I've stayed at Sanctuary Beach Resort at least 6 or 7 times at this point. One of my absolute favorite resorts in Northern California, and practically across all states. The view is unparalleled. Most of my stays have been in either ocean view or oceanfront (including panoramic) rooms and suites. The views are AMAZING. It is rare to step off your patio directly on to the beach. Such a treat. The resort intended to remodel and freshen the property, and then COVID hit. Some rooms could stand some upgrades, and I'm sure they will put the plans back in place for the remodel soon enough. The staff, especially the recent management and staff are fantastic. On our last stay, Robert, the manager, made sure to attend to every single detail of our very special birthday trip. Above and beyond is an understatement. On my latest stay, Eddie at the front desk knocked it out of the ballpark. We had a few issues with our room and without hesitation, he made sure all our concerns were addressed, and even went out of his way to make sure our extended stay reservation was absolutely superb. His attention to detail and friendly demeanor are exactly what I hope for when staying at a resort. If you get a chance, I strongly recommend you book a special stay here.

My wife and I stayed at the Sanctuary Beach Resort for Car Show Weekend. While the rates were high, the service and view exceeded all expectations. From check in to check out the hotel staff was very friendly. I met the General Manager Jonathan who was extremely friendly and even surprised us with a personalized card and bottle of champagne after meeting us. We will definitely Return!

We just got home from a Long Holiday Weekend traveling from San Francisco to San Diego. We decided to stop and stay at The Sanctuary Beach Resort. WOW! This property is stunning! The views are priceless and the staff is amazing!! They really cared about us. The Front Desk employees went above and beyond for us, always accommodating any request we had. The restaurant food was delicious and the cocktails were great! We will be back for sure!

PROS -Very Friendly Staff -Nightly Fire Pits adjacent to the beach -Close Beach Access CONS -Our Room 619, Ocean View $1200 -Ocean View can be seen perhaps with a telescope between a 2 story building and a row of cottages -Walls/Ceilings are paper thin (I can clearly hear our neighbors conversation next door and I think King Kong is sleeping above us) -Rooms are 12 steps wide (I wear a 7.5 women’s shoe) and deep (I can almost touch the room door while in bed-see picture) If you’re desperate for a get away, stay somewhere else. Wish us luck, hopefully King Kong upstairs falls asleep before midnight.

I had reserved a ocean front deluxe room which appeared to be right on the beach/dunes. The pictures on the website look amazing. However we were given a coast view room instead without us knowing until later that night. Fair enough someone made a mistake and checked us into the wrong room. People are human and make mistakes, but there is much more to the story that is upsetting. We got to the room and most of our view was a big pile of wind-blown sand and you could see the ocean if you were in the right location and looked the right way. There is no map that shows which rooms are which "level" so it was not obvious that we were not in the right room, but it really did not look like the pictures on the website. So, yes I should have complained, but did not until later that evening. Later in the evening someone walks around to the deck/ocean side of our room and stares into our room for like 30 seconds which was really weird. We will come back to this. A little while later the manager of the hotel calls the room and asks who we were. What was our name? The hotel had no idea who they had checking into the room we were in, even though they gave us keys to the room. Ok, human mistake, but someone should check why we were in the room. After dinner we walk to our room from the restaurant on site and our card key does not work. Not great since it is a few minute walk to the office and the wind is really blowing. While getting a new key I said that the room was really disappointing for an ocean front deluxe room, not really what was shown on their website. The attendant said that was because for some reason we were in a coast view room not ocean front room. Then he asked me to email him my reservation email (so I guess they did not have an easy way to check what type of room I had reserved, really!). He said the manager would contact me in the morning. No one called, so around 11:00 the next day I went to the office and talked to the manager. He told me that yes they transposed one of the room numbers and that we were in the wrong room. The previous day they had "checked" someone else into the room we were in but when they arrived the card key did not work and the person walked around to see if anyone was inside. This explains the stranger looking into our room. The manager also said they had called the room yesterday to find out who we were. The manager said they had sold/given the room we had reserved to another guest already so they could not give us the type of room we had reserved. He also agreed to knock off money from our bill, more than just the cost difference of the room, but that really did not make up for the missed experience of being in a room with a fantastic view on the beach/ocean when that is what you expected. In summary, I am ok with someone making a human mistake, but what really gets me is why did the manager not figure out we were in the wrong room when they checked someone else into our room and they couldn't get in? Or when they called our room and asked who we were. You would think they would have checked to find out why we were in that room and not in the room we had reserved. Or maybe they did figure it out then and decided not to bother telling us they messed up. Now of course I don't know if they figured out we were in the wrong room before we brought it to their attention or not. The point is they should have looked into it enough to detect the problem when clearly they messed up and check 2 couples into the same room. I would have thought alarm bells would have gone off and they would have moved us to the right room, but that did not happen. For the price we paid for the room, the service from the front desk and manager were not up to par. Yes, we were paying for being on the beach, but there are much cheaper hotels on the beach. You expect a certain level of service for those kind of rates and that was completely botched in our case. It is a beautiful location, too bad we were ripped off of the experience we were expecting. We will not be back.
