This is a nice hotel. The rooms are tiny. The bathroom/entryway in our Premium King Suite with a View was over half the size of the room. But they manage the space well. High quality fixtures/furnishings. Definitely form over function in some places, though. There were a few issues. One is that I tried to order room service via text, as I'd done two days prior and didn't get any reply until much later in the day. I ended up calling instead, which was fine. Not a big deal. The second is that the windows aren't up to the task of keeping the city noise out of the room. Throughout the night, people were doing donuts in the streets as well as blasting music at 3 in the morning. Cars are constantly backfiring (which sound like explosions, btw) and you would regularly hear people screaming on the streets. You can't control what happens beyond your walls, but you can control the effect within them. Third, the showers are pretty ridiculous. There's no shelf within reach of the water flow, so you either have to put the soap and shampoo on the floor or get out from under the water to get a squirt of soap, shampoo, and conditioner. Getting a drink at your signature bar is unbelievably painful. It took two of us a half-hour of standing in line to get a drink. There were two people manning the bar. One was experienced, one was not. The second one would take an order and then do dishes. It was a holiday weekend and I think it's knowable that this would be a very busy weekend. This was objectively a terrible experience that could have been easily avoided. A big issue is that the vegetarian options for dining with you are really limited for every meal. What was there was very good. But we stayed for four nights and had exhausted the options within the first day or two and had to eat elsewhere. Lastly, it's a little frustrating that guests need to always go to the card given at the front desk to get back to the room service menu. Trying to navigate to see that menu from just the website at the very least was hard to find. I couldn't get there after searching for several minutes and had to dig the card out of the trash to get back to a page that would show it.

What a beautifully designed hotel - if you are a fan of Jelly Wearstler this is a must stop destination when you are in LA.

I chose to do a staycation and work from the hotel, the rooftop is a little oasis in the city and the food and drinks are great. I only ate breakfast in the downstairs restaurant but it hit the spot and the coffee was just what I needed in the mornings.

The simple but chic rooms are very comfortable, I appreciated that they stocked them with Box Water and there was good lighting to get ready with a full length mirror for my fit checks. (I hate when rooms don’t have full length mirrors!)

Very walkable but just be aware DTLA can get a bit seedy, Ubers are affordable to get around too.

We visited LA from Phoenix to celebrate my birthday. We chose the DTLA Proper for its location (proximity to the Arts District/Row DLTA, The Broad/Grand Central Market, Koreatown/Chinatown/Little Tokyo and Pasadena) and to immerse ourselves in the posh Kelly Wearstler interiors and the designs of many local artisans. We were not disappointed!

All of the staff went above and beyond to ensure that we were welcomed. And when I say all, I mean all from the moment that we walked in and were greeted by the doormen to the front desk staff to the restaurant staff. Everyone was genuinely kind and made us feel uplifted, like we were at our home away from home. All of the DTLA Proper team were prompt and accommodating with our needs. Each person took the time to answer our questions and our conversations did not feel rushed. It felt like a community.

I do not want to mention every interior aspect of the hotel because I do not want to spoil if for anyone, but every area was meticulously crafted to create a pleasurable design experience for the guests down to the last detail. The beds were comfortable, and everyone woke up well rested. The bathroom was spacious and well-lit. The roof offers breathtaking views of downtown and a serene experience for starting the morning with sunrise views. We did not use the pool on the roof but every time we visited the roof, the pool was vacant and available. The Fitness Center had adequate equipment available ranging from free weights, cable pulleys, Peloton and Tonal trainer. When we used the Fitness Center there were only two other guests and other times it was not crowded. The hotel is well maintained and clean. It is also pet-friendly. We had smoothies and a buckwheat tortiglioni takeout from Caldo Verde. Both were tasty and delicious. We highly recommend the Downtown Los Angeles Proper!

We knew we had made the correct choice of hotels downtown Los Angeles for our 36 hour stay-cation. What a classy and professional reception, from the minute we dropped our car off at the Valet Only podium. The front desk staff could not have been friendlier (under the wonderful direction of Amber Tucker, manager). We were fortunate to have been upgraded because of my Titanium Lifetime Status, and arriving at 1:00 p.m., our room was ready. How lucky were were to enjoy a beautiful downtown city view from 12 floors up. The room decor and layout were 1st rate, and the Aesop bathroom amenities were our absolute favorite. The designer of this property executed every detail flawlessly, not only the public spaces, but the, hallways, floors and rooms as well. We noticed everything. We then headed up to the rooftop restaurant Cara Cara where we were greeting by the charming Dennis Yol. He spent time talking to us and making us feel so welcome. Gave us suggestions to the menu and told us how to approach the F&B venues at the hotel for our 36 hour stay... Cara Cara for lunch, cocktails during sunset at Cara Cara Bar, then down to Caldo Verde for dinner. Then back up to Cara Cara bar for nightcap...which we ended up not doing, as we had burned out from the fabulous dinner at Caldo Verde. And the morning breakfast back at Caldo Verde, was one of the best we have had. The vibe in both food venues was young, vibrant and happening. The food was suburb at lunch, dinner and next morning breakfast. Some notable staff members who we wanted to acknowledge at the property made our visit ever so memorable. We will definitely be back.
Dennis Vol - Director of F&B, Cara Cara, Bartenders Rafael and Jesus, Priscilla Lopez, GM of Caldo Verde and her entire team of professional servers. And departing the next morning was the charming Amber Tucker, Front Office Manager who thanked us for our stay and did everything she could to ensure our positive experience.
A BIG thank you to the hotel management team who have dotted all the I's and crossed all the T's to make this a very special destination property in Downtown Los Angeles. Great Work to all. Don't think twice about booking this property for a fulfilling and rejuvenating LA Experience.

