We spent 5 days over the holidays and it was our 2nd time. Very quiet room (which is #45) and incredible view from our room and deck. We stayed in Room 49 last year and it was great too. The staff were awesome and enjoyed having a bar/restaurant on site.

I hesitate to give four stars, not five, because this place was wonderful and I'd go back in a heartbeat. The grounds and location are amazing, the room's views were great, and the restaurant/lounge served really nice and good food. It seemed though that there needed to be some attention to detail perhaps at a faster pace than they are currently doing, though. The matress is, as others have noted, a problem - it's a thick pad, not a matress. Our hot water wasn't working - it was promptly fixed, but that's something that housekeeping should ensure works before we check in. The phones didn't work, which they resolved by having a front desk cell number for you to call. Thankfully, my husband's sprint service worked. My AT&T service did not, so this work around, had we not had his phone, would have been useless. Again, not huge issues - but I'd recommend checking your room usage yourself upon check in so that any issues can be immediately addressed... and if you have a bad back, you might prefer another location. Also, if you are thrown off by dogs - this is a VERY dog friendly place. I love dogs but it was odd to see them on the sofa with their owners in the lounge while people are eating and drinking! I would love to come back with my dog, but if you're the type of person who would not like that, you should know that dogs are all over the place and are guests here too.

My wife and I have been visiting Mendocino for decades. We have typically stayed at Little River or nearby properties. I had never stayed at HH. Last time I had looked it was pretty pricey. It has changed ownership and the room rate is now on par with other nearby properties. My daughter selected HH for her wedding. We visited for a food tasting and left asking "why haven't we been staying here?". A month later my wife was diagnosed with cancer. I started looking for a place for her to recover after surgery and chemo. She wanted to be by the ocean and have views and easy access to good food. HH was a God send. We usually came up mid week so rates were good. The staff was unbelievably kind and supportive. The rooms were great and the views could not be beat. When my wife was up for it we could walk parts of the 30 acres. Once we ventured down to adjacent Dark Gulch Beach. She loved the salmon for dinner. We visited a half dozen times between March and October. A moment to address critics in the other reviews. The lack of screens on the sliders is a damned if you do (block the view) damned if you don't (ventilation challenge). It's Mendo. Most days and nights are cool. Sometimes we just left the slider open a little, no big deal. There are a couple of "rotten" buildings. It's the legacy of the recession. The property sat idle for a number of years. A few buildings are not used pending reconstruction. Every month we visited, more work was being done on the gardens and buildings. Again no big deal, they are moving in the right direction. Otherwise, the rooms and property are great! We enjoyed the Deerfield side of the property when we were able to bring our dog. My wife is now in remission. Just in time for my daughter's October wedding! What a venue! The ceremony was on the bluff with the coast as a backdrop. The reception was on-site. We had a sit down for around 100 guests. Around 5:30 PG&E shut off the power (fire danger). The staff was prepared. The dinner and reception proceeded by candlelight (there was a generator for the kitchen and entertainment). The staff made it feel like the candlelight dinner was part of the plan. Dinner and service was excellent. It could not have been more beautiful! Our guests loved the property and wedding. We are celebrating our 30th anniversary in a couple of weeks. Given how precious time has become, I told my wife I would take her anywhere. There is only one place that she wanted to be. If you need a place to slow down, quiet your mind and restore your body and spirit, HH is the place. If you do, look for a couple playing scrabble at a window table in the bar. Say Hi! First round is on me.

We were able to find this hotel on Hotel's Tonight on our drive exploring up the coast. We ended up staying an additional night due to our love of this property, beach access, delicious and beautiful restaurant and bar with beautiful ocean view. Would highly recommend this hotel.
