This was an incredibly disappointing experience. We have friends that recently moved to Laguna Beach and were hoping to make Surf and Sand our monthly weekend getaway when visiting them from LA. While the staff was very polite, there were several issues. 1. I requested a crib for my toddler 3 times— at the time I made the reservation, when we checked in, and when the bellman brought our luggage. All times we were told “of course, we will bring it” When we got back around 8pm with a daughter that had fallen asleep in the car, there was still no crib. At this point, bringing in a crib would have been disruptive and loud. Our 15 mo old daughter had to sleep between us in a queen bed 2. We were aware we were booking a room at a “discounted rate” (still $600) because of no direct oceanview. The person making the reservation told us if we planned to be out enjoying the beach etc, this would not be a big deal. I said yes we have a toddler so will be in room asleep by 7-8. What was not mentioned was that there would be wedding party/reception near our room with loud noise until after midnight. Frankly— I went home on Sunday completely exhausted. This was far from the restful weekend getaway I imagined. Lastly— the beach at the hotel is narrow and unless tide is quite low not really accessible. This was also not made clear. If you have small children and are looking for easy access to the beach, not your place The management credited back $100 for the crib issue. But that is just not enough to have us try It again

Hotel's Favorite
I just wanted to take a few minutes of your time to tell you about our recent experience with your magnificent hotel and staff. Just a quick background…I’m a former F&B Director at La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla, Rancho Valencia Resort in Rancho Santa Fe, Stratosphere and Harrah’s Hotel & Casinos in Las Vegas. During my 30+ years in Food and Beverage, I’ve come across some of the finest individuals who offer a “different level” of customer service. And I wanted to mention a few of the names and hoping you might share this email with them. I need to start with MIKE MCDANIELS. As a Front Desk Agent, he has a complete understanding of guest retention. An absolute gentleman who will do anything to ensure customer satisfaction. If I was still working in La Jolla, I would have made him an offer right then and there to come work with me. Yes, I’m serious. Of course, Joanna, he would never accept because he just loves the Surf & Sand! We had some initial challenges after check-in with the Catalina Suite which wasn’t exactly like the photos had been advertised. It was essential for our anniversary and my wife’s birthday that it had to be perfect. MIKE worked diligently to get us moved over to the Vista Suite 452 for my five nights. He really knew the importance of what he accomplished with us as we inundated him with multiple hugs and thank you’s…haha. As your hotel is obviously busy, MIKE actually moved our room luggage across to the Vista Suite. There’s nothing better, in my opinion, to see a Front Desk Team Member roll up his sleeves and jump in to get things done quickly! And with zero hesitation, to boot! He never made an excuse and never stated “no, I’ll have somebody come back and do it.” He just does it. Congratulations on having such a terrific young man on your staff, Joanne. A+. AMIT Front office manager, was incredibly kind and efficient. Everything he told me he was true in regards to the hotel folio and I wanted to thank him again as unfortunately I didn’t see him upon checkout. ALI…your Concierge Manager was also very kind and sent us a beautiful welcome note with perfect made Chocolate Dipped Strawberries. We had an initial misunderstanding prior to our arrival but I take full responsibility with the miscommunication. I made it a point to locate her and apologize. She was great and gave me a very nice acknowledgment when leaving. Splashes servers GEORGE and PATRICK. We dined with GEORGE on our arrival night. A very kind man, soft spoken and calm. His food knowledge is off the charts. We had a magnificent dinner. We had some special requests and of course…he answered in a positive manner! I can’t emphasize enough to share with everyone that your food is as good as I’ve had anywhere with my previous travels. I know your sister property, Rancho Bernardo Inn, very well. Simply stated, your Culinary Department is better, in my opinion. Just superb. PATRICK was also on a different level. He’s as professional as I’ve ever had. I believe you’re extremely fortunate to have that team in place, Joanne. My writing about Splashes does not do it justice. In a dining room atmosphere, as you can imagine, not too much escapes me. I really do see everything. One actually has to watch PATRICK servicing other guests. The consummate professional with consistency. There’s nothing better for your guests to experience this. Chef’s feature that night was a Dry Aged Prime New York and I asked for a Red wine recommendation. He brought two “ blind tasting” glasses….one was an Argentinian wine from his homeland. It was the winner! I would like to mention my wife and I first went to the Driftwood Kitchen and there’s too much negativity to mention. We left after five minutes. My wife suggested we go to Splashes again and the Host Persons were incredibly gracious and accommodating. Lastly, I’d like to add that one can’t teach passion or elegance but your staff sure does possess it. Host Persons, Culinary, Housekeeping, Maintenance (replaced telephone headset battery), Valet GABE and ADAM, and Front Desk personnel are class personified. I told a few of your staff that I’d be writing you and everyone said you are simply magnificent and a great Leader. Congratulations!

