Let me start with the positive.... we have always loved our stays at this Inn. So much so, that we got married there! We loved everything about it; the accomodations, the setting, ability to bring our pups, private beach access, the happy hour, the breakfast, and the hottub! We are not sure what happened since we last stayed 5 years ago; possibly a change of ownership, maybe the pandemic. We found little to be happy with during out latest stay. We booked the Water Tower because it sounded great, we had never stayed there, and the private hottub was appealing. Now, for the bad. There was mold on the windows and ceiling, very old laminate floor was peeling up, the room smelled of mold, floors were discustingly dirty (had to cover some spots with a towel to avoid stepping in it), chairs provided were more like uncomfortable office chairs, only one bedside table, no robes as shown in the pictures, no plush towels, no comfy couch, the shower enclosure was rotting and falling apart, and the plumbing leaked. The cover to the hottub is also falling apart and the smell of chlorine coming from the tub was so strong we would not get in it. There is no one onsight to assist! We ended up texting pictures, complaints, and a request to change rooms to the person who booked our stay but had no response. The next day my wife found him in the office. He told her he received the text when we sent it but did not respond. He called the accomodations “rustic.” He reluctantly changed our room to the Cypress which was way better, but still very tired. He mentioned a price adjustment but did not provide one until pressured, and it was minimal. We had invited our best friends to join us during our stay and were completely embarrased for doing so. The Inn at Schoolhouse Beach needs serious remodeling help yes, but at least clean properly! IMO this place is NOT worth the amount of money they charge to stay there.

Response from Kevin Fleming, Owner at Inn at Schoolhouse Creek

Because this review was left on multiple platforms for the same stay, I will copy and paste as well: "Thank your for review. Our on site manager is available for non emergency requests until 5 pm daily. We do our best to help each of our guests with their needs but are unable to guarantee non emergency requests late at night, per our confirmation email and in room information. Our hot tubs are treated with bromine and our listings and confirmations mention all amenities given and items that need to be requested. After many communications, viewing multiple accommodations before choosing the Cypress Cottage, and a substantial discount for your first night, we had hoped we had satisfied your needs. We do have new owners and planning many upgrades throughout the property. Thank you for pointing out the things that the Water Tower Cottage needs."

We stayed her for the 3rd time over the past 7 years this past October. Prior to writing this review I attempted to communicate with the owner of the inn, but after numerous requests I was not given their name, nor contact info to do so. This inn has gone downhill. It's almost as if it has been abandoned. They advertise a spa, restaurant and hot tub on the property. None exist. The "dry spa" is a canvas tent that is empty and has mold and weeds growing on the walls. The hot-tub has been broken down for years. Our room did not even remotely look like the room they advertised on their web-site. Upon arrival, we noticed that the blinds on the front door did not close, which prevented any privacy as the stairs/landing is shared by adjoining rooms. When asked about repairing the blinds we were told they would send someone. They never did, however they later acknowledged in an email response that they were aware they had been broken for some time and chose to never replace them. Once you check-in, there is absolutely no way to contact anyone. The number they ask you to message through What's App doesn't work. There are no phones in the rooms (recently removed) to enable you to contact front desk or call out in an emergency. There is basically no cell-service. Our room needed so many cosmetic and much needed repairs. the dirt on the window sills was disgusting. The room was extremely hot, but the AC didn't work. The tub/jacuzzi in the room is non-functional as it apparently leaks all over the room. There were pieces missing from the faucets, broken pieces of wood, as well as scratches and stains on almost all of the wood. They removed the table outside the room, so there was no place (as shown on their web-site) to enjoy a snack on the balcony. There's no daily cleaning of the room, and you are only given one towel to last your stay, with no way to contact the front desk (no body was in the front office each time we attempted to contact them). We talked to other guests who complained about the lack of advertised facilities/amenities as well as severe problems with ants all over their room and broken blinds and no way to have privacy in their rooms. I wanted to discuss all of our concerns prior to posting a review, however on my first attempt I received a short e-mail basically saying that they understand our disappointment and hope to refurbish the inn one day. The person responding refused to provide the name/contact info of the owner of the inn. I felt that the person replying didn't really care and never did reply to my 2 follow-up emails. It's as if no-one really cares about his inn and they really don't care what people think. I hope they update their web-site to accurately reflect what you're getting. You're certainly not getting what you pay for. Sadly, I DEFINATELY would not recommend staying here until a complete overhaul of the property is done. Should you decide to stay, just beware that it's impossible to contact anyone once you check in. And in the event you do, don't expect them to follow-up on or actually follow through on any request you may have.

