The Garland garners praise for its exceptional service, friendly staff, and convenient shuttle to Universal Studios, making it a hit with guests. The pool and ambiance receive accolades, while the spotless rooms and inviting retro atmosphere also stand out.
However, some visitors express concerns about high parking fees and disruptive noise. Despite these drawbacks, the hotel's charm and cleanliness leave many travelers with a positive impression.

Detailed Reviews
This hotel is beautiful and in a great location. The food in the hotel is lovely and the breakfast is good value for money. I would have given a 5. Star review as our room was very comfortable and quiet cannot fault at all ( we was on the back of the building not facing the highway). However others who were with us were on the front and could hear the traffic only to be told if they wanted to move it would be $30 extra a night. This is wrong and people should be warned of this beforehand. We only paid an extra £30 at the beginning for our room and we only paid this as we wanted a twin room otherwise we would have been in the same position as the other people we was with and being forced to pay $30 extra a night. Funnily enough we was asked when we checked in if we also wanted to pay $30 extra a night for an “upgrade”. Please stop doing this as seems a way the hotel makes money from people. Other than that the hotel is beautiful and I would recommend it providing your at the back of the building and cannot hear the traffic. If you can sleep with ear plugs on then you’ll be fine. The pool/jacuzzi area is lovely and open until 10pm everyday it is also heated so can be used all year round. This is great!

It’s my first time staying at this hotel and it was a great experience. The staff is very friendly. Michael checked me he was very informative. I always have 1000 questions and he was able to answer all thousand questions with a great attitude.
The hotel itself is a very nice & it’s very clean. This is my second hotel since Covid and they take sanitizing very serious. There was always someone cleaning all the rooms had a special sticker on the door knob so you know that that room has been sanitized.
The restaurant at this hotel Front Yard As a very nice restaurant it’s outdoors. It’s a popular spot for locals I recommend to call and reserve a table in advance or reserve thru open table application. I had dinner there I highly recommend the green garbanzo hummus in the jalapeño mac & cheese ( I am a Mac & cheese addict).Overall I had a great time stay there for two days

I recently returned from a short visit to the LA area and I can’t say enough about this amazing hotel! I love it there. I just wish it was not clear across the country for me since I live in NY.
The hotel grounds are beautiful and there is a fun pool and whirlpool to sit by and enjoy a sunny California day. Food and drinks at the pool bar and The Front Yard restaurant are delicious! Always great options and everything always tasty!
The rooms are spacious and decorated nicely.
The staff are friendly are very helpful. I want to give a special shout out to Alfred Bedonia. He is one of the Assistant Managers and he was incredibly helpful. One day during my stay he went out of his way to help me as I was at the business center trying to get some documents printed out. It was a busy time at the front desk, but he really took the time to help
me with the computer glitch I was having and made sure my work documents got printed.
I also love the location and usually when I travel to the area I try and avoid renting a car. Lyft and Uber’s are what I use if it is too far to walk. There are definitely shops and restaurants within walking distance and it is great that they have an hourly shuttle to Universal and City Walk.
Here though are just a few pet peeves that I have:
I love that the hotel tries organize weekly special events and publishes a printed schedule - things such as a yoga class, or a walk of cute Studio City neighborhood, or a training session at the gym are just an example. I just found the times that these activities were scheduled for (quite early in the morning) to be very inconvenient for people who are not early risers (and given the fact they some people are on vacation and want to sleep in a little in the morning). It would be great if they were held a bit later but I also understand it might be a staffing issue and that might be the best time The Garland can provide a staff member. But I suspect when these things are so early, they perhaps get a poor turnout, but the hotel still can take credit for offering them? I would just love to see more options, maybe two days a week a yoga class and maybe one in the evening. How about a water aerobics class? Maybe a cooking class?
Also, some of the rooms have balconies. They are small balconies but it is still nice to have the option to step outside. The only thing is that the door to open and get out onto the balcony is very, very complicated to use. Three times my friend and I had to call maintenance to come help us.
Third, and this is very minor, but I’m a big bath person, and while the bathrooms are beautiful and very modern; there are very few rooms at The Garland that have a tub.
Anyway, all things considered- this is such a fun hotel with a lot of cool, Old Hollywood history. I highly recommend it. When visiting don’t forget to check out the cute general store they have onsite that offers lots of cute gifts and souvenirs! I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

