I really don’t like writing one star reviews. When I do I feel compelled to let someone know not to make the huge mistake I did. For a 1 star review, it has to be a memorable terrible experience. My night at Piety Hill Cottages in December was just that. I was fine with the fact it is all dated. I had assumed everything was functioning which was the wrong decision. The heat could not keep up with the drafty, non insulated cottage with single pane windows. I had the heater cranked up all the way and it was the coldest night I’ve ever spent indoors. I slept in my clothes with all the blankets on the bed. I put a rug behind the significant gap under the front door. One of the windows had a needless air conditioner on the bottom. In the morning, I realized there was a huge gap between window panes. There were so many problems with the place, no wonder I couldn’t get warm. I woke up achy from being all curled up all night. I was miserable.

I am saddened to hear of your experience. We heat, and then I personally check, to make sure that, all 9 cottages are properly warmed before a guest arrives. I have checked all of the heaters and have not been able to duplicate the issue that you describe above. The air conditioners are certainly a needed item, though they are not used much in the winter. Each has a foam insert in the space between the window frames to curb airflow and when I saw this review I check every one of them and found them all to be intact. I do wish you would have contacted the office during your stay so we could have had an opportunity verify and correct any issues that you felt needed addressing. I can't help if I don't know there is a problem.

WOW, WOW! So glad we stumbled across this gem. We were closing on our house and needed a place to stay for an extended amount of time. Not many options out there and not anything remotely affordable...and luck came our way, we found a little piece of paradise, peaceful beautiful and just minutes from groceries, great restaurants and downtown Nevada City. Seriously everything we needed for our extended stay was only minutes away. And thanks to the owners who were amazing, very friendly and super accommodating, turned what could have been grueling waiting period into a fantastic page in our travel journal...thanks again!!

Hi TheFoodiePro, Thanks for the 5 star review. It is always a pleasure to have the ability to provide a safe and quiet environment for folks like yourselves that are in flux due to moving or.....? I hope your new place is all you expect and that you enjoy the life that Nevada County, here in the Sierra Foothills, has to offer. Stop by sometime and let us know how it's going!

Just love this place. Charming old miner cottages around lovely quiet grounds make you feel you've stepped back into time. Sharon is a character, with a funny dry sense of humor that is pure Nevada City. Her attention to detail might be off-putting to some, but the result is the cleanest room I have ever stayed in. It was thoughtfully arranged with everything you need. The bed and bedding were perfect. She was very accommodating to a couple of personal issues. It was a wonderful experience.

We stayed at Piety Hill while atending the WIld and Scenic film festival in Nevada City. They are well-located a fairly short walk from downtown, although the walk does seem to manage to be uphill both ways. ;} We found the cottages to have a rustic charm, with interesting, period furnishings. Fairly small, but attractive. Are they modern and cookie cutter and up to date? Absolutely not. Do they have a real appeal, with plenty of atmosphere? You bet. The bed could be more comfortable, but my back is a little finicky. Since we knew we were heading into town each day, we did not purchase the breakfast option, which was not inexpensive, around $20 I think. Now, about the odd attitude. When we checked in, the owner pretty much read us the riot act about the various behaviors that were not permitted on the premises. This including "bringing home strays" (i.e., picking someone up in town to bring back and party with). I am 63, my wife is 60, and although we are in good shape I am sad to say we more or less look our age. At least I do. We absolutely do not look like the kind of people who would be inclined to bring some rabble from town back to raise a ruckus, so I have no idea why we needed to be lectured about that. I was mostly amused; my wife was offended. Maybe there had recently been an issue, I don't know. I do;t remember them all, but there were a few other sins on the "Thou shalt not" list that I really dont think we would have been prime suspects for committing. Kind of gave us a bad feeling, and made us feel like these were perhaps some really uptight folks.

Dear Steve, Thank you for your review; it is always appreciated as a way to improve ourselves. We do have policies and procedures and with online, third party bookings we have to review them when new guests at check in. Since you have to sign for them, I often go over them and I try to be humerus in the process because I understand it can be arduous. One of the policies is the number of people in the cottage; I was indeed Joking when I mentioned not picking up "strays" in town. I was being light of humor ;). I'm sorry it didn't come off well and I apologize to your wife, as I had no intention to offend her. Please accept my apology. Town is downhill there and uphill back, but it all feels uphill! We do offer breakfast ~ Our continental breakfast is $7.50 and our full hot breakfast is $12.50, delivered to your cottage at your selected time. I hope you come back. I would like to correct the mistake and make you feel right at home. Sharon Mills, Manager

This was a short notice trip to the Gold Country in the Sierra foothills of CA. We had never been up there, so lodging was a question mark. I found Piety Hill on the web & as soon as I called the place, I knew that we had found a great location. It's a collection of ORIGINAL 1933 cottages meticulously restored on a beautifully landscaped property only a half mile from the historic downtown (easily walkable). It's like walking into a time machine to experience a lost piece of America in each of the uniquely themed cottages. Yet, each one has all the modern conveniences that you would expect...AC, cable TV, kitchens, even garages -- just great! The owners are super-friendly & can offer info on most local topics and the price is VERY reasonable for what you get...much better than a boring high priced chain. We are going back in September and we wouldn't even THINK about staying anyplace else!!