Thank you for your review. We’re very sorry that you were disappointed with your stay. We do hope that you decide to give us another try in the future as our community hot tub and sauna are being renovated and our rooms and cottages are getting many upgrades. With the wet winter that we’ve had, we’re also hopeful that we will be able to provide more linens upon check in as we weren’t able to do so through such a bad drought. When booking so close to an arrival date, inventory can be limited. The Whale Watch room was the last one available at the time of your booking and after double checking its online description on our website, it is accurate. We’re sorry for any confusion and will do our best to clarify the Captains Watch description and photos compared to the Whale Watch room. Thank you again for your feedback.

The Inn is a great place for dogs. Unfortunately not as accommodating for humans. We arrived on Friday and stashed our refrigerated goods. By that evening I noticed that everything was still cool to warm. I notified manager in morning about possible broken refrigerator. By evening - nothing in response so I reached out as our food was warm. He apologized that refrigerator was broken but couldn't get another until Monday. I had hoped he would provide at least a cooler with ice for our drinks or move us to another room. We also felt that because the room was specifically dog friendly that many items had been cleared out - no rugs, no extra linens, minimal furnishings. Our dog had a good time only sorry we couldn't say the same!

It saddens me to write this since we’ve had such a different experience here in the past. During our last stay 3 weeks ago to celebrate my birthday we had to share our cottage with an ant infestation we were not told about in advance. The worst part was slapping them off our body, and taking them out of our ears and off our face while trying to sleep. The cottage was dirty and moldy, it was falling apart- very neglected. We didn’t get shampoo and even though we were the only ones with access to a hot tub, we didn’t get robes. We ended up looking for someone on my birthday, and since we couldn’t find anyone, we drove back home losing out on almost 2 days’ worth of lodging. I wrote to the housekeeping number and no one wrote back to say anything. To this day, I haven’t heard from anyone. Looks like they only cared to take our money. We’ll take our loyalty somewhere else.

Hello Morticia, thank you for your review, we are very sorry that this happened. We have checked all of our reservations and text communications since the beginning of July through to today and could not seem to find your name or text correspondents in any of our systems. We do our very best to be available to all of our guests when they need us and wanted to be sure you meant to write this review for us as well as use it as a teaching moment for our team to improve. All of our rooms and cottages are supplied with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in large dispensers in all of the showers. We no longer provide robes unless requested because we are on a well and water is scarce this time of year. We do wish you the best and hope that your next birthday is a very happy one.

My bf and I stayed here in the Pomo Cottage last week. We loved it! Yes, the floor is has a slant to it. We found that to be part of its charm. It was spacious, the hot tub was legit and the yard was perfect if you have pets. The bottle of wine and handwritten note upon arrival. Was a thoughtful touch. We would highly recommend to anyone who’s looking for a rustic/spacious accommodation for a getaway. I’ve read some reviews where people have taken photos of minor imperfections. Honestly, if you’ve ever been to the Mendocino area. Most of the Bnbs and restaurants are rustic. That’s part of the charm. It’s a beautiful area that’s imperfect and unpretentious. That’s what we love about it. The small town vibe. We would definitely stay here again. Perfect spot for a romantic getaway. And you can bring your pups! They have a large grassy area for them. In addition to the small fenced in yard in the Pomo Cottage.

We made a last minute decision to go to Mendocino area between Christmas and NY and were lucky enough to find two rooms here. Staff were very kind during the booking process and stay there. Both rooms were clean, spacious and really charming. One room had a full kitchen with everything you need. Beds were clean and comfortable. We walked around the property, which is really beautiful. You can see the ocean from many places! It was raining and we spent a lot of time inside and enjoyed the charm. Will definitely go back!

