I’ve been coming to Heritage House for 30+ years - and it still remains my happy place. Sarah Custer and Max Leal made me feel so welcome upon my arrival and gave me good suggestions of places to see that I had not been. This property is so very special and I will continue to stay here when I need a getaway to recharge and get away from the noise of the world.

We booked the Heritage House about 2-month before our arrival. For three weeks leading up to our arrival and on the day we were to be there, Northern California experienced Category 4 atmospheric river storms causing flooding, downed powerlines and power outages. The California Highway Patrol requested drivers to stay off the roads. Anticipating dangerous road conditions, we tried to reach the Heritage House to change our reservation to the following week when torrential rain was not predicted. It was impossible to reach the Heritage House directly by telephone. Finally, through a reservation service, we requested that our reservation be changed. The clerk who answered the telephone could not make a decision so referred the matter to the “Manager”. After two days, we received an e-mail (not a telephone call) stating that it would be impossible to change our reservation because the hotel was “… fully booked …” the next week. (During our stay, we saw only three cabins that were occupied!) Rather than loose our considerable deposit, and hoping for the best, we braved a horrible, pounding rainstorm to drive from San Rafael, California to the Heritage House. Route 126, the most direct route from Highway 101 was closed because of flooding. We were re-directed north to Route 20 from Willits. Route 20 rivals the Burma Road, exacerbated by pounding rain and water cascading across the road. We managed driving Route 20 and the additional 40+ miles on Route I to the Heritage House. When we arrived in the rain, we were exhausted by the drive. The reception staff barely looked up. There were no welcoming remarks or inquiries about our drive or the horrible weather. The clerk simply gave us the key and showed us a map to guide our drive to our lodging. We slowly wound around deeply rutted roads to find our cabin. The road is poorly signed resulting in a number of wrong turns. Our lodging had been renovated and had a wonderful view of the roiling Pacific Ocean pounding on the rocks. The room was comfortable but was sparse. There was no welcoming note or gift. There were no instructions for the gas fireplace, so we called the front desk. We were told to turn the thermostat to the highest setting and the fireplace would come on. We did; the fireplace did not light. We called again. This time a young man came in about 15-minutes. The fireplace had a switch and was not controlled by the thermostat. The day after our arrival, we ventured to the dining room, open only for breakfast. We occupied one of two tables. The waitress was crusty, but efficient. We ordered eggs benedict. The breakfast was inedible … the hollandaise sauce was orange, without flavor, and likely came from a can. The dining room, while offering a fabulous view, was so cold that we kept on our coats. On the way out, we informed the reception that the outside light on our cabin was out. She promised a quick repair. After asking two additional times, the light remained dark during our entire stay. The management of the Heritage House was totally insensitive to the horrible weather that could endanger the lives of guests. Warm hospitality would have made a difference in our stay, but was completely lacking. Given the limited occupancy during our stay, I found it difficult to believe that the hotel was “… fully booked …” the next week and there could be no flexibility in our reservation date. The management of the Heritage House put profit ahead of guest safety. I write this with the intention of causing management of The Heritage House to be responsive to guests’ issues and to make them aware that because of the total lack of hospitality we will not return.

We arrived here late on a Sunday December evening in the dark with no reservation after way too long of a drive. We were lucky enough to have Riley at the front desk find us the perfect room even with no notice of our arrival. The rooms are so well thought out and the decoration and amenities were perfect. The location was even more beautiful when we woke up to find ourselves right on the coast with a spectacular ocean view. The manager, Sarah is so helpful and professional and all the staff here are top notch. The restaurant/ bar was great food and service at both dinner and breakfast. We enjoyed the whole experience so much, that we ended up staying an extra night. We highly recommend a stay here and we will definitely be back at the first opportunity!

We came here to celebrate our birthdays and see if the updated Heritage House was worth the price. Our last visit was about 20 years ago and the place had run down. On this trip we were very pleased with the room and service. Our room was upgraded to a partial ocean view. The time of year meant there were few guests and we felt like we had the place to ourselves. The room amenities were thoughtful, and the service was attentive. When the receptionist learned we both had birthdays she gave us a bottle of wine and bottle of sparkling cider. We paid more for a fireplace and that was one small disappointment, as the fire only burned at a low flame and wasn't as romantic as we'd hoped. Everything else was great, and it helped that we enjoyed beautiful weather even though it was chilly. We will definitely come again.

We booked a room with two beds which did not match at all what was in the photograph. We ended up in Room 8. Rooms 6, 7 and 8 seem to be a prefab modular unit that can be reconfigured into a variety of rooms depending on the needs. Two doors in our unit were locked. When one enters Room 8, a bed is right inside the door. Another door in the bedroom led to a long hallway with a bathroom and a second bedroom. The second bedroom had two chairs pushed up against the end of the bed, that faced a fireplace that didn’t work. In the hallway, a narrow counter held a Keurig coffeemaker, microwave and dorm fridge, with coffee mugs and wine glasses, but with no sink, utensils or plates available. The oddest thing was this modular wall door that separated our room from Room 7. I could see light from the adjacent room coming through at the top and bottom, when staff were in there a day before we left. I mentioned this to staff at the desk and was told to take it up with staff when we checked out. On our last night in Room 8, I could hear every single word the staff said giving the guests directions on the use of the room. When the staff left, the guests continued conversation and it was obvious that they and we had no privacy. I went next door and told the guests that we could hear every word they were saying in case they were expecting some privacy in their living area. We never ate in the restaurant, however we walked the grounds which were beautiful despite some type of animal that is digging up the dirt. We walked the length of the perimeter of ocean overlook and it took about 30 minutes. Access to the beach was adventurous, after passing the “access at your own risk” sign. Views of the ocean from a deck were great, but mostly because no one was staying in the room next to us. However there are a lot of chaises located on the property that overlook the water. I can see how some people with a different room might have a wonderful stay. If you book a room, make sure to ask specific questions about the room, the layout, the view, etc before assuming you are going to get what you see in the photos. Upon leaving, I again commented on my displeasure of our room. The women had no knowledge of any problem but did provide up with a less than generous $200 off our bill.

