Cuyama Buckhorn is commended for its exceptional service and friendly staff, with guests enjoying the comfort and modern amenities of the rooms, even if a few find them on the smaller side and lacking bathtubs. Set in a unique and picturesque location, the hotel's remoteness is both a draw and a point of contention for some. Its cleanliness receives high marks, and the range of amenities, including a pool and sauna, contribute to a communal, relaxing vibe. While the hotel's inviting atmosphere is often praised, a handful of guests question the value due to unexpected fees.

We wanted a quick getaway out of Los Angeles for the 4th of July weekend because our dog is terrified by the fireworks every year. We've never been to New Cuyama before, but the Cuyama Buckhorn seemed like the perfect place to decompress from the city. It's only about 2 hours away and the scenery is incredible.

When we arrived, Keith greeted us outside wearing a mask (thank you!) and checked us in. After parking onsite, he walked us to our unit and briefly gave us a rundown of the place. The room and premise were recently remodeled with modern & stylish fixtures and the room came with complimentary verve coffee pour over kits, filtered water, and tea!

The property features a cozy bonfire in the courtyard that is lit in the evening and each guest is provided with a smores kit! The property also has an upgraded soft water system which leaves your skin feeling soft.

After a comfy sleep (brooklinen, anyone?) , we checked out in the morning but we left our pup's favorite toy, dolly llama. We contacted Keith and asked him to keep an eye out for dolly llama. Today, we got a surprise in the mail. Cuyama Buckhorn had mailed the toy back to us. Seriously amazing.

We discovered Cuyama Buckhorn after camping next door at Blue Sky Center. The property is absolutely stunning. The bar/restaurant/coffee shop is very tastefully executed and the food/beverages are excellent. The staff is incredibly kind and attentive. Everything on the menu can be ordered and delivered pretty much anywhere on the property. The place was not crowded so we felt very well taken care of throughout our entire stay. There is a pool table and bocce ball pit, as well as several books and board games available in the common area. Multiple fire pits and sitting areas, plus a massive communal dining table for large parties or weddings. The rooms are beautifully designed and we even had our own patio facing into a private garden area (deluxe queen). The pool is by far one of the best features. Very large and ultra refreshing (especially when it’s 108 outside). What we really love is how low-key and affordable the Buckhorn is compared to similar establishments like ACE Hotel Palm Springs. Expect a more intimate experience for about 30% cheaper than other comps.

And yes, they do offer pet-friendly rooms for a small fee. We brought our dog Alfie and he had a lovely time roaming around the property making friends. Dogs are not allowed in the pool area, so it’s important that your pet is okay spending time in the room while the adults play.

If you’ve never been to New Cuyama, it’s worth noting that the Buckhorn really is kind of the centerpiece of the area and there isn’t much happening outside of it. Unless you bring something from home, expect to eat the majority of your meals at the restaurant. There is a wine tasting room a short drive up the road called Sagebrush Annie’s that feels like something out of Frontier Land. Absolutely worth checking out for some tasty wine and good storytelling. But if you decide to keep to the property, Cuyama Buckhorn really does offer a one-stop shop experience. Don’t forget to look up at the sky at night! The stars will dazzle you..

Fantastic Inn to get away from the sheer amount of people in Los Angeles. This inn is definitely on my list of places to retreat to when I want a serious escape. The Inn is far enough away from Los Angeles that it becomes much easier to unplug. Cuyama really is focused on giving guests all the tools needed to just BE at a beautiful location (the mountains, lack of ambient light, and sky are on display each night), with a pool, plenty of chairs/tables in the main courtyard, and a welcome Smores kit for those fireside chats.

The room I stayed in over the July 4th weekend was walled off with it's own dense foliage, set of patio chairs and a table, and just such a soothing low noise place to relax during the hot daytime. The room was clean, with a large walk-in shower (multiple shower heads allowed for adults and children and pets if needed), well stocked mini-bar with a small fridge and a ton of southwest ambiance. The room A/C worked fine with easy to suss out room controls and the small tv was just enough to help block out the annoying neighbors who were setting of concussive firecrackers and sparklers. There's a quick-mart two blocks (small ones) over that had whatever I might have needed, but most of all I appreciated the silence on my evening strolls and the feeling of being able to not bump into people at every turn.

I think this is probably one of the best appointed retreats in the Northern LA area and it's location makes it an intentional departure from the hustle of a big city life. It's one I anticipate I'll take advantage of regularly.

I sincerely hope that the Buckhorn figures things out and succeeds because we like the location and the design aesthetic. The bartender, Sam, makes classic and craft cocktails second to none.

We spent over $600 for a room, a snack by the pool, drinks, dinner, and breakfast. The Buckhorn should be providing a legitimate luxury experience and failed. Here is why:

1) The rooms are very small. My companion compared our room to a prison cell.

2) There were flies in the room when we checked in. They should not have been there in the first place and there was no way for us to get rid of them. It is disgusting sleeping in a room knowing that they are swarming around.

3) A gust of wind blew debris into the pool from the adjoining lot and blew over the pool side umbrellas. It felt unsafe and the the pool too dirty to swim afterward. The Buckhorn needs to build a wall to create some wind protection and to put some sandbags on the umbrella stands. The staff needs to learn to use a pool skimmer.

4) The food is abysmal. If the Buckhorn wants people come back, the food needs to be worth the trip. At a minimum, the cook needs to at least be able to do a passable Santa Maria style barbecue. The cook cannot even cook an authentic tri tip. The comments about farm to table produce are totally misleading. The vegetables in my omelet were flavorless and the salad was over dressed.

