I recently stayed at the hotel for 10 days. The first several days were on my own; the last half of the stay my husband joined me. Due to lack of room availability (my issue since I booked late), I had a room that overlooked the driveway for the first part of my stay, and a beautiful Bay Room for the second part of the stay. For context, pre-COVID I travelled around 120 - 150 days a year for work. I am just getting back into travel mode, and boy everything feels more difficult these days. I am a total princess when it comes to hotels, and tend to stay at Four Seasons, Langham, Peninsula, Mandarin - you get the idea. The reason for the choice of this hotel was that I am a member of a reciprocal club, and that gave me access to the Balboa Bay Club, which is right beside and affiliated with the resort. I am a huge swimmer, and having a "swimmable pool" is incredibly important to me. With that as context, I will give you the good, the bad and the ugly... The good/great: - Nicole at the concierge desk is a total standpoint. She was unbelievably helpful and was just "on" everything. She made things as seamless as possible for me. - Melissa - she worked at the cafe Blend. She could make your day just with her smile. And I was pretty obsessed with the yogourt parfait. - The Bay View King room was lovely. There was some weird stuff like the hotel didn't ever want to provide enough towels to the room, but the room itself and the view was great. - Almost without exception the staff was very nice. - the pool on the "Club side" was great for swimming. - the housekeeping staff was outstanding The "meh": - the resort property was very small so no real place to be at the resort except on your balcony - the food and room service was okay (as I said above, the yogourt parfait at Blend was to die for) The ugly: - there were at least two times I tried to call the valet and literally got no answer. The phone just rang and rang and rang. Not great when you need to get your car. i was "forced' both times to go down to the valet desk from my room to request the car. The valet staff themselves were great, so I don't know if it was understaffing or what, but one day when I had to leave prior to 6:00 am for meetings, I was having a bit of a panic when I could not get anyone on the phone at the front desk, valet, guest services, etc. I found out when I came to find someone that the only person on duty at that time worked as the valet as well, so he wasn't there to answer the phone as he was getting a car. This was not his fault - but the staffing should have been better. - I had my luggage sent via courier to the hotel in advance of our stay, as well as having packages sent to the hotel. Getting them was really a bit of a nightmare. I will spare you the details, but thank goodness for AirTags because I could pinpoint in the hotel where the luggage was to allow the staff to find it. - My reservation for the 10 days was split into two different bookings as I was staying in two different rooms due to availability. I checked a few times to confirm that the move from one room to another would be seamless as I would be offsite at the likely time of changing rooms. I was told by someone at the front desk that there was the possibility I would be "homeless" between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm - i.e. the check out time of one reservation and the check-in time of the other. I had to "push back" and indicate that in no uncertain terms was this the right solution; and that I wouldn't have checked into the hotel for the first half of the stay if that had been the case. It ended up being resolved, but between a few issues at the hotel, I probably spent 2 - 3 hours dealing with this stuff. Not relaxing. Bottom line there were some rooms that were beautiful. Almost without except was the staff incredibly friendly. Was the service as good as one would expect of a hotel of this nature? No. Would I stay again? I am not sure. There were some very specific positives for me to stay there (like the pool) that wouldn't translate to most guests.

Hotel's Favorite
It is a treat for us to be in Newport Beach a couple times a year and we have loved returning to the resort the last five years! The service and attention to detail are top notch. Our favorite is to be in a room on the water watching the boats go by and enjoy watching or not all the action on the water no matter what time of day, dusk, nighttime or early morning! Joey greeted us with a smile and was terrific throughout our stay. Collin had helped us with luggage last year, and this time as well. We had a second floor middle over the restaurant, which we thought might be a bummer, and it wasn’t! We enjoyed the live music from our patio with a glass of wine. The housekeeping staff were all familiar to us, especially Lucia, who we love. We didn’t want service this time around, but needed a few things and everyone was great! Great coffee from Blend each morning, the best brunch ever on Sunday morning, dinner at A & O watching sunset, and late afternoon drinks by the pool a couple times all made for a great stay! We’ll be back soon!

The hotel was fine. They did give us a complimentary bottle of champagne for our anniversary and my husband’s 60th bday. This was a nice treat. The biggest disappointment is there isn’t much to see or do at this hotel. There is no beach and a small pool area that is not very nice. Also we tried to go for a walk in the morning but there is no where to walk to. You can go on PCH but it’s high traffic and there is nothing close by. No shops, boutique or cafes are within walking distance. You would need to drive. There is a small bay in front of the hotel that you can see water but there are so many giant boats in front that it blocks the view. And you can’t walk at their bay front because the hotel’s portion of the bay is super small. The pool was a bit depressing. Needs landscaping, greenery and flowers. They had cabanas to rent but they were severely lacking. It had a small rattan sofa, two chairs & a TV in there. The curtains around the cabana was so cheap looking. And the quality of the furniture in the cabanas was awful. I have a community pool in my neighborhood that looks nicer than this place. We were there Labor Day weekend so the hotel’s restaurant was packed. They definitely didn’t have enough servers and those poor people were over worked and exhausted. The first night our female server was so rude. But the second night we got a young man who went out of his way to serve us. I felt bad for him and I know he tried his best to serve our large group. The good thing at this hotel is the people The front desk, housekeeping, valet and most of the restaurant employees were extremely nice, accommodating and worked hard to provide good service. The rooms were pretty nice too. Very clean and housekeeping would come twice a day. But next time, I think I woukd spend the extra money and stay at the Ritz Carlton or Waldorf Astoria in Dana Point. It’s worth the extra money!