Easy access to Universal Walk, Universal Studio's, Brady House and then UBER access for anywhere else you want to go for around 10-12 USD one way. Hotel is very Groovy/Retro, Welcome at reception was best out of USA trip, Very pleasant and helpful, very spacious room, amenities are great, went to the Gym and used laundry where all machines worked well. In room Air conditioning unit was a little loud and we turned off on a couple of nights as it was not required. Overall an awesome place for your next visit to North Hollywood. I wont stay anywhere else when we return.

We've stayed at the Garland (or visited the restaurant) many times over the years, but were especially grateful for their service and attention to detail during covid. The management team, including Kylie and Daniel, were beyond thoughtful, helpful, and kind. I think it's very rare to find such personalized service at an affordable rate in a city like Los Angeles. The Garland feels like a little oasis tucked into a residential area of LA. It's close to Universal, but with easy access to the freeway, so it's very convenient to anywhere. And we just love Studio City for all of the great amenities, restaurants, etc but without all of the mid-city congestion and west side prices.
As far as the rooms, my kids and I rate the beds as a 10! The food at the restaurant is also exceptional, and I love the trendy outdoor and spacious patio, that does not have the LA crowds or attitudes. I'm trying to think of some constructive criticism to add, so this review doesn't sound skewed, but honestly, any small problems we might have had with our room were immediately addressed, so they were non-issues, really.
Basically, we just kept extending our stay.... And we expect to be back in the near future!

We spent 8 wonderful nights at this property. We were visiting family in LA and celebrating my husband's 80 th birthday. We selected this property on the recommendation of a family member and it was an outstanding choice for our 3 families who met us there and had children on spring break. Everything about The Garland exceeded our expectations.
The staff was welcoming and knowledgeable and very accommodating to all the guests. They went out of their way at breakfast or anytime we ate at the hotel to be very sure everyone pleased and enjoying the food and ambience. Traveling as a multi generational family of 10 can be a challenge but we never felt rushed or without attention if we needed/requested anything. The rooms and entire property were in excellent condition and well appointed. The family friendly pool area and the courtyard with games out everyday for children a big plus. Movie nights by the pool such. bright idea for the kids. There are washers and dryers conveniently located near the pool and work out center which is a big convenience when staying more than a day or 2.
Located minutes from Universal studios ( they provide free trolley service to Universal which we used and was a tremendous plus ) and the LA zoo and the Griffith park complex and close to downtown and Dodger stadium and Burbank we felt the location a plus. The hotel is appointed with some lovely plantings which gives it a calming effect especially when returning from a busy day. All the activities for the day are clearly listed.
We always looked forward to returning to our home away from home as we experienced it.
The restaurant staff was so attentive and helpful and friendly and the prices reasonable so we were able to begin every morning with a leisurely breakfast at " The Front Yard. " Open also for lunch and dinner this a major convenience.
In summary The Garland is a busy, welcoming property with well trained staff and management and everything in good order. Has easy self parking. Ideal for this trip or any stay.
We most certainly would return to The Garland and highly recommend it. So refreshing to experience a stay with so many pluses for all ages. Congrats to the people who make this happen !

