This place must have been something back in the day, you can tell it was once a beautiful destination. But, the years have not been kind to Hill House Inn, and it is in a sad state. First issue, upon arrival we found out that they no longer have cable and are in the process of getting a new carrier, so, no TV. To be fair they do state that in the confirmation e-mail, but we somehow missed it. Refrigerators are not provided in the rooms, but my husband is an insulin dependent diabetic so we had to have a refrigerator. We were able to purchase one for $20.00. The restaurant and bar are no longer open which was disappointing. From the outside to the inside, everything is so run down. It was warm and we wanted to open the windows, but they have no screens on them, and unfortunately our ocean view king room was one of the rooms that had no balcony. We finally decided to open the windows and risk letting the flies in so we could cool off for a bit. We were told that it was under new management, I can only hope that the new people restore it to it's former glory, or at least update everything. When that happens, we will be back, but not while it's still in it's current condition, not at the price we paid. The saving grace were the ladies cleaning the room on our floor, they were very friendly and helpful during out stay! Also the man who brought us our refrigerator was very nice. We hope to try a stay here again one day when the upgrades are made.

I picked this place for a little getaway. Location was perfect for my needs. Curteous staff. But that was the highlight. The rooms are stale and musty. And the decor just old. Now, I like old if it's done right, makes character. This was not it. Has potential if it was cared for. The rooms has old bathroom cheap fixtures with water stains and build up. The plastic shower curtains looked as old as me. There was no air, which is fine because of the location, but no screens? We had to leave window open to air out but no screens on the window. This place has potential to be adorable. My suggestion is wait until new owners renovated. It needs it.

Oh boy! It was a run down old ancient hotel that looked like it used to be a pretty nice place. They used to make movies there , like “murder she wrote! “ There were pictures of many actors who stayed there many years ago .There was an old scary looking restaurant that is now closed . At night, it looked like it was from “the shining “. The bed was ok hard . It was warm and there was no air , and we couldn’t open patio door because there were no screens. The curtains looked ok but the Lacey sheers under were all ripped up. There was a nice view from back of building of the ocean bluffs as we were on a hill. We luckily had internet ,but then there was no tv service. The towels were new and bedding seemed clean! There was a huge ceiling spider and my daughter took care of him ,. I thought there may be more so I had trouble falling asleep. The lobby had delicious kerig coffee and tea. The workers were extremely cordial. Downtown a short five minute walk , and there were coffee shops , restaurants and stores.

These people can put you in a bad mood in a hurry. After calling to confirm my reservation a week ago, there was no record of it when I arrived. The admittedly new employee at the desk had no help at 5pm. She refused to call Dena who had personally confirmed my reservation last week. But she said she could get me a room. But she wanted to help the person who came in 15 minutes after I had arrived before me because she had a reservation and I did not. I did not agree to that. It still took me 30 minutes to get a room. And I showed her my reservation and confirmation number in an email from the property. I told her multiple times that my reservation was for two beds in the room and a sea view. On the way taking me to the room which was on the ground floor I asked if it had a sea view. Her response was that we would see when we got there. After 30 minutes of her idiocy, I just accepted the room with no sea view (has view of parking lot and fence). Vacations are supposed to be pleasurable events and she sure quashed that in a hurry. And BTW, there is hardly anyone staying here so sea view rooms were definitely available. I’ll leave it at that. DON’T STAY HERE.

This property has simply been neglected for far too long, and oh what a shame! Everything about this hotel is tired. The Covid excuse is no longer working, and it's time for the "new" owners to finally step in and up their game. It's too bad they didn't use the "downtime" when Covid was at it's peak. That would have been the perfect time to completely shut down and complete the overhaul. Additionally, everyone who is traveling these days understands that finding top notch personnel is especially tough, but I'm sure you can do much better. Your current staff operates on excuses instead of trying to improve & enhance the customer experience. They could care less if your current customers ever came back, let alone recommend your property to future guests. Maybe hire a mystery shopper and see what they say about your staff. All's we ask is that you take a walk around the property with fresh eyes and actually go into each room and ask yourself if what you see is acceptable. I think not. Yes - - - the necessary improvements will be costly, but given your location, the lovely town of Mendocino and the charming surrounding area, you really can't lose if you just start renovating now!! If you re-open your dining room and offer not only breakfast to your overnight guests, but lunch and/or dinner to potential diners staying elsewhere, you could possibly recoup some of your renovation investment. Just be sure to hire a good chef! You claim "ocean views," but the views are almost entirely blocked by overgrown trees & plants. Try trimming your back trees, and you could solve some of the problem. All of the outside staircases are rusty and in need of new flooring. They don't even feel structurally sound. And the guest rooms . . . you could definitely do a better job describing the different types of rooms that are available to reserve. People will pay more for defined sitting areas, balconies, patios, etc ... but one never really knows what type of room they're actually going to get. In regard to the renovations needed, basically everything in the guest rooms need to be replaced, it's beyond a simple refresh. Start with your lobby and hopefully guests will decide to return. One suggestion is to announce renovations are starting and then post your "progress" on social media & booking sites. Discerning travelers do read reviews & comments and any updates you provide will be greatly appreciated and definitely of interest! Good luck!