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We are happy that our customer service exceeded your expectations, but apologize that the entirety of the stay was not what you expected. Since we are located on Pacific Coast Highway, it can be fairly busy in the surrounding area. Therefore, we do our best to offer shuttles to and from the beach, Fashion Island and other hotspots in the Newport Beach area. Our goal is to provide our guests with exceptional service so we will make sure to pass along your concerns to our management team so that we may improve for the future. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at reservations@balboabayresort.com.

My review is based on Value-Cost vs. experience. This is at best a 1 star value-let me explain, first we are paying an astronomical price for a 1 bedroom suite-we agreed to it, so that is on us, but I am willing to pay up for great service and amenities, this is anything but. Second there are an incredible amount of fees and taxes on top of my astronomical room rate, amounts to about 30% of room rate-occupancy tax, sales tax, resort fees, parking, etc, no other hotel in the area I could find has this level of fees and couldn't find anyone else charging a 10% occupancy tax. Second room is Ok, good view but overlooking club pool that is extremely loud, so making difficult to enjoy our balcony view. Room air conditioning is barely working so it was hot in bedroom and bathroom and hardly any water pressure in shower. Lastly, when we were looking at hotel we saw beach area and pool area that helped justify the astronomical rate we would pay, but got here and we don’t have access, it is members only, so no beach or bay access for us, relegated to pool surrounded by concrete walls. So we accept this is on us as we agreed to pay, but experience and room is worth maybe a third of what we will pay. So it is my opinion there is better value in other nearby hotels. Again, this is a value equation so I would look for better value elsewhere.

We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We apologize that your stay did not meet your value cost vs. experience expectations. Many resorts charge a resort fee and charge for parking in addition to the room or suite rate. Hotel taxes in this area amount to 13.25% which can seem like a lot when you add it to the price of a suite. Although some of our rooms are located on the club side, we do offer similar amenities on the resort side as well as a shuttle to nearby beaches. Our staff normally points that out during the check in process. We hope that you will give us another chance to exceed your expectations if you find yourself in the Newport Beach area again. Please do request the resort side so we can make sure you have a more quiet experience overlooking the water. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you would like to discuss further at reservations@balboabayresort.com.

Had huge expectations for the visit based on reviews but very underwhelmed by the boxy property that lacked warmth, originality, or options to enjoy the bay. Small beachfront area on the bay and that is displayed in advertising was not open to guests as the property doubles as a private club that allows only members to use the beach and pool area. The hotel space seems to be set up for banquets more than an intimate hotel space. Also very high priced for the room and the food.

I stayed here for a few days on business, but it felt like a vacation. From the moment you enter the serene lobby, to the friendly front desk( Natalie), to eating delicious seafood at A & O, to the fun bartenders at the pool bar..you will feel pampered. The excellent service at A&O by Lucias and Didi, and Tara at the bar, is refreshing and great hospitality. Room service for breakfast is great and very quick and the individual business rooms helped me work on the go. Valet( Darren) will kindly take you to the beach and Pier and the Shop by the spa had nice staff and great branded sweatshirts( bought one for my Dad). Overall, the staff and positive vibes of this resort are amazing.

Quick weekend girls trip! We have stayed a number of times at Balboa Bay and never have been disappointed. Valet and Front desk staff were fantastic! It was very busy , but they are a well oiled machine. Room was spacious and very clean! Had lunch at A + O and the food was delicious. Pool has plenty of seating and live music on the weekends. We sat on our patio and listened to the musician. Coffee shop is great for breakfast. It is centrally located to restaurants and shopping. No beach access unless you are a member, but even then I wouldn’t consider that a true beach. It is an easy drive to Newport Beach. Will definitely be back!

Made reservations April 17 for August 5-7 stay. Requested a bay view room and was charged $638.35 for first night nearly three months in advance of stay. As a seasoned traveler I never encountered this procedure before. When reservations were made I was not told or was not aware that AAA and AARP members could have a 10% discount. Only found out about that two days before check in. The hotel web site also does not reveal the outrageous charges for valet, self parking and "resort fees" charged daily. Upon check out I asked the desk agent to apply the AAA or AARP discount to my balance. She, Kimberly said she was not empowered to do that. However, her manager, Natalie was to be in by 9:00 am and Kimberly said she would have Natalie call me to discuss. Well folks, management never called me to discuss. They could care less they just want to charge your card as much as possible. A hotel with such poor management customer service is headed for future problems. If management does not care then eventually neither will the staff. I will also add that the room did not have a bathroom vent or fan. This is something I have never seen in any hotel. The room AC was so loud I needed ear plugs to sleep and for the price it was just a bare bones room. Plus there is no place to even walk to enjoy the bay near the hotel.

We are proud to offer the AAA and AARP discounts when applicable, but regret to inform our guests that it is only available on select days. We apologize for the inconveniences you experienced and would like the opportunity to discuss this further with you.
