Downtown Los Angeles is a busy metropolis of towering buildings, bustling streets, and industrial warehouses. There is a distinct multiplicity of cultures here with a growing influx of business professionals and hipsters. Many call the evolution of Downtown over recent years gentrification. New lofts, bars, hotels and restaurants are popping up regularly. Downtown is home to some of the very best restaurants in the city leading the LA foodie scene, plus it is the location of cultural and sports venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Staples Center, and the Coliseum at the University of Southern California.

More than pleasantly surprised with this boutique hotel that used to be the old Commercial Exchange Building built in 1924. Not your average hotel . . . clean, comfortable room, good bed, great shower head . . . minimalist decor and historically preserved architecture.

Stayed here for a conference I was attending at the LA convention center. It's super close and I trekked to the center twice. The breakfast is bssic but does it job. Whole Foods, Starbucks, dunking donuts etc are all within a stone throw. The decor of the hotel is super nice,

The main advantage of this hotel is a rooftop pool. It looks really great and gives an overlook to the LA’s skyline. As for the rooms - unless you’re staying in a king double, they would be rather hostel-style. We have booked a private quad with friends - the size of the room

Hi There! Thank you so much for staying with us and the lovely review! I couldn't agree more, the rooftop is quite special and a huge advantage. As far as the rooms, we do a have a couple different quad rooms, some being more spacious than others. The Hostel breakfast is for all guests who book the bunk bed in a shared room for either Quad, super 6 rooms or the super 8 rooms but unfortunately breakfast is not included if you book a private quad. We are so glad that you stayed with us and we will see you next time!

I'll just transcribe below the email I sent the property after my checkout (to which I never got a reply). Avoid at all costs. "Hi [manager], thanks for your message. I would really like to say that I had a good time at the Freehand, but this was definitely not the case.

I stayed in the hostel part - a 4 bed all female dorm so I can't comment on the hotel rooms. The dorm room was very clean but extremely small and dark (so were the halls). Really difficult to manage in such a small space and I had to use my phone as a flashlight more than once.

Hi There, Thank you very much for reaching out and providing such great feedback! I'm so glad that you enjoyed our lobby bar Rudolph's Bar & Tea as well as our restaurant The Commercial Exchange. Both are so delicious! I do apologize about Broken Shaker being too crowded, it does get quite popular on the weekends but happy to hear you were able to enjoy Rudolph's bar in the lobby. We hope to see you back soon and safe travels!
