...it has those stupid amenities fees. I stayed here, because I was part of a group. We got a group rate that waived the amenities fee, which made the price comparable to another hotel I was considering that wasn't as convenient or luxurious. However, I object to amenities fees on principle -- if it's not optional, just increase the room price! That's really the only reason why I gave this hotel four stars instead of five. Otherwise, I enjoyed my stay at the Kimpton Hotel Wilshire. The hotel is well-appointed, the rooms are comfortable, and you can't beat the location, if you're interested in visiting LACMA, the Academy Museum, the Petersen Automotive Museum and the La Brea Tar Pits. Beverly Hills, the Farmers Market, and the West 3rd Street corridor are an easy walk from the hotel, too (~1 mile). Pros: -- Convenient location. I didn't rent a car and I was able to walk to most of the places I wanted to visit. In 2024, a subway station is supposed to open near LACMA, and the subway is supposed to reach LAX, which will make it even more convenient. A cab (not ride-share) to and from the airport costs $40-50, depending on traffic. -- Rooms are quiet and well-appointed. I was in a standard King room, #605. Not much of a view, but I didn't care. -- Staff are helpful and friendly. -- The second-floor lounge was convenient as a meeting place for our group. Since it was a reunion of sorts, we could hang out there at night and talk without having to squeeze into someone's room (the lobby is very small). There was also free coffee, tea and ice water. They serve snacks in the late afternoon, but we didn't take advantage of that, because we always our and about or had dinner plans. -- The rooftop bar and pool are small but have terrific views. Even if you don't swim or drink, check it out! The lower seating area was a nice place to have a drink. -- Room had a safe. Cons: -- Price: The Kimpton Wilshire Hotel is a bit more expensive than I'm usually willing to pay, but, as I said, the group rate made it more competitive. Parking is pricey, too ($45/day), but since I didn't have a car, it wasn't an issue. -- The fridge is filled with mini-bar items, so there's very little room to store your own items (leftovers). In fact, there was sign not to store personal items in there. Hmpf. -- Rainfall showerhead -- hate them! They don't provide enough pressure or volume of water! -- The bathroom faucet doesn't stick out into the sink far enough. When I wash my face, I cup my hands to collect water under the faucet and splash it on my face. Because the faucet is to close to the sink wall, water would run onto the counter and pool there. I put a washcloth next to the faucet to prevent my things from getting wet. I've never had this problem in a hotel bathroom before. -- Room was a bit humid, even though the AC was on. It was in the high 70s/low 80s when we were in LA, and I didn't think it was that humid out (though apparently it was humid to locals). I was surprised by how humid the room felt. NOTE: When I told the cab driver from the airport that I wanted to go to the "Kimpton on Wilshire," he didn't recognize the name (he's been driving in LA for at least a decade). When I gave him the street address, he recognized it as "the Hotel Wilshire." Perhaps if I had told him to go to the Kimpton Hotel Wilshire, he might have recognized it. The confusion makes me think that the property existed previously as simply the Hotel Wilshire and was purchased by Kimpton later. Would I stay here again? I would certainly consider it, depending on where I want to go and what I want to see in the city. …
