We love to stay in places that are quirky and different and what’s not to like about a haunted castle?! We arrived on a grey day and the castle certainly looked pretty gloomy. The public rooms are unusual and cluttered and added to the despondent atmosphere. I was actually pleased that we didn’t have to go through them to get to our apartment! We stayed in the Guards Room. It was a one bedroom character apartment with a good size living room. The location is fantastic. Chillingham is in the middle of nowhere and very peaceful. The staff in the castle were friendly. Also, even though there was no telephone contact because of Covid they were very responsive and helpful by email and kept us informed in advance of various road closures in the area. We had a good lunch in the tea-room and they were very Covid aware. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. However, we would say that the apartment was “oversold” on the website using what must be old pictures. In reality it was more basic than we’d envisaged and the kitchen and bathroom areas in particular could do with some refurbishment. …
Beautiful grounds and rooms, but we got little sleep because of all the strange noises, particularly the relentless banging of doors between 1:00am and 4:00am: I counted a minimum of 13 loud bangs. There were also dragging sounds and the sound of someone walking in the apt above us. There couldn't have been anyone in the apt because we had the keys to both apts: Chillingham had mistakenly booked us both the Grey AND the Lookout for the same night. No one was in the Lookout while we stayed in the Grey, but it sounded like it. The distant sound of adult and children's voice was very off-putting as well. I wasn't expecting weird experiences, but I got them. I don't know that I'd have the courage to stay again. A beautiful, yet eerie place to stay. 👻 🧟♀️ 👻 🧟♀️
Well, what a beautiful castle. Arrived and although shocked by the expensive entrance fee, we were enthralled by the stunning exterior building and grounds. On entry however, there was no details about what we were seeing and so we entered blindly, as there was no signal to research the location or the history/ ‘ghostly’ background... there was no access to a single brochure (despite the expensive entry). There didn’t seem to be a lot of cohesion in the various rooms, no natural progression and everything was filthy. The rooms were chaotic with beautiful items lost in the mess (a bath once owned by Mick Jagger full of wine glasses, on the other side of a large room...?) Beautiful from the outside only I’m afraid, still have no clue about the history of the castle and grounds, not worth the entry fee. I question the relevance of an Eton school uniform in the mix of it all- narcissism of the owner perhaps?…
On our holiday last week, we decided to visit Chillingham Castle again on a very windy day. All the Covid guidelines were being observed (one-way systems, sanitisation stations, etc), and we had a lovely walk round seeing all the interesting artefacts and reading the comments and anecdotes from Sir Humphrey! It isn't at all commercial, and it's very homely. We had a lovely lunch in the tearoom, where there is a huge log fire. We then went round the very well-kept gardens, which are obviously looking Autumnal, but still very colourful. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
Just come back from visiting Chillingham castle absolute waste of money loads of old artefacts with no purpose, dirty, no atmosphere, no explanation of anything, £2.50 for a stapled together A4 sheets of info on castle. Follow others advice on trip advisor give it a miss very disappointing.
