"One of the 10 best inns in America", this stylish Federalist-designed Inn & farmstead and the accompanying modern Spa Lodge with its European-inspired 10 rooms offer something for everyone. With the Inn's historic architecture and weathered redwood outbuildings juxtaposed with the Lodge's bright European styling Glendeven offers an experience unlike any other area resort, hotel, or inn stay. The spa, wood burning fireplaces, ocean views, full in-room gourmet breakfasts, grazing llamas and free ranging chickens, private baths, secluded patios & decks, plush robes, private and outdoor jetted hot-tubs, a wine and hors d'oeuvres hour, acres of manicured gardens and forested trails, and free-Wi-Fi and many other amenities to discover are sure to please. Glendeven is a highly rated inn set on a serene 15-acre farmstead around an 1867 country estate and an accompanying modern lodge situated on a headland meadow with grazing llamas, just minutes south of historic Mendocino.

We spent three nights here while visiting Mendocino and neighboring areas, and had an absolutely terrific time. The room (Bayloft) was beautiful and very large, with a view of the ocean. Breakfast delivered in a basket every morning was a real treat. Well located, with access to the beach down a trail from across the road. For the more adventurous, you can even hike into Van Damme State Park directly from the property. Would absolutely stay here again if we were in the area.

During a West Coast road trip, my husband and I spent a night in Room 201 of the modern Glendeven Lodge. Our stay was wonderful and very peaceful. We loved getting to explore the grounds, to include feeding the chickens & visiting the llamas. And, the provided breakfast was delicious! I still think fondly of the lemon poppyseed muffin that came with breakfast. We would happily stay here again if in the area.

It is uncomfortable for me to write a negative review like this, but I can’t imagine we’re the only people who’ve had such a horrible experience. We chose to stay at Glendeven because of the phenomenal TripAdvisor reviews and were looking forward to it. A week before our stay, I emailed the Inn to request staying an extra night. Although rooms were available, we were told we had to stay TWO more nights, and could not stay just one additional night. I responded kindly, but stating my disappointment with how unwilling they were to be accommodating. We felt unwelcome before we’d even arrived. They replied, without acknowledging my email, to say a different room was now available for the 3 nights if we wanted to change, and I gladly accepted. No pricing was discussed in the email, and can’t be found online, either. I had assumed a rate increase, but did not expect $100/ night more. I think a reservation change that costs a guest 70% more overall should be communicated clearly (or at least just communicated). Feeling taken for a ride, my partner called to discuss the situation, leaving a message with the front desk. Four minutes later we got an email canceling our entire stay. Later that day my partner got a call from John, the owner. He was “just calling to make sure we received the cancellation notice”, also mentioning we wouldn’t have been a good fit for them. We are respectful and thoughtful people and hope to be treated likewise. It’s now 24 hours before we are supposed to be in Mendocino and finding a new accommodation in the area is most likely impossible.

Dear Future Guests, this account of what happened is almost exactly correct, but does not include the communications we received from these potential guests. It was after receiving a final email that said in part, "We are extremely disappointed with service before arriving, and hope our stay is not going to be a huge letdown, and that you indeed meet our extremely high expectations" that we decided these folks would just simply be happier elsewhere. The decision was confirmed by their threats of “letting everyone know about their terrible experience” and wishing us luck in our business “because we will need it”. Sometimes it is best to know when to walk away. In almost 15 years, this is the only time we have ever felt the need to cancel a guest for their behavior before they arrived. In the end there wasn't a scenario that we could imagine -- after receiving their emails and phone calls -- where having them here was going to be pleasant for them or anyone involved. So without penalty two days before arrival their reservation was released and they were asked to find other accommodations that may suit their needs. We may not be able to resell their room and recoup the loss, but that is a chance we were willing to take. A courtesy call was placed as well. So Dear Future Guests, please know that this is a beautiful place with lovely people working hard to ensure you have the best experience possible during your time on the Mendocino Coast. We love our guests, and do everything we’re able for them and will do the same for you when we see you. If ever you have any questions about our rooms as you make your plans, please let us know. We love to answer questions.

After strenuous hiking at Yosemite and vineyard hopping in Napa, it was great to finally wind down at Glendeven. Upon checking in my wife and I were given cookies, chicken feed (!!), and a bottle of wine. We stayed in the Eastlin room which has a cute patio that faces the Llama pasture. Each morning breakfast is delivered to the said patio at 9 am. We had three varying breakfasts each of them fantastic. One basket had a lemon poppyseed muffin and it was to die for. In the evening after exploring the area (do the skunk train!) We'd have drinks on the patio observing the llamas. Two of the nights there were multiple owls. You can hear the ocean. It's so relaxing. The bed is large and while softer than I like still incredibly comfortable. The room also had other thoughtful touches like an ironing board with iron and an oscillating fan. While it lacks a television you'll be plenty entertained by the decades worth of stories previous guests left in the notebooks or just hanging out by the fireplace and on the patio. There has been one Inn that I've thought about for multiple years and it's Die Haslachmuhle in Salzburg, Austria. Where my wife and I spent part of our honeymoon. It's the place I always dream of going to. Glendeven not only gave me that same feeling but also surpassed it.

We stayed at the Glendeven Inn for three nights to celebrate our 3-year anniversary. We had a wonderful time strolling the grounds, staying cozy by the fire, relaxing, and enjoying the delicious breakfasts that were brought to our room each morning. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable with very soft sheets. The inn is very close to downtown Mendocino and the views are beautiful. We would stay here again!
