I've stayed here a handful of times over the last couple of years, and every time I do I have the same great experience. You can check out other reviews for decor and amenities; what I love about Mama is the way she makes me feel. The first time I booked based solely on proximity to my daughter's home. When I walked in the door, I immediately thought, "I am way too old and uncool to be staying here," and I steeled myself for a less-than-enthusiastic welcome from the fabulous children staffing the front desk. I couldn't have been more wrong. Mama Shelter has a truly spectacular rooftop bar and a great restaurant, and both are draws for a young, cool crowd. Despite the fact that everyone I could see, including the employees, was young and hip and beautiful, and I am a 58yo mom who looks exactly and only like a 58yo mom (from somewhere that is not LA, no less), I was welcomed with genuine warmth and impressive professionalism. Not a nanosecond of side-eye. I felt like I belonged from the moment I checked in, and through my several stays here, that never waivers. Last night I checked in again, this time with my daughter, and we had kind of set ourselves up for difficulty--arriving in two separate vehicles, too much luggage . . . we do know better, but that was the situation this particular time. Once again, I found myself just wanting to bake cookies for everyone who works here. There is no valet at the moment (COVID), but everyone who was working jumped in to help us: the sweet security guard graciously walked down the street to carry our bags. Angel at the front desk not only expedited the process for us, but also physically ran down the street to stop us from parking in the wrong lot. This morning I've camped out in the bar, which is closed at the moment, but the lovely girl at the front desk made me and my computer and my numerous little questions feel nothing but welcome. Honestly, this is a review for Mama Shelter, but it should also be for all the Mamas who raised these nice young adults. Seriously, y'all--what kind of cookies? This Mama loves you right back.

Awesome place near Hollywood boulevard (walking distance) Totally loved this hotel, would recommend to all my friends and family, staff is super friendly, decoration is beautiful and the rooftop rocks! If you are a guest staying at the hotel they instantly put you top on the waiting list for the rooftop, wich has a great demand Great clean rooms and has an interactive TV system, very cool (thanks for having adult films selection LOL)

Extremely disappointed in this Mama Shelter property in comparison to those I have stayed in in France (Lyon , Paris, and Marseille). All properties have the same concept hotel/bar/restaurant, but the LA property executes it poorly. Hotels dot com booking number 9181403402007 for reference. Note: I was coming from a long 17 hour overseas flight to visit LA, and was extremely jet-lagged. 1. Hotel guests need to navigate a lobby area clogged with 'went shopping for my new Forever 21 outfit to wear out and party/mojito bros' to access the 2 elevators up to the rooms. Only 1 elevator goes up to the rooftop, AFAIK, and in fact any wasted drunk non-guest can access the hotel's other floors via this elevator. This led to one Friday evening of girls running up and down the 5th floor hallway YELLING AND THROWING THINGS for several hours. Luckily I did bring earplugs and was able to block the noise out for a while, nonetheless, that that even happened in unacceptable in a hotel of $250/night. Not even a question of 'we can't control our guests' behavior.' No, but you need to keep 100s of drunk people that pass through every night out of the paying hotel guest floors. They need to either hire security on every floor (not possible) or somehow otherwise limit the rooftop-only basic crowd to only the rooftop. 2. On the Saturday I stayed coming back one evening to drop stuff off: once again, a huge crowd of basics clogging the lobby to access the rooftop elevator. I saw the clog up and asked if I could take the stairs up the 5 floors to the room (again unacceptable), and the reception person said I could, but I should note that someone had just VOMITED in the stairwell (this was like 9:30 pm so you see the level of basics amateur hour style) and even though it had been cleaned, there might be a lingering smell. Are you serious? Getting hotel guest priority access to the elevator to access my room was not offered to me. 3. Unfortunately for me, my room was on the 5th floor which is the floor directly underneath the rooftop bar. Yes, the room's windows are double-paned, but the ceiling and walls are not. With the music going on it was so so so loud and disturbing. I'm not an early bird by any means, and am not some prudish teetotaler, but once again the barfy good time of the bar patrons are 1st consideration here over the hotel guests, who might need to do hotel-like things such as rest and sleep. 4. Property has endured a lot of wear and tear, and I'm guessing is an older property in the Mama Shelter chain. Not surprising given the 'partiers first, hotel guest last' thing they have going on. Carpet in my room (508) was very worn down, though the room itself was very clean and the bed is comfortable. But weird thing, there is not even a cup in the room say if I wanted to have a drink of water, or use one to brush my teeth. Like all Mama Shelter properties, no coffee machine in the room to encourage you to come down and mingle (sure, right right....or spend more money on top of the $250 a night to sleep in a nightclub)? What if you just want to chill in your room in the morning naked or in your PJs? There's free coffee downstairs but that wraps up pretty early. Even cheap hotels provide a coffee maker of some kind. Nope, once again, a guest's need is not a priority. 4. Only 1 star given for the friendly staff. 'Cool' hip overdone decor can only get you so far, until you actually have to provide a basic decent hotel environment. The only hip people here are the staff, the rooftop bar guests are just hoping to maybe get a whiff on their Forever 21 sequin halters to take home with them later. The hotel needs to decide what the are. Are you a hotel that is going to provide the basic number one service a hotel should: a restful environment to rest after busy full days. Or a bar nightclub? The two so close together is not working. I will probably just get some canned corporate response, or none at all. I won't be staying in a Mama Shelter property again, however. In the meantime, I get to eat a $1400 lesson in bad hotel management.

Hello Mupp D, thank you for your candid review of Mama Shelter Los Angeles. We are disappointed that we did not provide to you the best hospitality--and the warmth of welcome and throughout your stay that makes Mama Shelter famous. We appreciate that you liked the quality of our housekeeping, our mattress, and team. We strive to make our hotel guests the priority--and we failed to do that for you. We appreciate you selecting us and have taken your critique to heart--and because of it, will do a better job of taking care of our hotel guests. Loved this location--so much within walking distance! Coffee, a farmer's market on Sunday, all kinds of restaurants and bars, old Hollywood stuff like the Walk of Fame. The room was small but comfortable -- big comfy king size bed with nice pillows, fun decor, a lovely rain shower in the bathroom. We didn't pay for a view. There was a parking lot nearby that had plenty of room for our rental car. It's about an hour-ish from LAX on side streets, given the infamous traffic. The hotel is a gathering spot for the young and hip--the rooftop bar is supposedly fabulous (it was closed for a private event the night we wanted to go--but we had great cocktails at another hopping hip place nearby, so... next time!) Guests do get to skip the long line for the bar. Great people watching! We are neither young nor hip, but we found that our 3rd floor room was really quiet given the liveliness downstairs. I did hear a loud guy make a phone call at one point, but I do think he was just one of those loud guys. Overall nice and peaceful in the room! We'll definitely stay here the next time we visit our daughter who lives a few blocks away. Mama is fun, affordable, and comfortable!
