We celebrated my birthday at The Sanctuary and we were not disappointed. As soon as we arrived, check in was a breeze. We were taken to our beachfront suite via a golf cart! The room was very spacious with a queen bed and a sofa bed which accommodated our family of four comfortably. We loved having the fireplace on the cold nights especially after a day at the beach. We enjoyed a glass of wine on our patio at night just listening to the ocean waves. We had dinner at @saltwoodkitchen. The food and service was amazing! We dined outdoors and were given blankets to keep us warm! We took full advantage of the pool, firepit at night, along with the outdoor games (volleyball, bocce ball, and connect four). We will definitely be back again!
100/100 We’re going to tell everyone about this place is beautiful clean everyone is friendly Eddie Julio JOE joe Excellent service Breakfast was excellent Staff very helpful very accommodating very tranquil setting Dog friendly is a bonus
The check in and comfort staff was amazing. I cannot speak highly enough. Since departing dealing with management to correct an issue has been less than helpful. My issue of being charged extra for a complimentary upgrade, when we had to move rooms, remains unresolved. In addition, the completed charges to my card are higher than what is on my itemized receipt that I received at check out. The hotel is gorgeous, and I had looked forward to staying again, but for the price we paid, and the issues we had with our room, added to spending time for multiple days trying to rectify an issue after vacation, is far more than I had anticipated. I will not likely return.
Came here for a quick birthday weekend away and can’t say I’ve ever slept better - the comfiest king bed with the sliding door open, smelling the salty ocean air and listening to the waves was the best thing I could imagine. Service was impeccable, received an upgraded room at check-in with a fantastic view and every employee made us feel like family. The food at the restaurant was delicious - I ate so much bread dipped in mussel broth I might not fit in my comfy hotel robe anymore! The beach view with fire pits at sunset cannot be beat, and the hot tub was the perfect temperature. I also love that it’s dog friendly - met so many cute furry guests!
Stayed for 3 nights at the resort. Stayed at the bungalow situated right on the beach facing the ocean. We chose this place for some rest and relaxation, and we got it! If you are looking for a noisy night life look elsewhere. Lol. The place is serene and relaxing, and the service was discrete and prompt. Highly recommended.
Relaxing vaction by the ocean with amazing resturant right on site. Salt and wood has fresh sea food in a beautiful setting. Staff was exceptiona especially the manager who helped us with our reservation with american express.
The Bad: BEWARE if you are trying to buy a "cottage" or "villa" of 2 rooms in one of the oceanfront cottages. The sales people will tell you that you can do this and be guarenteed to get your rooms together... but they are lying. We booked this and I asked the sales person point blank twice if it was guarenteed that our 2 rooms would be together in a cottage and she said 'yes, of course.' On the morning of our trip however, they called to say that the rooms could not be together and that it was first come first serve based on availability & occupancy. This is probably illegal false advertising and if I can remenber, I will report to BBB. They literally are lying about their product in order to make sales. A front desk person said "they've had this problem before and the sales people keep promising it even though they can't make that promise." So definitely don't believe them if you try to book the 2-room cottage/villa: they are lying and can't promise the rooms will be together. No or limited housekeeping. No towels at pool. So basically, these guys do not have their act together, and for a $800+/night place, that is not excusable. The Good Despite those problems, I can't give this place 1-star because there are some great qualities. * Great location: not many places in the bay area where you can get a cottage and literally walk out onto the beach with glorious sunsets. * While not 5-star quality, I thought the rooms were fine. * Pool, while not 5-star quality, was nice and very family friendly. * The actual people working there seem friendly and like they are trying to do a good job. Hard to recommend this place with their current management: I saw other hotel guests arguing & irate with the hotel about some issue. And you can see all the recent 1-star reviews: this place has serious problems. Which is a shame, because it is a gorgeous location.…
The power being out & no coffee in the morning was bad enough. They had a generator only in the lobby for 4 hours. Then no cable & they did not bother to address it for over 6 hours. At 1k a night, the WORST experience I have had in my 20 years of 5 star travel
If you are thinking about staying here please let me save you the time and money, don’t do it! I think some context helps, so a little about me. I am from SF and in my late 20s. My husband and I work in tech and VC. I booked a private whale watching charter for my husband’s birthday and needed to find a place for us to stay for the weekend. I was torn between the Ritz Half Moon Bay or the Sanctuary. After doing some research it seemed like the reviews were not that far off and they had the same price point. I assumed they would have the same experience. I was wrong. Do not stay here! Trust me! I wanted to believe all the great photos and figured for the price it should be worth it. I decided upon arrival to upgrade to the panoramic ocean front suit. Our suit was the furthest on the right when facing the ocean and the view was completely obstructed by a sand hill. The beach access and fire pits were closed off due to a wedding. None of which was told to us ahead of time. We had brunch at the restaurant on site. It was advertised that there would be patio seating and live music. Both not true. It looks modern online but the food quality was nothing better than a local diner. The hotel had a timeshare in the middle and only the surrounding rooms are apart of the “hotel.” The quality of amenities, service, and customers is not what is advertised. We walked to the pool, no towels were out for guest, it truly felt like a run down apartment pool. Our tv didn’t work. Any flush of the toilet from our neighbors was heard clearly. It became almost comical for my husband and I as to what we expected vs the reality. If you would say the rooms were $300 a night it would justify what you got in return and I would have no complaints. But when you book a hotel for over $900 a night and then additional money to upgrade you find yourself confused as to what you are getting. I felt so embarrassed brining someone here anticipating it would be a luxury hotel.…
Just got back from a heavenly stay at the Sanctuary Resort. Our room was one of the Panoramic Ocean Front Deluxe guestrooms and it was perfect for the two of us with a private porch and two Adirondack chairs on which we could sit and take in the absolutely stunning view of the Monterey Bay. The fireplace provided the perfect amount of heat to take the chill of the brisk late afternoon breeze. The large swimming pool was the perfect temperature as was the enormous jacuzzi. For those who give Saltwood Restaurant mixed reviews, you must not have had the oysters grilled to perfection. And the black cod - sublime! The room's bedding and mattress were superior quality, and the double sink bathroom stocked with l'Occitane products was spacious enough for both of us to use at the same time. The staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive to all our needs. And the General Manager, Michelle E., treated us like VIPs. Having stayed previously at one of the famed resorts in Big Sur, I can say without hesitation that the lodging, amenities and breathtaking beauty, and the general feeling that our satisfaction was the number one priority, puts this resort on par with V and PR when you factor in the affordability component. Thank you for the truly wonderful stay!…