Hello Douglas: We certainly cannot thank you enough for your glowing review of Surf & Sand and our associates. To date, I do not believe we have ever had such a detailed, positive review. Thank you for mentioning the great service of Michael, Ali, George, Patrick, Amit, Gabe, Adam, and all of our special culinary, housekeeping, front desk, maintenance teams. Coming from a hospitality professional, it is truly valued. We hope you are able to return in the near future. Please call upon us directly for any needed assistance. Thank you again!

The rooms are like hot convection ovens, no AC and not enough fans in the world to cool it down. The bar was closed (Monday) as was the restaurant so they had a make shift bar upstairs by the coffee bar. We had to leave our hot box room just to escape the heat to have a terrible margarita in a plastic glass for $17.00. This is the worst hotel room experience I could ever think of and yet here we are staying 3 nights in a heatwave in the worst place on earth.

You cannot find a hotel along the pacific coast with a better room atmosphere or view. Literally on top of the beach and water with a gorgeous 90 degree view of the water. Outstanding staff. Always courteous, polite and very helpful. Perfect Laguna Beach location with walking distance to many shops and restaurant and close to downtown. The room decor is looking a bit worn and tired - but the rest makes up for a wonderful stay.

Most excellent retreat that overlooks the beautiful Laguna Beach coast line, with unparrelled ocean sounds, breazes and smells. A modern campus with the feel of nostalgic elite travel. A must stay for anyone seeking the best California experience.

Mike at the front desk truly helped make our experience memorable by going above and beyond to make us feel comfortable during our stay. Also, special thanks to Brandon, Kevin, and Marcus in valet who got to know our schedules and always had our cars ready at a moment's notice. Special thanks as well to Wes, Rich, and Martin at Splashes Bar. The staff was amazing and are the main reason we will continue to come back to our favorite hotel, The Surf and Sand!

We stayed for our babymoon over labor day weekend. Unfortunately there was a heatwave and high tide which created some issues for us but due to the excellent service didn’t ruin the trip for us! I was shocked by the number of kids at the pool as I expected a very adult Hotel. Just a heads up for anyone visiting for the first time. Food and view at splashes were amazing. Suggest making a reservation ahead of time. The service from check in, splashes, pool etc was excellent. There is no AC but we requested an extra fan and did ok despite the temps. We will definitely return but will avoid holiday weekends entirely or possibly weekends all together. May suggest checking the tide schedule and visit during a cooler month.

Stayed for one night (business trip). I booked through Hotel Tonight and paid $532 for my room. Was checked in by a gentleman named Mike, who was very friendly. I asked if my room had any view, to which he replied "it's not a great view but for the price you're paying, it's really great!" As if somehow $532 shouldn't buy much. He also forgot to have my bags sent up to my room (I waited for 45 minutes). When I approached the front desk, he apologized and said he would have wine sent up to the room to make up for it. No wine was ever sent. The worst part, however, was that the walls are paper thin. And when I say paper thin, I mean PAPER thin. The room next to me had a family with a very small child who screamed throughout the night. It was as if the screaming child was in my room itself. I called several times throughout the night to request being moved, and they said they were sold out so couldn't move me (fair enough, if they are sold out, they are sold out, however at this point if they'd offered me a couch in the lobby I would have taken it). I called back at 9am to speak to a manager and it is clear that they have been trained to use the line "I am sorry to hear that," because this is the line that they used about the bags not getting delivered, the line they used throughout the night when I called to complain about not being able to sleep, and the line that was used when I said it was legitimately the worst night of sleep I had ever had in a hotel. He offered me 2 hours extra time in the room and a $150 credit to use at the hotel that day. That was it, after a completely failed night of sleep at a "luxury property", to which he refused to acknowledge that it was their paper thin walls that are the problem. Instead he kept saying "I'm sorry to hear that you had loud neighbors." No, I didn't have "loud neighbors," I had neighbors with a BABY. Babies scream. The final nail in the coffin for me was that after I checked out, within 15 minutes I realized I'd left my phone charger plugged in and asked for it to be returned. They said they would take care of it. I came back 2 hours later and it miraculously "had never been turned in by housekeeping." I said "but it was clearly left plugged in right by the arm chair in the room." Mike was "sorry to hear that" and said if they found it they would mail it to me. I'll let you guys guess if that ever happened. Conclusion: Enjoy the restaurant and/or bar, the views are stunning, but spend your money elsewhere for a room. You couldn't pay me to go back to this place.

Wish I could have a better report after wanting to stay for years . Property is a little run down; which is particularly troubling when you’re paying a good amount for a room. Amazing location, great dinner, but no AC, upgrades needed and storage in front of room entrances :-(
