Liked - The location of the Hill House Inn is excellent. Although we drove because of the cooler weather, the town is just a couple of blocks away from the Hotel as well as easy to get to from the main road - HW 1

Disliked · This hotel needs a lot of TLC. I guess that at one time it was used for an episode of "Murder She Wrote" which ended in 1996, and I can see why, but it looks like it hasn't had much updating since then. Now, I want to acknowledge that we are in a COVID-19 Season and they are probably not getting the kind of usual crowd, so money is likely tight but simple things like gardening, repairing broken bricks and siding, etc., would go a long way. Also, the sink in our room needed to be changed.
Having said that, the value for the room, based on the costs of other places in Mendocino, was reasonable. I just wish they would "Fix it Up" a little as it would go a long way...

Clean, well kept. Nice staff located within walking distance of downtown. Great value at the top of a small hill overlooking Mendocino close to the ocean and Mendocino Headlands State Park. Consider Hill House Inn on your next trip to Mendocino.

This place is just tired. It was once a very nice place but it is not being maintained to a normal standard for this kind of property. Peeling paint and unkept gardens are the norm here. I guess that is why it’s cheaper than most places in the area. If you don’t mind seeing threadbare drapes and nicked up woodwork the place is ok. The important stuff seems to work and it’s clean.

We stayed here 7 years ago and this place has gone down hill since then. Wallpaper coming off the walls, a broken slider door to the patio, cracked tile in the bathroom, a crack in the television screen??? and the overall feeling like your in the tenderloin not Mendocino.

There was a drunk guy one night that was somehow able to open our door and come in our room while we were in bed. I thought he was there to replace the TV but apparently he was drunk and had the wrong room. He had also dropped pizza all over the stairs leading up to the second floor and left corona cans on the stairs and by our door. The Pizza and beer cans remained there during our stay and nobody bothered to clean it up.

We were told that there was no trash service because of COVID and we had to take care of the trash ourselves.

We were told that the TV would get replaced but it never did.

We were also promised an ocean view but they have neglected to trim the bushes around the property so you can’t see the ocean from the rooms any longer. Don’t waste your time.

When we tried to address some of these things upon checkout the clerk was rude and unapologetic.

These people can put you in a bad mood in a hurry. After calling to confirm my reservation a week ago, there was no record of it when I arrived. The admittedly new employee at the desk had no help at 5pm. She refused to call Dena who had personally confirmed my reservation last week. But she said she could get me a room. But she wanted to help the person who came in 15 minutes after I had arrived before me because she had a reservation and I did not. I did not agree to that. It still took me 30 minutes to get a room. And I showed her my reservation and confirmation number in an email from the property.
I told her multiple times that my reservation was for two beds in the room and a sea view. On the way taking me to the room which was on the ground floor I asked if it had a sea view. Her response was that we would see when we got there. After 30 minutes of her idiocy, I just accepted the room with no sea view (has view of parking lot and fence). Vacations are supposed to be pleasurable events and she sure quashed that in a hurry. And BTW, there is hardly anyone staying here so sea view rooms were definitely available.
I’ll leave it at that. DON’T STAY HERE.

Well...
Old, curtains were frayed, thick sticky grime on the chair, and side tables. Carpeting looks like it came from a Vegas Casino. Small TV, Balcony railings needed cleaning. But the shower was good and the water was hot. No microwave, Refrigerator, minimum of pillows, and outlets. Whole place needs an upgrade.

This place must have been something back in the day, you can tell it was once a beautiful destination. But, the years have not been kind to Hill House Inn, and it is in a sad state. First issue, upon arrival we found out that they no longer have cable and are in the process of getting a new carrier, so, no TV. To be fair they do state that in the confirmation e-mail, but we somehow missed it. Refrigerators are not provided in the rooms, but my husband is an insulin dependent diabetic so we had to have a refrigerator. We were able to purchase one for $20.00. The restaurant and bar are no longer open which was disappointing. From the outside to the inside, everything is so run down. It was warm and we wanted to open the windows, but they have no screens on them, and unfortunately our ocean view king room was one of the rooms that had no balcony. We finally decided to open the windows and risk letting the flies in so we could cool off for a bit. We were told that it was under new management, I can only hope that the new people restore it to it's former glory, or at least update everything. When that happens, we will be back, but not while it's still in it's current condition, not at the price we paid. The saving grace were the ladies cleaning the room on our floor, they were very friendly and helpful during out stay! Also the man who brought us our refrigerator was very nice. We hope to try a stay here again one day when the upgrades are made.

Upon arriving and leaving the front desk personal had no personality. We had a ocean view room for 2 nights that had a partial view of the ocean. Unfortunately the sliding glass door was filthy which ruined the view. The bathroom mirror was not clean and there was hair on the walls behind the door. After arriving back to our room the next afternoon the beds were not made up but the coffee and cups were replaced.

Like the other reviews, it’s sad what this property has become. Peeling paint, no updating since the 70’s including the towels which are thin and gray. Parking lot stripes long faded. Hotel Tonight said there were only 2 rooms remaining. Lol. The place was near empty.

I picked this place for a little getaway. Location was perfect for my needs. Curteous staff. But that was the highlight. The rooms are stale and musty. And the decor just old. Now, I like old if it's done right, makes character. This was not it. Has potential if it was cared for. The rooms has old bathroom cheap fixtures with water stains and build up. The plastic shower curtains looked as old as me. There was no air, which is fine because of the location, but no screens? We had to leave window open to air out but no screens on the window.
This place has potential to be adorable. My suggestion is wait until new owners renovated. It needs it.
