We desperately needed an adult night to sleep in without our toddler, so we booked a Friday night stay. Unfortunately we stayed underneath the restaurant and all night and morning we could hear a door slamming and the room would shake. I informed the front desk but they could not stop the noise. I ended up much more sleep deprived then when I arrived and would not recommend staying here if you need some R&R.

Before you book, please understand—The surf rider has a 1 week cancellation policy and makes no exceptions—even if an injury has rendered you unable to go on your trip! NO EXCEPTIONS. My husband and I booked this hotel for a one night mid-week stay and he injured his back a few days before. The Surfrider doesn’t care, it’s all business.

Wonderful boutique hotel with a great Malibu beach vibe. Totally rebuilt 3 or 4 years ago. Only 20 rooms, decorated in a casually comfortable fashion. Awesome rooftop deck with a great view of the beach and Malibu pier. Nice little living room area in place of a lobby. Fantastic staff - friendly, welcoming, and laid back. Highly recommended for a low key Malibu escape.

Can’t say enough about this boutique 20 room hotel. Amazing staff, rooms are great and the private rooftop bar/ restaurant has an amazing view with tasty cocktails, killer breakfast and lunch/ dinner bites. Try the “Endless Summer” toasted coconut margarita …. Can’t wait to visit again

I was gifted a stay at the hotel 2 years ago and it was perfect. Not one issue. I just stayed again and splurged to bring family as a thank you gift, and it was just a bummer. The downstairs rooms are very small and it feels claustrophobic. The beds in those rooms are so bad we and my parents in the other room tossed and turned all night. I heard them which made me feel horrible all night. My mom said “it’s ok honey I just reminded myself that the door opened to a balcony so I can get out, it was all in my head but once I thought that I felt better” I think it’s only worth it if you get a suite. Otherwise it’s far too much money to spend for a bad night sleep.

Lovely amenities, comfy bed and the perfect (almost) beachfront location. The beach os located across a busy highway but there is a safe cross walk. The hotel provides beach chairs, towels and a beach tote. The restaurant is exceptional - I ate breakfast and dinner at the beautiful rooftop restaurant with a view of the ocean. The only drawback I found with this hotel was the noise. They should double pane the windows - you can hear cars driving on the highway all night. I was on the first floor and the noise from the people in the room above me was relentless.

Hi Lisa! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a positive review and we are so glad to hear you enjoyed so many aspects of our property. While we are located on the iconic Pacific Coast Highway and road noise is inevitable, we do actually have double paned windows with a special noise cancelling seal in our sliding glass doors. There is also white noise machines and earplugs in all of our guest rooms for the noise sensitive! We hope to welcome you back in the future! Sincerely, Team Surfrider

We loved staying in the Surfrider Malibu. The hotel rightfully prides itself for its easygoing, relaxed atmosphere. Very friendly staff, well designed functional rooms. Impeccable housekeeping. This hotel was apparently a motel in a previous life that has been completely redone. When moving within the hotel, its barebones still remind of the layout of a motel (organisation of parking, rooms access, reception etc). We found it a plus as it nicely blends into its environment right across the Malibu Pier. The star of the hotel is a guest-only rooftop with splendid bar/restaurant, offering magnificent views of the bay. Watching people catch the first wave in the morning almost felt as good as hitting the waves ourselves.

I love the vibe at this hotel - so very Malibu! If you could bottle up Malibu in a jar, it would be the rooftop deck at this hotel. We stayed in one of the downstairs rooms, and it was comfy and really cute. The only downside is the bathroom is teeny - not cut out for a large man-sized person, but it was fine for my daughter and I. They have a great team in place, and the food is farm-to-table special. I love the tiny flowers on the homemade banana bread. This is a very special place and the owners put a lot of thought into making it so Cali style.

Our second annual visit and have to say the service is even better which I thought was impossible. The entire team (I apologize as I will omit names) Kelly, Derek, Hunter, Trevor, Shelby and Skully are truly relaxed professionals on the job at all times to make your stay special. 18 rooms and I see at least 10 staff members per day with the nicest cleaning staff you could imagine. The food is extraordinary and extremely thoughtful in terms of ingredients and presentation. If I could give it 6 out of 5 I would.
