The hotel itself has probably been nice some time ago, but now it mostly looks run-down and would need a renovation, especially the rooms! The walls were so thin that we could hear 3-4 couples "having fun" like they were in our room... I am SO glad that we only spent one night there... In the morning we were supposed to have breakfast included, but what they called breakfast was coffee and an oatbar.... no comments needed. Would not recommend this hotel even for one night, even though the location is good, it's not worth the money.
My husband and I have been staying at this hotel every year for 17 years. In the beginning, it was awesome and still pretty much is. It is in a great location, in great condition for a historical landmark, they HAD a great breakfast and employees would even remember us. Why would we Not continue the tradition? They even built the other side with a elevator when we used we used to have to walk up many flights of stairs. Well, over the years customer service has decreased and the prices keep going up. After this year though, and looking at some of these reviews, I think they are working on it. I really miss the breakfast. I would also like some help with parking a large vehicle because I got another parking ticket this year. But all these bad reviews because it old? Really? When you stay here, realize that you are staying at a historic hotel that is over 100 years old and appreciate it. It really is a beautiful hotel.…
We took our grandson to the aquarium for his 9th birthday and thought this downtown location would be good It was! We’d planned to walk to a dinner on the wharf but it was the Warrior’s championship night so we did takeout from a decent burger joint across the street and a wine bar next door…ate in the room and watched the W The unadvertised breakfast buffet was de minimis but we enjoyed the bagel shop nearby and Peet’s coffee a short hop away before we went to the aquarium. Why we like downtown locations! Beds were comfy; bathroom clean & everything in order. Our room had good ventilation and it was pretty quiet Nothing fancy but the staff was friendly & helpful. Downside was only that both the TV and WiFi were a bit glitchy/slow, and that the registration/login pages were also clunky We had free overnight and AM parking just a bit away. I expect we’ll plan on it for our next visit when we don’t have to race thru exhibits at 9yo speed…
So when I booked the room a week later then our stay. Josh at the front desk was so awesome to work with. He helped me with getting me a room I needed for the one night stay. I was also able to cancel my incorrect booking. He was a consummate professional and his manner and great training was showing in his customer service. I will now be calling and booking directly with the hotel on all of our future visits to our daughter at Cal State Monterey Bay. Room was nice for needs. I give the hotel 4
We just spent the weekend here and the best thing is the location. Great restaurant's within steps of the hotel and just a 5 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf and a great promenade walk along the ocean that go's forever passing Cannery Row and places to stop for breakfast or just coffee. The hotel was built in 1904 and had great antiques but if we stayed there again, we'd request to be in the new building, the one you see the photo's of more modern furnishings. The older part is old and our bed was awful but we saw that they were replacing all the mattresses wishing they'd replace ours. I think we'd stay there again, but in the new building.
Had a great stay @ Monterey hotel for Big sur marathon. Very close to expo activities, near great restaurants and down town activities. Had very early am day of race and they had coffee and goodies ready. Great place to just relax after hard race. Very nice people. Would definitely stay again.
The only good thing about this hotel is the location. The layout of the hotel is horrible. You can enter the hotel on either side of the hotel but there’s no one around to help bring in your bags. And if you unload in the loading zone, then you can’t get down to the middle of the hotel to the front desk because there are stairs. My room was clean but I could hear the person above me talking and plus my window was open and there was no screen. Overall, just not a place I would go back to.
The hotel is in a good area and it is very clean. Just very dated. Everything squeaks - the bed, the floors. You hear the people above you. The staff was nice and helpful. It’s close to the Fisherman’s Wharf and also to 17 mile drive. I probably wouldn’t stay here again but the price was much better for our one night stay.
A historic property that could benefit from some minor renovations. But despite the wear and tear it is a charming property at a great location with warm and very friendly staff. The manager, Joshua was extremely professional and I left very impressed.
Pros: friendly staff and excellent location. Bed was very comfy Cons: ZERO soundproofing in the guest rooms. You can hear everything on the street (could literally hear word for word conversations even with windows closed), and the same goes for the other rooms. And the hotel is on a BUSY street. Literally did not sleep a wink for the two nights I was there. TV was from the 80’s and the remote didn’t even work. Hair dryer plug was cracked and wouldn’t work. The plumbing is strange so when the people in the room next door (or above, I couldn’t tell) took a shower it literally sounded like a freight train was coming through. The Wi-Fi also didn’t work well and would go in and out consistently. Note to management - either replace your windows with newer, thicker panes or maybe provide ear plugs for your guests. Modernizing the limited amenities would also go a long way.…
