This is about what you'd expect from a Holiday Inn Express - fairly typical room. Staff at checkin and breakfast was great. Although this location is kind of in the middle of nowhere, it is a decent base for exploring the Redwoods. As an IHG platinum I'm pretty sure they gave me a room upgrade (upper floor corner room that was very large). I'd stay here again if I was in the area.

Stopped by late at night. Of all the stays on this trip, this hotel was the standout on COVID-19 safety protocols - most places that we have visited were doing a good job, this place was just a step above. Remodeled rooms and friendly staff rounded out the experience. Served a "grab and go" breakfast in a bag, as the typical buffet is out - a great way to adapt to the situation and provide outstanding guest service. Just north of Eureka proper, worth the extra few minutes drive.

History: Originally built and opened in 1999. Location: In a business park (no restaurants/supermarkets/gas stations within walking distance) near Arcata Airport. Near US highway 101 exit in north side of McKinleyville. Interior Décor: Standard Holiday Inn Express décor. Lobby area is attractive and inviting. Exterior Appearance: 2 story mission style building in relatively open space area. Outside view from the room I stayed at (239): Balcony, green grass backyard, parking lot, hotel's extended units, forest Room Description: Studio suite - king bed, jacuzzi, mini kitchen Room Size: Approximately 60 square meters. Spacious. Room Cleanness: Clean. Well maintained. Bathroom: J.R. Watkins brand amenities. Shower only. Average size. (Jacuzzi is not in the bathroom as it is next to bed) Noise Insulation: Very quiet. Price and Value: A bit inflated New Year's Eve stay price? Breakfast: Complimentary buffet Bed: Medium softness. Slept fine. Services: Professionally trained friendly hotel staffs.

This wasn't my first choice of accommodation in this part of the Lost Coast. Hell, it wasn't even in my top 10 in my frantic Kayak search, but that's what I get for procrastinating and taking a last-minute, five-hour road trip. Believe me, I was all kinds of hesitant to press the Confirm button to make a two-night reservation here. I had fantasies of an intimate B&B with a fireplace in the heart of Trinidad, but those rooms were long gone before Labor Day weekend. This Holiday Inn Express is logistically in a hamlet called McKinleyville midway between Arcata and Trinidad. All you can see is an empty road to a remote airport from which I never did see a plane take off while I was there. However, at $135 per night for a Deluxe King, it was actually not a bad deal considering how large the room was, and the staff was nice and well intentioned if not all that helpful when it came to local sights. However, as an HIE, everything felt like it was done on the cheap from the furnishings to the breakfast options. The space was also rather loud since it attracted a lot of young families where toddlers used the open hallways as a relay race track. At the end of the day, I take full accountability for my stay here, and I know now what the trade-off is.

Loved this Holiday Inn Express, the location, the bed, the divine soft bedding, the peaceful atmosphere. The primary reason for this location was because it is centrally located to the Jedediah Redwoods and the Humboldt Redwoods which includes Avenue of the Giants! We visited Crescent City’s Battery Lighthouse, Eureka Blue Ox Millworks, and drove by the famous historical Carson House. The HI Express was everything we hoped for and more! Thank you, Staff!
