Given some earlier negative reviews, the Pelican must have undergone a complete renovation recently.

Our rooms were not only spotlessly clean, but full of small elegant details showing great concern for guests.

Check-in was laboriously slow, and rooms towards the front will have some road noise, but the Pelican offers excellent value in an expensive town, and is far better than the standard roadside motel.

Recommended.

Room was clean and quiet. No coffeemaker but there is microwave and refrigerator. Local calls were free on the room phone but had to make a few attempts on the phone before the phone call went through. Also when using the phone to talk to a friend in another room, there was static on the line. Bed was good. The young man at the front desk was helpful.

We stopped here on our road trip up the coast of Northern California. It was a pleasant surprise that the hotel is in a central location, with private parking and the room we were given was a large one. Travelling for a few days we had experienced small accommodations. The room was large, with a king bed and a big bathroom. Central Monterey is a 5 minute drive.

Stayed one night. I did not ask for one, but was given a non-compliant ADA room. The shower had one pressure/flow setting, hard. The shower head shot needles of water that actually stung ones skin. The provided shampoo and body wash were reminiscent of Pine-sol (from wall mounted dispensers, not standard hotel bottles). The bathroom had no towel bars or hooks. Towels were hung on the grab bars by the toilet (not optimal or necessarily sanitary). The room it self was spartan, only one nightstand had a lamp. Fixtures were dusty. A/C-Heater was filthy. A dirty pillowcase was discarded in one corner. Floor needed moping. Vinyl plank flooring, so no sound dampening carpet in the rooms. Every step from the family upstairs echoed through our room). The bed was not comfortable (too hard) and pillows were very small (3/4 standard size) on a king sized bed. Very cheap bedclothes. No breakfast of any kind, no water in the room, no real appropriate amenities for the price. Basically a dingy $45 room for $250.

We love Monterey and we love staying at the Pelican Inn on Cass and Munras. This is our fourth time staying at the Pelican Inn. The rates are very reasonable. Room has every amenity of a 5 Star Hotel. Rooms are very clean. Hotel managers are nice. Check-in during Covid 19 was a no contact process. Rang a bell and the manager appeared behind a plexiglass window.
Credit card and Driver's License went through a small opening in the window. Returned after my signature on a paper confirming the price. The price was $3 lower than quoted by some agent on Reservation.com. we love the location as we can walk into downtown Monterey and only 1/2 mile.
Going south; there's the Del Monte Mall and has all nice shops including Macy's and Whole Foods. If a person doesn't want to walk, the MST Monterey-Salinas-Transit is available. Also, the manager is a Ride Share i.e. UBER, LYFT Driver. We are looking forward to a return visit.

I've stayed here before, this time was a four night stay. Pelican Inn is a good value for what it is, a budget establishment. The staff has always been great, rooms clean and quiet, no issues with anything I used. Two things that stand out for me: location & fireplace. It's a central location with an easy drive to pretty much everything. And I always opt for the fireplace, even though it's a few dollars more. This stay I did have a conversation with the desk because they wanted to charge me starting with the 3rd fireplace log, but it was resolved to my satisfaction. I understand things have been tough with covid, but I was still paying extra for the room with a fireplace. Also, because of covid no daily housekeeping or continental breakfast, understandable. They have been doing updating here and there, like the TV looked fairly new. Perhaps they can replace the room chairs and microwave soon, both a little worn. Because the rooms are small it's better suited to couples or solo travelers, the only amenity is a small picnic area- no pool or playground. But all things considered I still think Pelican Inn represents one of the best values for staying in the area.

When I was on the hunt for a rental house, I ended up staying here for 11 days. It was a great choice! I felt like I got my money’s worth, and I was treated like a valued guest. Plus, it was the perfect place to relax during a hectic time. That’s priceless! Just what I needed.

I passed by this Inn almost every day because my mom lives at the assisted living facility next door. I’d see the parking lot full in the evening and during the day, the managers and staff would be hard at work, cleaning and maintaining the charming accommodations and beautiful flowers. Little did I know that I’d need their help when the rental house nearby was sold and I had to move out.

I had a many options for places close to Old Monterey along the main drag, but I chose this Inn because of the combination of cost, proximity, and convenience. I ended up extending my stay from the initial 4 days to 11. I loved that there were plenty of places to walk to, like the Old Town Monterey or the open-aired Del Monte center (Westfield Mall) with its shops (Apple, LuLuLemon, Columbia, Pottery Barn, and thankfully a LensCrafters).

Restaurants at the Mall and nearby to walk include (CPK, Kona, Island Burger, Chipotle, LaLa’s, Starbucks, Dametra - a quick version of Carmel’s top Dametra Cafe). There’s also Whole Foods and just up the street, my favorite, Chopsticks (Vietnamese). And a nearby TJs.

I almost forgot to mention the TWO walkable farmers markets - Tuesday (old town) and Friday morning (across street at the Mall). The Tuesday afternoon to evening all year long farmers market is almost street fair-like as the Main Street lined with restaurants and such is closed to cars with normal FM stuff from the nearby fields of Monterey County, local artisans, and ... yum yum ... street food and more. The Friday one is seasonable - but given that this is where our food is grown, there is always something in season! Get there early.

To sum up ... I'll know I'll stay here again and will recommend this to my fellow value or budget minded friends and travelers. It is a small Inn with less than 20 rooms split between two levels. Parking was tight but there always was a space available. The staff was attentive and pleasant. Oh, and the ice machine was working (unlike some nearby places) and the rooms just a few steps from your car. Also, attractions Historic Old Town with its incredible history of being Capital of Alta California and the wonderful Monterey Bay Aquarium.

This was our 3rd time to stay at the Pelican Inn.
It's a short walk into downtown Monterey. Farmers Market is on Tuesdays on Alvarado Street. Air Conditioner did not work automatically. Hotel manager said we had to dial it on as needed. TV volume was too low and had to have the Hotel Manager come to our room and adjust it. He said it was on low volume because teenagers have it too loud. It was never loud enough. Wifi is good. The Housekeeper knocked on our door before 9 AM both days and check out is not until 11 AM. Shampoo Dispenser in shower took a long time to get liquid to wash my hair. I bring my own soap. If we return, I will bring my own shampoo. The price is always reasonable so we do not expect fancy amenities. The refrigerator, microwave and hair dryer all worked well.

This hotel was everything I needed and expected. I was here with my mom to celebrate her 80th birthday, and this hotel suited us perfectly. It is an older property but has been well maintained and is very clean. Rooms are not large or fancy, but they have a microwave and a fridge, both of which work just fine. Just a note that there is no coffee maker in the room, but there is a Starbucks just up the street. The beds and pillows were comfy and all the linens were clean and in good condition. It is very conveniently located, a ten minute walk down to the piers/beach. I sincerely appreciate the hard work they are doing to keep costs down. It was so nice to find a clean and comfortable hotel I could afford in such a great location. It is an independent hotel, not a chain, and I am always happy to support a small business. I would absolutely stay here again.