Rarely, if ever, does a hotel manage to improve its look over time without undergoing a complete makeover. The Garland, a lovely boutique style hotel located in Studio City, CA is just such a gem which has been around for decades but does not show signs of aging and is only improving with its age.
Originally cast as a Howard Johnson, the Garland has found a new role as a moderately priced boutique hotel for both the business and trend-conscious tourist traveler. Underscoring the vintage aspects of its architecture as well as the materials used for its flooring and rooftop, the Garland manages a beautiful combination of new and old without looking cheap nor pre-fabricated.
Looking to get away on short notice we turned to the convenient up hotels tonight and were able to snag one of the remaining rooms for a tremendously reduced price! Although we were uncertain as to what type of room we would get we were delighted upon check-in to hear that we had received a king room with a Garden view on the first level which was only steps away from the pool which is exactly where we went within 20 minutes of checking in. The pool is beautifully laid out, towels are ample and the loungers comfortable. It's like a resort oasis in the middle of Studio City! With a poolside bar we had drinks and were relaxing in moments. The room is very comfortable, well laid out, has all the comforts of home and a great bed. What a GREAT hotel! Loved it and if I were visiting I'd stay here again!

The Garland is a very nice little hotell in Studio City, with an almost European vibe to it. We were in LA to experience the beaches in Santa Monica and to go to Universal, for which the hotel offers a free trolly ride, very nice. The pool area is very pleasant with a bar that didn’t leave us thirsty. There was served fruit to the guests at the pool, free of charge and there was always fresh towels available. Our room was very satisfactory and was kept clean and fresh every day. The beds were, according to my wife, very comfortable. We ate at the restaurants several times, and can recommend not only the food, but the service was great. That also goes for all the hotel staff, we felt very welcome and well taken care of all the time. The neighbourhood in north Hollywood isn’t a typical tourist neighbourhood, but that was ok for us as we spent most of our time at the Garland. There were some minor issues, an elevator that not always wanted to work, but we didn’t mind using the stairs when everything else was so nice. The complimentary wifi had good coverage and the speed was satisfactory for our needs. Overall, a very nice hotell with an athmosphere, that we Europeans, liked very much, highly recommendable!

We stayed here one night to be close to an early morning game show appearance. This hotel has been around for years and was once a hot spot for celebrities. I actually attended an event there many years ago and got to meet Beverly Garland. The retro vibe is awesome and the lobby is very trendy. Our room was in the building to the right of the lobby and walking through the hall and in the elevator we noticed a very strong smell of some kind of cleaning agent. Once we got into the room, we didn't notice it. The beds were comfy, the bathroom was clean and roomy, and the restaurant on-site was very enjoyable. We'd recommend this place to anyone who wants to be close to everything!

The location is centrally located to a wide variety of fun things to do. The property’s largest border is an LA fwy so be aware that there is road noise. Generally the Garland could offer a lot but misses on many levels. Charging guests for parking is unacceptable for a surface parking in a region where there is NO public transportation. The general price/rate for the accommodations is quite high. Bottom line - Price does not fit the service delivered. instead of holding a $100 per night up front for possible charges they CHARGE your account and issue a credit if not used - check your statement at check out. Checking in the front desk makes guests feel like we are getting fleeced, and we are. The front lobby staff ignored us and walked past us before we had to ask to be checked in. They offered no help with luggage. The Garland is pretending to be a resort and it still looks like a hipster version of its former life as a hotel chain. Sorry guys but you are missing the mark and trying too hard to be cool. I booked 2 nights for my wife and I and 5 nights for relatives. We all shared the same experience. The Garland has the advantage because there are few competitors in the area.

Responded Jun 21, 2022
Thank you for your feedback! We are located very close to the Red Line Metro and we do offer a shuttle to the station and Universal Studios in an effort to mitigate our guests needing to pay for parking elsewhere during their stay. Our $100 incidental hold is an industry standard; unfortunately it can appear that the money is removed from your account if a debit card is used instead of a debit card. We apologize that those amenities and policies were not clearly explained and that your stay was not what you expected. Please feel free to reach out directly to one of our Hotel Assistant Managers at laura@thegarland.com to arrange our next stay should you choose to give us another chance to meet your expectations.
