Needing a last minute reservation for a business trip during a busy summer season, I'm pretty sure I looked online at every hotel in Monterey. I was hoping for a clean, quiet space close to my worksite where my husband and daughter could also vacation... at a reasonable price. The online reviews for places all over town made that seem like an impossible request. I took a 'sight unseen' chance on the El Castell, and they delivered on and exceeded those expectations.

The rooms are simple (few frills), but meticulously clean. The bed was comfortable, the AC/TV/mini fridge worked well, and the bathroom was updated with fairly spacious storage/hair dryer/high quality, full size toiletries (soap, shampoo, lotion, etc.) Due to COVID, housekeeping was only by request; but the staff responded quickly and cheerfully to refresh towels or meet any other needs we had. I didn't get to visit the covered pool or breakfast/vending machine area, but my 10 year old gave it five stars (husband agrees).

Parking is free. The small lot was packed, especially at night, because the inn itself was at capacity - but we never failed to get a spot somewhere and you're never more than 50 yards away from your car. El Castell is conveniently located off a major street just 5 minutes from downtown (where I was working), but away from the traffic and tourist hustle and bustle. Speaking of that, I'd read a lot in reviews of all these places across Monterey about night noise and disturbances; but in a particularly busy and boisterous week downtown, we had no problems at all just a few miles away.

The El Castell is a charming, throwback style inn. It's not a spa or a luxury hotel, and it's not trying to be. If that's what you're seeking, you'll pay 3 to 4 times the nightly rate for it (or more). Above all, it's a family business owned by friendly, hardworking people who take pride in serving their guests well. I would absolutely stay there again and wholeheartedly recommend it to others.

We stayed here for one night over the weekend and while the motel was full, the experience was quite and uneventful. The rooms are very small for two people, so I would keep that in mind. But the rooms are hardwood floors with very nice upkeep of paint and trim on walls. There is a small closet with iron and a table and three drawer dresser in the room along with two night stands and a sofa chair. The bed is soft and comfortable and there is a lighted mirror above the sink and a full body mirror adjacent to the sink. The counter space around the sink is small and crowded, especially if one normally has a lot of accessories to lay out. The bathroom has no outside window, so ventilation is via the exhaust fan only, which is not very strong. The shower/tub is nice and clean with no chips or faded chalking. The grounds are spread out in a rectangular design around the indoor heated pool (no spa). Overall, this is a nice place to stay without breaking your budget. It's pricey for a standard motel, but it's cheap compared to the high cost of the name brand hotels in the area.

We had a great stay the rooms were updated pretty nicely the only two negatives was I wish there was a small table instead of a desk and I need better ventilation in the room there was a lot of rust and spots of mold forming above shower granite and above the sink granite... All in all the rooms were super clean love the hardwood and did not get to use it but look like an indoor pool.... Location was great dollar store, Denny's and a gas station all right next to the motel.... Also lady at front desk was super friendly and helpful.

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by how clean/comfortable and well cared for this property and room were. We took our first post-COVID trip and stayed here and felt completely safe and comfortable doing so. The front desk staff was really friendly from the get-go and very accommodating as well. Everything in the room worked just as it should and it was really quiet at night. The wifi was also free, fast and reliable. The pool area was well kept and very inviting. This location is very walkable, closeby to a nice coffee shop and CVS. We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the area.

This ticked most of my boxes. We paid $55 for a king suit (February, so off season). The room was clean and very modern. Had a fridge, microwave, coffee maker, even the blow dryer worked. Had an iron and ironing bored and extra blankets and pillow too. Had shampoo, conditioner, soap. Everything was stocked and funtional. The heater/AC worked great and was connected to a thermostat, it was kind of nosy and woke me up a couple of times but worked great. The kids enjoyed the pool. I had added a note about getting extra towels for the pool and they were given to me when I checked in. It should be noted that while the photos makes it appear to be an indoor pool, the area is actually covered and has 3 walls but the 4th side opens to a sort of atrium. Pool was "warmish". Enough for the kids, not enough for me to want to jump in though. The only issue I ran in to was getting ice. The pool is open from 9-9 and the ice machine is next door in a connected building. I couldn't get in at 8am when I wanted to get some ice to throw in our ice chest. Went to the front desk and the lady there was in the back chatting on her cell. Rang the bell and she came, put her finger to her lips and then walked back and finished her conversation on the phone. Wasn't too long until I was helped but it was quite obvious that it was a personal call. The lady at the desk when I dropped my key was very nice and helpful as was the one who checked me in the night before. A couple of place to eat within walking distance.

The El Casteel is a good value. It is kept up well. It is mainly a motor court one story motel with a few rooms in the back that are 2 story. We stayed in room 203 which was on the bottom floor with a room above us. We could constantly hear loud footsteps from the floor above us. So you might want to make sure you are in the one story area or get a 2nd story room. There is no elevator. Secondly, the amenities listing claims that there is a free breakfast. At least during our stay this was not true. There is a swimming pool, but no hot tub. There is an ice machine and a filtered water machine for customer use. There is WIFI Internet, but it is open wifi with no password, so I would not recommend it be used for any financial transactions unless you have your own VPN. Our room was nice. We had two queen beds. The refrigerator was excellent with a separate freezer compartment. There is a Denny's Restaurant across the street. There is a Safeway grocery store about one mile away. It is located close and convenient to Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf. We would stay here again. I don't know if this is common to the Monterey area, but we were charged $40 a day for taxes and fees on top of the cost of our room. So be aware that out the door, the hotel will be much more than the asking price. We have stayed all over the country and the taxes are generally around $20 a day, not $40. We love the history and the marine life you can be around in the Monterey area.

They advertise this as "boutique style lodging" - what a joke! The location is very unattractive, the beds are uncomfortable, and the TV turns off at 10pm (never experienced that before). But the worst thing was the thick layer of dust on top of the refrigerator and the coffee maker. I booked it wanting a motel with no indoor hallways due to COVID, but how COVID compliant can they be if a high-touch surface like the top of the short refrigerator (on which the microwave sits) is dusty??? Certainly the price is right, but I wish I had spent more time looking for other motel alternatives in the area. Also, while loading up to leave, a groundskeeper was walking around without a mask.

Very nice motel at a reasonable distance from Cannery Road at a good price.
Really enjoyed the super clean room with modern decoration and little details as a great number of plugs to recharge phone, pc and camera of two people.
Checkin and checkout efficient, professional in a nice atmosphere.
Definitely recommended !!!

We have stayed in the Monterey area at least 14 times over the years. For Motel category this motel is the absolute best!
From the moment you drive into the courtyard you can tell the care that is taken. Lovely Hydrangeas and clean well-swept driveways welcome you. Everything, absolutely everything is well kept and immaculate. It’s CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN.
Looks brand new. Lovely tiled roofs on the buildings, freshly painted exteriors and the beautiful smell of hydrangeas are just the beginning. As for the rooms, they match the exterior as far as upkeep. Freshly painted walls, sparkling clean floors, bathroom and furnishings. Comfortable beds and bedding, plenty of towels, refrigerator, microwave, Kuerig coffee setup, and wonder of wonders, Free WiFi. They have provided everything to make you comfortable and happy. And we are. We plan to always stay here when we return to Monterey.

This motel is priced at great value and is very clean. The kids had fun playing in the bathtub too! There's a sheltered heated pool too which we didnt get to use. Check in and check out was very easy and fuss free. We stayed 2 nights so that we could get a full day at Monterey Bay Aquarium for the kids. There's also a microwave and decent sized fridge in the room, so you can buy frozen meals to store and heat up if you want to save on money. Will be back to stay in this motel if we ever come back!
