t stay longer.

Staff are extraordinarily kind and helpful here and the location is good for downtown Oakland. It's a new hotel so rooms are in good condition. Unfortunately our room was not clean when we checked in (human hairs in the sink) and housekeeping did not service the room despite repeated requests and supposedly daily service. There is no soundproofing between the hallway and the rooms. You can hear literally everything at all hours of the day and night. Looks like Hyatt overspent on finishes and under-spent on management and the things that matter for a good night's sleep.

The hotel staff could not be nicer. They were really trying their best. The hotel is brand new and still working out some kinks. I ended up in the ER the day I was checking out, and they generously allowed me a 4 pm checkout -- much appreciated. My room was noisy but next time I might try an inside room that didn't look out onto the street. The fridge is minuscule. Nice bathroom amenities. Only 41 TV channels and no local sports. Chromecast for streaming. Good wifi. Housekeeping was a bit spotty but they were responsive when I called and asked for things I needed.

Looking past the trendy design and esthetic of this hotel, it a nice, but completely average stay. In the room, it felt like they prioritized looking chic on social over comfort, which made some elements of the room feel cheap or not thought through. For example, the mini fridge in the room in an empty minibar fridge, so you can't actually put anything (other than tiny bottles of alcohol) in it. There's no door on the walk-in shower, so water gets everywhere in the bathroom. The blackout curtains have no valence, so a significant amount of light comes in from the top of the window. The metal desk was cold and made a loud noise anytime I moved anything around on it. I know that's a bit nitpicky, but made what would feel like an otherwise lux room less appealing.
That said, I was very comfortable the whole time and the staff was excellent. I would stay here again, but I would look to see if I could book a better room at a different hotel at the same price point first.

The Kissel is a nice, hip hotel. It seemed new to me. The staff was friendly. My main reasons for a mediocre review is that I was there on a business trip and I was given a super small room with what seemed like a half desk without a real desk chair (see picture; the chair looked more like a stool for a cosmetic table). Also, there was no plug for my computer by the desk so I need to unplug the mini-fridge. Also, I had requested a room on a high floor but was given one on the third floor. When I asked for a higher floor I was told that I had reserved a room with a terrace, and all of the terraces were on the third floor. Later on I noticed balconies on floors all the way to the top. Maybe a terrace is different from a balcony, but I wish that had been mentioned. Also, the neighborhood is okay, but if you walk down the street you will pass homeless people on every block (in case anyone wants to avoid that)

Room cleanliness became a question, upon arriving at the room a representative of the maid staff came in to replace the bedding, after which a second room was requested. Upon arriving at the second room the same activity occurred. When asked what prompted the change the representative was unable to provide a response in english.

Staff at this location went the extra mile to ensure my girlfriend birthday experience was a success. We were provided VIP access to the rooftop bar High5 with complimentary drinks. Our room change was smooth and the sparkling wine and champagne added the finishing touch.

I normally avoid staying inside Oakland for business in the East Bay, but really wanted to give this new property a try, and am glad I did.
They've done so many things correct here. The hotel is in wonderful shape and is not a cookie cutter property. While I only stayed 1 night, I'd absolutely return.
As a Globalist I was upgraded to an enormous corner suite with an equally large and impressive bathroom. I love that the windows opened, but when closed there was no problem at all with street noise. The room had so many nice little touches, like motion activated nightlights built into the bedframe and a mattress enclosed in a stain resistant covering. Those are small things that let me know a hotel knows what it is doing.
I found the staff to be friendly. At check-in, the front desk agent was on a break so the GM checked me and she said hi every time I saw her throughout the stay.
The only slight hiccup I'd mention is the front desk agent who checked me out and understanding of Globalist benefits. Per Hyatt T&C's Globalist are supposed to have the destination/amenity fees waived, but still enjoy the benefit of what those fees cover. My market items were not initially removed due to the credit, but when I mentioned something about it, the cost was then credited.
As far as the parking situation, you wouldn't want to do anything other than valet in the East Bay, and I found the attendants friendly and prompt.

I take a lot of trips to Oakland (or did before the pandemic) and never really had a go-to hotel that I wanted to go back to until now.
The big kudos here go to the design team.
The communal spaces all had a great vibe that went beyond just looking good in pictures and actually made you want to stick around and get comfortable.
And the room was full of the type of thoughtful and modern little design decisions that make a big difference, like the motion-sensor lighting strips along either side of the base of the bed that are so helpful when you're turning in.
I'm glad to have a go-to Oakland hotel for future trips....

I think it was a fixed shower head. Not curtained, but half wall of glass. Worked just fine!
It's the pedals with the fabric straps that are adjustable with the metal binding clips.
