The facility is situated in a thick pine forest at an elevation of 8,000 ft. Campers can see striking views of the rugged granite peaks surrounding it. The area is home to abundant wildlife, including black bear, mountain lions, mule deer, pine martin, pika and many species of fish and birds. This campground is especially prone to bear activity.

We stayed here the night before we hiked Mt. Whitney. We picked the campground purely based on it's convenient location to the trailhead (just about 1 mile away), so we were pleasantly surprised by how beautiful the campground was. It was pretty quiet when we were there (Thursday-Friday), except for the pleasant sound of the creek that runs through the campground. I imagine if you aren't planning to hike Whitney, then you may be disturbed by the people opening and closing their cars and driving out at very early hours, but everyone was also very courteous and tried to be as quiet as possible. Pit toilets kept extremely clean. Minimal interaction with the camp host, but he seemed nice. Some shorter trail options available right from the campground. There were also some awesome looking cabins at the campground. If you forget anything or want to skip cooking dinner one night, you can just drive a short ways up the road to the Whitney Portal Store.

Hello. I'm writing to share the pros and cons of this camp. First, the good! 1) Clean restrooms. Second, lovely area. However, I've thought about this a lot and I need to share some opinions regarding your host. We arrived and quickly found a spot. Our child took the park envelope to the host - he misunderstood when I told him to put it"in the box". Your host has a firewood payment box. As my child approached the hosts site, there was a misunderstanding of sorts. Son asked if the box was right for paying and host said nothing . Host said "no...unless you want firewood", but didn't point him to the correct box. My sister and her family arrived. Her son fell ill. Later, she approached the host site to see him engaged in conversation with someone (despite the "off duty" sign). I said I was sorry to bother and he replied, "Are you? Did you see the sign.". I said, " I just want to say we are leaving and our spot is free. ". He said, "and...?". My sister asked for a refund and he dismissed her, saying she's have to go online and request a refund but he didn't say where or how. He was very rude! I heard my sister apologize again and the host responded with "but, you're not really.". Talking with others in the camp ground, we learned this was his normal demeanor and that he disappears for large parts of the day. After my sister left, we stayed another two nights. The next morning, we noted that a bear had found trash o. the host cart and tore it apart. Why is a host violating the rules about refuse and endangering the bear and people nearby?

Area is absolutely beautiful. Drive is easy, just 20 minutes off the 395 North. Campsites are all full of trees, lots of shade. You can hear the rush of Whitney creek even when you're not right next to it. We stayed in the first site you come to as you drive into the campgrund--site 42. It was a Wed. in August and no one was in the sites around us. Even with use of bear box and keeping food within arms reach, bear came within 2-3 feet of my friend and took our food. Bear would not be scared away even with yelling and rocks being thrown. We went to find campground host, and the sign on the door said: Don't knock for bears. I can do nothing. In the morning, had conversation with host and he said bear encounters were happening every single day. Would not tent camp there again. If you do, keep low scented food in your hands, finish food before dark, and be very careful.