5) The Buckhorn needs a broader and more interesting selection of local wines. The current approach is unacceptable for a restaurant in the wine country. They only have a few wines to choose from and almost nothing from the vineyards right near them. We asked for a recommendation and was told that it was $36 dollars. After we had started drinking it, the server came back and told us that he made a mistake and that it was $48 dollars. He did not even offer to charge the lower price. It is not appropriate service for a meal at this price point.

An absolutely perfect stay. The staff, food, design and comfort of the hotel is unparalleled. They stay true to the area of Cuyama and help the community while delivering refined and detail oriented rooms. There are well thought out activities at the hotel from dinner and a movie on a picnic blanket under the stars to live music and a BBQ. Cuyama Buckhorn is everything a hotel should be.

I thought I had published this review a long time ago. I am an older person (71) so when I say I was burned out and needed some respite I am not just saying it lightly. I landed in L.A. in the early afternoon, had lunch in Venice with an old friend and started making my way to New Cuyama in the late afternoon. I purposely forgo going up route 5 as I see freeways all the time and they really do nothing for me. I took the scenic route .The scenery was too good to pass up. Arrived at the Cuyama Buckhorn mid evening and the General Manager Keith Hill made me feel right at home. I spent seven wonderful days relaxing, exploring vineyards on the coast (only 60 miles away), dusty canyons with Indian wall paintings, shopping in Bakersfield ( 50 miles in the other direction) or just reading a good book on the beautiful grassy veld separating the rooms. At night the fire pits added warmth to conversations and drinks with properly spaced other guest. Harkins back to a gentler time when guest conversed with one an other as a form of entertainment, knowledge and establishing new friendships. I have posted pictures on You Tube under Cuyama Buckhorn if you'd like to see this. The food was very good, I think I gained ten pounds. From what I understand the new pool is complete and now operational. It wasn't finished when I was there. I am pining for a cocktail in the bar and to sit at a table and picture what the bar was like when Johnny Cash played there in the 60's. Real old California.

Stayed one night and had a great stay. We love the views of the Mountains and the Cuyama Valley, perfect weather. The hotel is really an upscale motel. The room was comfortable with a nice enclosed porch to sit out and have dinner and a drink. Wifi was a bit weak, we couldn't stream Netflix on the TV or our computer, but instead we enjoyed the night sky. The pool is very nice, clean, comfortable. Comfortable chairs to sit around the fire pit.

The grounds have great olive trees with some of the largest olives I have seen growing, very jealous my olives at home aren't as beautiful. Staff was very helpful. Restaurant was closed by 3pm, but they have a fun menu and deliver dinner to your porch if you order before 6pm with them. We loved the vegetarian tacos. The room has a large electric kettle and mini-fridge, min- bar has local produced gin and vodka.

The town doesn't have much in the way of services, the local pizza and falafel cafe closed at 6 and the local super market is a place for locals to get staples, not much produce. We stopped in Taft and luckily brought some fresh fruit and snacks with us. However, the town does have a nice feel and we had a nice run to the local high school and city park is really a nice gem.

It was really just a very relaxed and comfortable place to stay, great get away with open skies and beautiful views. Perfect place to stay and go explore the Southern part of the Carrizo Plains or Norther Los Padres National Forrest during the day, and then soak in the hot tube or pool in the evening at the hotel and watch the stars at night. Will definitely come again.

My boyfriend and I recently took a trip to Cuyama and had never been to the area before. It's truly the perfect place to go if you feel like you want to unplug and spend some quality time with your significant other by the pool, at the bar/restaurant, hiking or playing games outside. The staff is incredible and are always making sure you have what you need. The room feels fresh and not to mention is super cute with a variety of beverages and snacks available for purchase. Would definitely come back again!

We opted to stay at the Buckhorn while attending a family reunion at a property off of Aliso Canyon Rd. rather than risk camping while the weather had been so unpredictable. It is the only hotel between Santa Maria and Maricopa so we bit the bullet and reserved a room. I'm astonished at the number of reviews that rated it as a good value. At $445 a night it was more like price gouging. We did not use any of the amenities; just slept there. We were counting heavily on the "free WiFi" they advertised but it never worked. The desk said words like "rural" and "satellite" and I think they should mention that on their website. They also advertised "in room coffee and tea," but instant coffee and hot water don't really count. They mention dinner and breakfast deliveries but do not include even a continental breakfast with the room price. We had a pet room and were disappointed to find the poop bag dispenser was empty. There were not drawers or dresser for unpacking a suitcase; just a luggage rack and a 15 inch "closet" which was almost entirely taken up by the lovely robes we didn't use. The bed was fine, the linens were fine and the shower was fine.

The Buckhorn is well laid out for work retreats (we were 16 people) with all kinds of facilities, services and opportunities to relax and play (e.g. big pool, bocce ball, hot tub, outdoor movies, fire pits). The location is ideal for keeping a group together because there are no bars or restaurants nearby to draw people away. That said, during the day there are sustainable farms, wineries, horse ranches etc. that offer tours and activities. There are also multiple hikes available and the scenery in the area is beautiful. Service is gracious and professional. It’s located only two hours from LA by car. I think it would be great for friend and family reunions as well. Or just solitary or or couple getaways.

I spent a couple of nights in early November. This place seems oriented to taking it easy, eating at the restaurant, having a drink at the bar and hanging out at the pool. I would like to have investigated hiking locations in the area but my feet were injured so I was unable to explore what was available. Due to Covid, hotel arranged activities were limited/not available when I was there. I enjoyed the grounds and spent my time reading. I hope this helps.