Clean, well kept. Nice staff located within walking distance of downtown. Great value at the top of a small hill overlooking Mendocino close to the ocean and Mendocino Headlands State Park. Consider Hill House Inn on your next trip to Mendocino.

We stayed here 7 years ago and this place has gone down hill since then. Wallpaper coming off the walls, a broken slider door to the patio, cracked tile in the bathroom, a crack in the television screen??? and the overall feeling like your in the tenderloin not Mendocino. There was a drunk guy one night that was somehow able to open our door and come in our room while we were in bed. I thought he was there to replace the TV but apparently he was drunk and had the wrong room. He had also dropped pizza all over the stairs leading up to the second floor and left corona cans on the stairs and by our door. The Pizza and beer cans remained there during our stay and nobody bothered to clean it up. We were told that there was no trash service because of COVID and we had to take care of the trash ourselves. We were told that the TV would get replaced but it never did. We were also promised an ocean view but they have neglected to trim the bushes around the property so you can’t see the ocean from the rooms any longer. Don’t waste your time. When we tried to address some of these things upon checkout the clerk was rude and unapologetic.

We booked an ocean view king, 2nd Floor. On check-in No kings on 2nd floor North building. Do not pay for a first floor Oceanview. The term applies to approximately 5% of the total West view. The balance is a fence or the tree line. Other occupants remove the chairs to your room, the room itself was ok. Not what we paid for.

I stayed in the Hillhouse more than 20 times ...I love 💘 the garden and it's Victorian l architecture is absolutely beautiful...the Rioms maybe outdated a little but the rooms are big and very clean ...the personal is doing a fine job with one exception...which is the dayshift front desk employee..by the name of "kathi" .she is the rudest unkindest and most hostel employee I experienced in a hotel in my intire life ..she harassing people incl.myselfjust walking through the garden ...smoking a cigarette ...being AR least 20 feet away from any room ...respecting other guest preferences. Her poor performance as a employee from the hillhouse ruin the Hillhouse reputation and my stay ..not the first time ...and I wonder why somebody would hire this woman which has not even the courtesy of a simple hello or any kind of greeting ..matter fact ...being just unkind even hostel .I work in a hotel myself working the front desk myself ...feeling ashamed a woman like " Kathi" giving such a disgrace yo the same Job ..I have . I pay for that unacceptable behavior money to feel uncomfortable and unwelcome ...thats just very wrong . The Hillhouse management and the Hillhouse owners hopefully won't disregard my review and choose employees more careful and people who know what customer service is all about specially in a hotel . I wrote a handwritten 2 pages complain this morning as well ...hoping if I decide to ever pay for a room at the Hillhouse again..I won't waste my money again ...cause she literally ruin our dtay not the first time .

Upon arrival we were treated very poorly by innkeeper Levi at front desk. We noticed a dirty car parked out front with a tired dog tied to the side mirror owned by the innkeepers. We kindly asked Levi the Innkeeper for an extra blanket and were promptly yelled at for not wearing our masks. There must be a really strong adhesive connecting Levi's behind to the front desk bar chair because he rolled his eyes upon a request and refused to show us where the ice machine was. He needs some re-training in hospitality and all around inn-keeping etiquette. We had to clean our own rooms and after meeting a really nice Maintenance personnel by the name of Peto who offered to wash our sandy clothes and loan us a vacuum cleaner we were delighted and made sure we tipped this gentleman. We were really disappointed in the curb appeal, gardens and overall exterior condition. Our neighbor let his dog pee near the front entrance of our room and we had to clean this as well. Would definitely not recommend this place. Maybe have Levi work under Peto, there is a lot He can teach this innkeeper.
