Stayed here in November 2019. Upon arrival it felt like I was walking into a bar/restaurant not a hotel. Its an odd set up, with one small desk as the hotel reception and a busy bar to your left and an open restaurant area to your right, so feels odd wheeling in a suitcase in between these two. That aside the room was ok, small, functional. However you get no drawers, no wardrobe, no TV..just an Apple monitor to watch stuff on that was overly complicated to function properly (why oh why do hotels not have simple TVs anymore?!) The rooftop bar seemed popular with the crowd but never used it myself.

I will say the food in the restaurant was excellent. You can tell they use quality ingredients cooked by someone that cares.

Overall it was ok, The location is a it hit and miss, its a block up from Sunset Blvd and Down from Hollywood Blvd, but don't go thinking that its all glitz and glamour, that's about 2 miles west of this place, this is the not so glam and not much around end of town.

The oddest thing was upon checking in they put a $300 hold on your card for miscellaneous purchases, but strangely when you use the bar or restaurant you cant actually charge it to your room, so I don't then get the point of having a $300 hold on your card when you cant actually charge anything to your room (my accommodation was also pre-paid)

Would I stay here again? No..not really. Its not my kinda feel for a hotel, and I wasn't keen on the lack of anything around location wise. Nothing bad about the place, but for me I like stay somewhere with a bit more around the area and something that looks and feels like a proper hotel.

Had the pleasure to check in at Mama Shelter Los Angeles at the start of Aug. The location was amazing if you like party vibes and can withstand loud noises. The atmosphere was very vibrant as there is a long queue to head up to the rooftop bar upstairs.
The room does not come with a kettle nor beverage maker but one can always come down to the lobby and ask for a cup or refill of their water should you need one.
Parking near the establishment was made easy should one enquire at the hotel. You pay a fixed rate per day directly to the hotel and you place the “coupon” on the dashboard for in and out privileges. Do not pay direct to the parking garage nearby. (The charges and benefits are different)
The Front desk staff like Joyce and Dorian were exceptional. The Bar manager Veda was also really enthusiastic and efficient when it came to service.
Many thanks to these wonderful people for making my stay a fantastic one!
Below are random pictures of the “Star Wars” room with the view of the Hollywood sign from afar, the rooftop lounge seating and my favourite nightshift staff joyce!

It’s true, Mama loves you! I stayed here as a solo traveller. Every single day here was great, I was here x3 nights in total while in L.A.

The location is brilliant, you can walk to Hollywood Boulevard in 10 mins. It’s really well placed, just far enough away to not be around tons of people.

The rooftop bar is awesome, great views! The downstairs bar is fun, I spoke to so many people. Raphael and Matteo were brilliant! Shared local tips for L.A and where to visit.

The breakfast was delicious, I had the bare necessities breakfast with a side of avo - yum.

Checking in and out was a breeze.

If you can, book a room wth Hollywood hills view - you will not regret it!

Thanks so much Mama, can’t wait to come back!!

Okay so I have no idea where to start... we arrived from Vegas to Los Angeles as soon as the taxi pulled up outside of the hotel I was confused like surely this isn’t the correct place we are staying at? We went inside and the whole reception area is just a loud crazy bar not what we had in mind at al. We went to our room it made no sense whatsoever. No tv just a computer that had free porn channels on that’s it with Star Wars masks on the lights dirty subway tiles in the bathroom even the shampoo had phrases on like “mama wants to cream you” bit creepy! The themeing was just all over the place and made zero sense. I came back on the evening with my husband and there was a bouncer refusing to let me into my hotel room until I had scrambled into my bag to get my room key out while everyone was partying around me I felt so embarrassed like I had done something wrong. Hard to sleep when all through the night down below the thudding of music and partying going on. Had breakfast in the morning and the server charged my husband extra for another glass of orange juice when the breakfast was suppose to be included with our price. Honestly believe me don’t book this hotel despite what good reviews you have seen, I only booked this hotel from the reviews which leaves me even more confused why it is rated so good 🤔 .. the place is a joke, in fact don’t go to Los Angeles altogether you view Hollywood as glitz and glam all I could see was homeless crackheads pushing trolleys along with their belongings in and the smell of weed Along the Hollywood walk of fame. It was so bad that me and my husband booked and paid for an early flight to Florida the day after arriving .. ruined part of our honeymoon. AVOID!!! ❌❌❌

I’m not sure where to start, I’ve stayed at a few hotels during Covid due to work and I lean towards boutique hotels instead of chains. I understand that there are protocols and I’m happy to stay in line with them. This, however, is not a case of Covid but rather pretentious staffing and lack of ability to be kind. I couldn’t understand how any one person could be less hospitable let alone several individuals.
$200 a night isn’t expensive but I don’t think that it warrants a feeling of inconveniencing someone for a cup of coffee or just trying to get to my room. God forbid, I try to get to my room and without annoy the people at the door even after I told them I was staying there.
Unless you don’t mind, sleeping here is not without the night club vibe and noise along with the lack of amenities.
Other mama shelters have been great but I don’t recommend this one. I