This hotel has a beautiful view but the room was very dated. You have to get ice from the front desk. No refrigerator in our room. We had to haul suitcases up 24 steps. Ugh. Breakfast was not included, not cheap but tasty. They do offer a bottle of wine at check in. Grounds needed some help. This is not worth the money.

Dear Kim1084, We do appreciate your feedback and apologize for not exceeding expectations, as we strive to with every guest. All guest rooms are equipped with a microwave, Keurig coffee maker and a refrigerator. We are happy to deliver ice and any other requested items. Despite staffing challenges following Covid, as well as our on-going drought, our landscapers are hard at work on our 37 acres of property. We hope you will return in the future and allow us a chance to regain your trust.

I would give a 0 star if I can. Thanks for ruining our babymoon. My husband and I booked the place for 3 nights and had to end our trip early because of the extremely POOR experience. 1. the room we got had a strong chemical + woody smell (I started having headache on day 3 and decided to cancel the rest of the trip and head home). The smell of furniture and the headboard were so bad that we had to move the table in our room outside to the patio. but the headboard was unmovable and due to the smell, I couldn't sleep well. My husband comforted me that it probably was just normal smell from old furniture. However on day 3, I couldn't bear it anymore so I went to the front desk asking whether the room was recently renovated. TURNED OUT YES! THE ROOM WALL AND THE FURNITURE IN THE ROOM WERE PAINTED A WEEK AGO. and the headboard was also new and according to them, it has been in the storage for years and recently unpacked to use. I was so pissed because I'm currently pregnant and the chemical fume can be really bad for the baby. I cannot believe that for a 4 star hotel like this, they think this kind of room is ready to have people stay in it, especially pregnant women. 2. The general manager and the maintenance people are NOT helpful at all. The general manager said sorry multiple times but I don't think he was really listening and caring. I tried to explain the problem of the headboard to him and after 2 minutes, he said 'sorry what?'. what's funnier is that after this, we all went to the room and I pointed out the bad smell from the headboard in front of them. The general manager just smiled at me and did nothing. I asked them to smell themselves and the maintenance poeple did it. You know what he said? I forgot exactly how he said it but basically, he said I don't smell well and the headboard is new. COME ON!!!! maybe that's the reason you put bad-smelly furniture into the room without realizing it. 3. They switched us to another room because of this. If you booked a full ocean view room and get this one, I would then say you are really unlucky. The 2nd room we got was in a much poorer position and we can only see part of the ocean and the remaining view you can see is the wall of the neighbor's room. I was completely not in the mood of continuing the trip after this happened and also as I mentioned, I started feeling not well. We decided to leave this terrible place and head back home. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!

The Heritage House Resort nestles among the trees and on the cliffs overlooking the beautiful Pacific ocean. Our family stayed in the three bedroom Redwood cottage which was very spacious and clean. The water pressure in the showers was very low though and shower heads low so we had to bend a little to shower. We’re not particularly tall people. The water runs cold too if a toilet is flushed. It’s a little but easy walk to the main hotel but very secluded and peaceful. The hotel is nice and the staff pleasant. Another huge shoutout for Peach from us too who made our breakfast experience every day perfect. Dinner was nice each night too although eating in the bar area is very dark and we’d prefer to be in the lighter dining area. Our children loved the chess and chequer boards at dinner though. Johnny the guitar player was joyful. We also loved the delicious Seebass Family Wines on offer and would recommend a visit to their fabulous tasting rooms. Overall the hotel does feel a little tired though and perhaps still suffering post Covid. We asked for housekeeping and were told they weren’t able to clean the rooms as they were too busy with a wedding party. They did send clean towels to our room and left them on the doorstep which is a partial solution. Nonetheless we didn’t think it was quite good enough given it’s our holiday too and prices aren’t cheap here. We also made up a bed ourselves on the first evening as Housekeeping weren’t around. By no means a big problem but just a comment. Overall this is a nice hotel in a beautifully secluded spot, Peach is wonderful and food good. With a few tweaks it could be a lot better.

We live in NorCal but rarely visit the north coast. Don’t know why. The coast is beautiful! Heritage House is first class and charming, right on the water with views of rugged cliffs. Minutes from the town Mendocino. The staff is numerous (a treat these days when everyone seems short-staffed), efficient, and friendly. Special shout out to Peach, who seems to be everywhere at once. A drive up the coast is well rewarded, though I’d drive back via Boonville, as being on the outside lane (driving south) is terrifying. If not terrifying, at least not relaxing. :-)