The Downtown LA Proper Hotel is amazing! Two great restaurants, one on the rooftop with amazing views of DTLA. Food and service at both restaurants (other on the ground floor) were excellent. Very nice, small pool on the rooftop as well. The rooms have huge windows and the bathroom in particular is quite spacious including a huge shower. Very nice amenities and the styling of the hotel is very chic and comfy. Lots of great fabrics and colorful rooms. Will definitely be back!

Although Proper lacks some amenities that a 5-star hotel/resort might offer, we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay here. I write the following being extremely critical of hotels and have a pretty high standard to meet. (just being honest :P )

Amber was heading up the front desk, and although she was clearly overwhelmed with guests, and we were in a rush, her attitude and desire to help us get exactly what we needed was quite refreshing and a pleasant experience.

The entire staff, bell, front desk, concierge, and security that we were in contact with were polite, professional and friendly.

Even though the hotel is built on "old bones" it was clean, and very well designed. The interior design was quirky, seasonal, yet very inviting. The bed was soft and the pillows were satisfactory. The unique design gave you the feeling there was always something to see or check out and had us discussing the inspiration (I believe Kelly Wearstler) used to take an old building and make it so nice. It should be noted the hotel is in the heart of DTLA and we felt very secure in our room.

They allowed us to bring our small dog and they immediately brought up food bowls and a bed (in the past, we have had issues at even the finest hotels with having to bug the staff to promptly deliver these items to the room).

I recommend the corner premium suite if given the chance, as the guest rooms are pretty small - and they have some pretty cool unique
penthouse options as well. If your budget only allows for a guest room, then I recommend you at least get a Deluxe room (Deluxe in hotel lingo means it has a view/higher floor) and see the city sunrise from your bed.

I would stay here again and look forward to checking out the SF Proper.

Just okay and way overpriced. Service not great. Even though we paid for an upgraded room we were still looking at an alleyway full of trash.
The rooftop bar was nice, cool view. The bed was super comfortable. The room just felt cheaply redone, more bare than cozy and very small.
Gym had a nice selection of machines.
Room keys randomly stopped working, long line at front desk to get them reactivated and then the person behind me in line had the exact same issue.
Valet parking was a very, very long wait and still expensive.
Many sketchy characters roaming the streets directly outside the hotel, guests were asked by management to retreat to the sidewalk for safety.

We decided to stay in downtown Los Ángeles over the Christmas holiday. We picked “The Proper Hotel” over the close by chain hotels in the “Live” district. We are happy to report we LOVED this hotel. Although it’s location has not been completely gentrified, the historic hotel is designer beautiful. The lobby/ground floor restaurant is spectacular, the rooms are luxurious, and the rooftop has a cool outdoor restaurant, bar, and small pool with some of the best view of the downtown skyline. We had dinner twice at Cara Cara (rooftop restaurant) and the food was excellent. The drinks at the bar were good but expensive. I need to emphasize the views from the rooftop were just magical at night. If you’re looking to stay in Downtown Los Ángeles, The Proper Hotel should be at the top of your list. As a Titanium Lifetime Member, we were upgraded to a deluxe king room, on a high floor, with beautiful views. Also, valet parking was over $50 with a tip, but well worth it for the security purposes. Free coffee and tea is served each morning the lobby, but a room coffee maker is available upon request.

Im not a fan of downtown LA hotels but this was an experience. From my arrival at the valet to the amazing front desk. Checked into a beautiful room (could be bigger) but was defiantly a beautiful room. I called the front desk to inquire about what I can do around and spoke to an associate called Daniel, very charming young man he's a keeper! I always base my stays with the service housekeeping provide and they did not disappoint the charming cleaning lady I think she said Romaine was her name. I would like to point out that public restrooms when dining at the restaurant can be hard to find but a very helpful Miguel walked me to the bathroom as he found me wondering in the gym. You are all doing amazing here keep it up and as I read the other comments they are very spot on. I will be returning!

Dear Degc62, Thank you for reaching out with your inquiry! We were able to locate a few options that are nearby our Hotel, bit limited as most of them have not come back online as of yet. For hair, we recommend cuttothefeeling. They have 2 stylists that are able to take care of bridal or wedding hair. In regards to make-up, GlamSquad is a great option, mobile and able to come on site to our hotel. They offer make-up sessions & elegant upDos. We look forward to welcoming you soon and please reach out if we may be of any further assistance. Take care.