I really enjoyed my stay at the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek! This property was just gorgeous, meticulously maintained and my favorite part of my stay was the winding hidden creek that runs the length of the property. My dog and I traversed it may times in the two days we visited and it's filled with beautiful ferns and a trickling stream. I stayed in the Garden Cottage with my dog and it was the perfect little getaway for us. The french doors open onto a private deck surrounded completely by nature, the perfect spot for our lunches and just to relax. At night the gas fireplace offered very nice ambiance and the bed was very comfy. They left directions to the dog beach for us and it was very easy to find, in fact we visited no less than 5 beaches nearby that were all dog friendly - definitely the highlight of our short stay. I also wanted to thank them for making it so easy to communicate with the innkeeper through text messaging for anything I needed, that was so appreciated. I would like to give 5 stars but I have to dock 1 for price... For one person for two nights at over $500 was steep for a Monday/Tuesday stay, especially when it does not include the breakfast they used to. I think they could revisit their pricing based on the area seeing as I had to drive over 20 mins to Fort Bragg to get any kind of real meal. I got a large meal that I could split over two nights because I was travleling from afar without groceries and it seemed silly to continue driving 40+ mins round trip just to eat. Additionally, and this doesn't affect their rating because it's beyond their control, but Mendocino has very few spots open all week long to eat too. Pay attention to the fact that several restaurants are on a 3 or 4 day open schedule and odd hours when you plan your trip. I have recommended this place to many of my friends and the Garden Cottage would be a perfect little romantic spot for a couple or solo traveler.

I wanted to love this place. I always try to support small/local owned businesses - the experience is usually more personal and thoughtful. That was ... kind of the case with this place, but for $250+ per night, I'm sorry to report that the Inn is just not worth it. It had some pluses but too many minuses. We stayed in the Cypress Cottage. Positive: - the bed was super comfortable and felt clean and luxurious. Definitely the best bnb/inn bed I've slept on in a long time. - the pet details are so nice. we were provided a comfortable pet bed which our cat loved, food and water bowls, treats, and bags. - coffee/tea/small wine was provided - it was nice to have our own cottage/space and the location was great. - check in was smooth! Cons - frankly, I just wish they would have lowered their prices and all of this feedback would be... kind of OK. - due to COVID (?) the restaurant and hot tub are closed. - Price, I think we paid around $270/night - that's ridiculous for the state the cottage was in - ant invasion! Twice in our 2 day trip we had an invasion of ants, luckily we brought our hand held Dyson and lysol wipes so we were able to take care of them, but even when we flagged it to the staff, no one helped us... - floor - the floor was a fake vinyl wood that was totally water damaged and ripped apart so that you could see the underlying material. Several times we tripped on it and frankly it was gross!!! We didn't dare walk around in our bare feet inside the cottage at all. the floor in the bathroom was also vinyl and grimy - do not expect to relax in the bathroom at all. I would not have used the tub. - everything was old and wonky, the mirror was bursting at the sides and there were cleaning streaks on it, the facets were from 1995 and the kitchen was falling apart. The burners were totally at an angle and the cookware hadn't been thoroughly cleaned - we found a left over onion on one of the pans, yuck! - the bedskirt had a reddish orange stain or marks on it at the bottom, I assume this was just stained but actually clean?? - kitchen was not equipped. None of the items had any thought behind them. For example, there was a pasta spoon but no pot big enough to make pasta and no strainer. There were salad tongs but no bowl big enough to make salad. - communication - they text you, but when you arrive there is no service and they recommend using WhatsApp to communicate but then they aren't on it?? So... in the end you can't communicate in real time! Overall, I just wish they would either drop the price or renovate the place. There are better options in the area - I would encourage you to look elsewhere until they renovate the place.

We spent 2 nights in the Thyme Cottage. This separate unit was extremely quiet and comfortable. A Dog-friendly place that provided dog dishes and bed. The property is bordered by woods and a creek. Unfortunately, the small onsite restaurant was closed due to the departure of the chef. Still, the best stay of our California Coast road trip.

We had stayed at Inn at Schoolhouse Creek couple years ago and found the place to be excellent. We were hoping for a similar experience this time as well, however, we were a little disappointed. We stayed at the Anderson Valley room. We found the bathroom was not properly cleaned upon checkin. Also, the exhaust fan in the bathroom too was not working. It was also a little disappointing to know that they don't serve breakfast here anymore as well. All in all, the location is very convenient. Hopefully they improve things a bit and get back to being a great place to stay once again.
