If you are looking for a solid 3-star inn near the South Gate of Yosemite, this is it! Very quiet and quaint with nice staff and a generous happy hour. The breakfast was also very good and had a lot of options. It is within close proximity to Fish Camp, Bass Lake and is located in the town of Oakhurst which has a mix of independent and chain stores. I was surprised to see it listed as part of the SLH (small luxury hotel) network as I wouldn't call it luxurious, but it definitely has the potential with an overhaul of the bedrooms, bathrooms and some additional investment in the landscaping/amenities.
My husband and I had a great stay here for our anniversary. It was exactly what we expected for a small inn just outside of Yosemite. Breakfast was excellent but we weren't around very much for the afternoon snacks/wine (I also brought my own, because I'm picky). Myra was wonderful and she gave us excellent advice about Yosemite and Bass Lake (not to mention, her food was amazing!). Dolores was highly entertaining and I enjoyed interacting with her. The hot water took a bit to kick in, but there was definitely hot water, and the hot tub was wonderful! We didn't use the fireplace, but it gave us the mountain vibes. ;) June was an excellent time to stay and the weather was perfect! No real complaints, would stay here again for sure!
Well this place could be so good but it’s a bit of a shambles We arrived to the wonderful Delores she was the best thing about this place The rooms are clean but so badly designed no idea Wine at 6 pm was nice Breakfast was a mess without Deloris here they used old stale bread and service was all over the place The location remember is 2 hours drive to the main part of the park Nice hotel but really needs input
Location was nice, not much traffic noise if that bothers you. The bed was very comfy. Room was nice, bathroom very small. Few things,,,,I couldn’t charge my car because it was not working. This was one of the main reasons I booked here, so that was disappointing. Breakfast kinda blah, nothing like it’s shown on the site. The tv,,,,not even sure how that worked. I’m sure that doesnt matter to most, but I was coming from Mammoth to Mariposa to meet a friend, so it was for only one night. I just wanted to crash and relax with some movies, because I was heading to SoCal the following day.
This inn is under new management and really needs to work out some little details, so here is my my two cents: Soften your mattresses with pillow tops; provide 1/2 & 1/2 in room frig for a much better coffee experience. Inns should never use dry creamer packets. Provide more counter space in bathrooms. Update your decor to more modern style. Provide outdoor furniture at the cottage and night lighting on stairs. The cottage neighbors are distracting and noisy. Breakfast was excellent. Staff very accommodating. Overall clean.
We stayed for one night after our visit to Yosemite. The cottage is located in a very quiet and private area. You definitely get the Bed & Breakfast feeling if that’s what you’re looking for! The service was great. We got to check in very quickly after a long day of exploring the park. The room was very clean and organized. Breakfast was served from 7-10am in a buffet style. They have a cozy seating area where you can enjoy the food and relax. Overall our stay was amazing!!
We’ve stayed at several inns throughout the country and have looked forward to staying at Houndstooth for the past 3 years based in their website and customer testimonials. (Our trips to Yosemite were postponed once due to forest fires and then due to Covid but this year we were able to go!) We arrived to see the grounds looking a bit drab and a notice in the window about a change in ownership… We experienced during our four night stay a very inconsistent customer experience. While still a decent place, it wasn’t the highlight of our trip we were anticipating. Processes and host/hostess services were uneven: the hostess for the first two nights was engaging and a great server, topping off wine and making the most she could of the limited cheese and cracker plate set out. The room was full of lively talk. On the other hand, the male host on the second two nights was distant and put out a half bottle of wine, and the exact same plate of cheese each night. (Not the same type of cheese tray, but the exact SAME tray that was out for three hours each night — but not enjoyed since no one felt comfortable participating those nights.) Other examples: our TV didn’t work for two days; the new cook who took over that week from the former chef who quit the week before we arrived didn’t show up for breakfast the final morning of our stay; housekeeping service was every other day; the bowl of fruit in the lobby was never refreshed; and neither was the daily forecast on the quaint chalkboard in the entry. An Inn needs to have an identity and consistent processes. The staff didn’t exhibit a personal connection to the property, probably since they also work at the chain hotels in town. Before posting this review I requested to speak to the new owners and was contacted by a consulting management company by email but Belinda never returned my call. This Inn has potential to be great but only if the new owners decide on the customer experience they want to provide and then implement consistent processes and train their staff to deliver that experience. Then again, perhaps they have and are willing to make this an average place and ride the former reputation for a while.…
Staff were friendly and room was spacious and clean. However, we left feeling quite disappointed with our stay. We were considering a variety of options to stay near Yosemite, and the food was what had really sold us on Hounds Tooth. We saw many pictures (both on their website and uploaded by guests) of very tasty-looking food. Our food was not good. The French toast was dry and bland, and the breakfast buffet the next day was comparable to a motel continental breakfast. The second day, we were told that the chef would not show up, which I see that another reviewer experienced not long before us. One of the mini muffins tasted like moth balls. The dinner reception was also not in line with what was advertised, but that was at least closer in quality. Considering that we paid over $580 for two nights, we expected better. And if it is advertising itself as a bed and breakfast or a small luxury hotel, this certainly did not live up to either of those labels.…
Wow, what a great spot with an incredible breakfast. Stayed for two lovely nights. Staff was exceptional and evening wine and cheese was a great way to meet other guests. Very easy trip into the South Gate or over to Bass Lake to watch sunset. Spectacular!
The staff at the Houndstooth Inn was very kind and accommodating, however, the property is in need of updating and deep cleaning. Our room did not feel clean and had several bugs. The shower water would reach a lukewarm at best. The breakfast really was very good and along with the staff the best part of our stay. On our last day the chef did not show up and the electricity went out without there being much concern given to this. It is definitely not a small luxury hotel as advertised and is overpriced for what it offers.