I will cut right to it. I write this review from my hotel room at Mama Shelter. The staff is great. Very pleasant. Very helpful. The food this time around was... meh. Which was surprising because the one time I ate here before, the food was great, which made me want to stay here for my next LA trip. This is that trip and staying here was a mistake. The rooms are not soundproof. Not only can I hear the corny frat bro conversation of my neighbors. I can clearly hear the music from the rooftop. It's like trying to fall asleep in the middle of a club. Besides me flying in from the East Coast so I'm not in sync with the times zone, the music is not even enticing me to want to go join. Did I hear Destiny Child's Bills Bills Bills? Who did the DJ blackmail for this job? Who's playlist is this? The music starts around 7pm and doesn't end until 2am ish. I really hate to write this review knowing how hard the pandemic has been on the hospitality industry, but this is a nightmare for anyone looking for a relaxing room to sleep in. To be more complete in my review I'll give some other highlights. The location is great. Very walkable and electric scooters are everywhere for longer commutes. The room itself is great. Comfortable bed, clean. Housekeeping is as requested rather than automatic. Which I'm fine with. There are unhoused people nearby but this is LA. They have a significant issue with the unhoused like... every other major US city. I do not believe they pose a threat or make the area unsafe. Just sad to see, honestly. But Mama Shelter has all the booze and obnoxiously loud music to drown out your sorrows. Would not recommend anyone to stay in the hotel but would definitely come back for the restaurant and nightclub, which is what this place really is.

Thank you, retiredg2022, for staying at Mama LA. We appreciate your staying the hotel and your many fine comments. We agree, our location is great--in close walking distance to many famous attractions in Los Angeles/Hollywood. We appreciate your found our bed comfortable, the room clean, the team great. Our location in Hollywood, in the "Vinyl District," is busy. Music has been the hallmark of our part of Hollywood since the 1950's. We continue to offer a wide variety of programming of all types of music, comedy, and art. (Check our our comedy nights on Tuesday and Thursday night--these are always free despite having famous comics on our rooftop). On weekend nights we are open until 2am, and on warm weekends it is very popular--so the people themselves, the scene itself, energized. It is a great place to be for many. Perhaps the other nights are a better fit for those seeking quietude. We appreciate your being with us and hope to see you soon--for comedy nights or other nights when we close at midnight. Love, Mama

After checking in, I was given incorrect instructions by hotel staff on where to park (after paying $35 to park in the "hotel" lot) and had my car towed overnight as a result.

When I discovered the issue the next morning, a different hotel staffperson told me that I was directed to the wrong lot, which is actually closer to the hotel than the correct one. They acknowledged that they should have made this more clear, and it sounded like this has happened to other guests before (they referenced a map that I should have been given but never was). I was then told that the cost of the tow would be reimbursed and my room would be refunded for the trouble. I spent $30 on a Lyft and it took me over an hour to retrieve the car.

When I called back later, they told me they'd only refund my room, which is nice but was much less than the cost of the tow ($402). They suggested I send a followup email, to which they never responded.

The hotel was nice otherwise, but this was a really disappointing way to end the trip.

Hi jeremyspiegel, thanks for staying at Mama Shelter Los Angeles and for your review. We are sorry that your car was towed by the City of Los Angeles. We do have two different parking lots that we use--and our guests do park in both lots all the time without incident. The price ($30) is the price that the lots charge us directly. We are happy to offer you a very low rate on a future stay, if you write to our GM (Andrew) directly. (andrew.jay@mamashelter.com) he will help. With love, Mama

Although the hotel was generally good, there was virtually no storage space in the room. The enormous hanging lampshade was also a nuisance. The wi-fi and TV setup was very good, as we were able to use Netflix without having to connect our own computer to the TV. We had a good view of the Hollywood sign, as our room was on the fifth floor, for which we paid extra.

I stayed here for my first visit in L.A. The hotel is just one block away from Hollywood Blvd, and a 90 min walk from the Griffith Observatory. Great for first time tourists. The staff is super friendly. The hotel and restaurant/bar skews towards a younger population. Great for people in their twenties to early thirties, but probably not for families. I went during the weekend, and the bar gets a lot of business. This hotel is ideal for friends trips, a couples retreat (you have wall mirrors in your room), and extroverts. Also, for some reason, this hotel has the nicest smelling elevator I’ve ever been in.

The only con was a lack of parking. It has a valet, but the spot is easy to miss. I managed to find a public parking lot for $65.

Great hotel. Staff is is super friendly and helpful. Lobby is a fun eclectic mix of games, grouped sitting areas, and eye catching kitsch. The bed was very comfy and our room was very clean. Location is excellent - you are in Hollywood but not right on the boulevard so noise is not an issue. We stayed on NYE and I think the pricing was excellent. I checked several area hotels and all were pretty much double or more than we paid. We also spent time at the rooftop bar which we found to be a great kick off spot for our New Years shenanigans.
Only small downsides We had a friend stop by and the only thing for him to sit on (besides the bed) was a very uncomfortable bench type thing which I think, technically, is supposed to double as your luggage rack since there was not one in the closet. Also if you self park it is several blocks to walk back to the hotel (this is my husbands cheap-ness - I would have just paid the valet cost)
