This was an excellent stay... The check in was friendly and helpful, with lots of information regarding the parking garage. Anthony was a great desk clerk, friendly and a wealth of information regarding restaurants and staying an extra day. We ate at the fish restaurant (El Pescador Fish Market ) Anthony recommended and it was wonderful The room was lovely, we were so surprised and grateful as we had been traveling all day with a pet. The pet fee was only 20.00 dollars and you would have never known you were in a pet room. Felt like we were in a small suite. Thank you so much !!! Such a lovely, clean and well equipped room, with a mini fridge, microwave, safe, large closet, extra couch and chair. The bathroom was really large and we loved the shower area. This room made us choose to stay a second day and catch up on some rest. The hotel garage is around the back but a gate comes down at 11 PM and they have camera's in the garage as well and you can enter the hotel from the garage area. The fee is 26.00 dollars a day to use the garage. But folks you may pay more than that keeping the meters fed or for parking at restaurants. The lobby was decorated very nicely for the Christmas holiday and the maid staff was very friendly as well. They were not serving the morning breakfast due to covid and didn't offer anything in a to go bag. However, there are many places in walking distance like The Brick and Bell ( had really good breakfast sandwiches) or Girards Bakery.. And the living room has really good coffee and mexican hot choc. We can't thank you enough for such a lovely stay. We got married here in 2005 and this is the first time we have been able to visit since then. You certainly helped make it a wonderful memory.…
We've visited the area several times and were curious about the Empress. It did not disappoint. The building is in the middle of everything, walking distance from the beach area, and just the right size. Our room was in pretty good shape, very comfortable and equipped with a microwave and fridge. The heat did not work in our room but we were quickly given a portable heater that worked very well. We had good luck finding street parking nearby, but that may not be true during busier seasons. One odd thing was that some of the staff did not wear masks despite a local rule that requires them indoors due to Covid.
We booked a weekend "get away" to enjoy a concert at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center on a Saturday night and found ourselves in a sweet European-style hotel. Overall, the staff was friendly and willing to go the extra distance to make our stay pleasant. While unable to provide room-service for in-room dining during the pandemic, the manager stocks a food & personal care kiosk in the lobby where we put together a little breakfast nosh before taking off for the day to explore the town. It is in a good central location. Restaurants, shops, and the beach are an easily walkable distance from the hotel.
Our fourth stay here came after pandemic re-opening. It was not as good as previously. You still can't beat the great location for walking around the village and to the beach. We had excellent service from friendly staffers, too. The room A/C wasn't able to cool the room adequately. We called and were brought two fans, which helped tremendously for comfort. The complimentary breakfast is gone, but at least the lovely patio is still open. The fitness room was sub-par and not serviced. Still comfy bed , clean room, and everything else works well.
I stayed for one night only - it was a business trip for my husband, but for me - just a leisure visit. Antony was very welcoming and let me check in much earlier than 4 pm! I was so happy to be in the room right when arrived, around noon. He also shared bottled water and toothpaste kits. Everything we asked for. I asked for the late check out and was able to stay until 1 pm. I left earlier though. Larry was very helpful as well. The location is very convenient - I walked to La Jolla Cove and snorkeled there. I used beach towels from the hotel which was nice. I paid for the valet parking the first day, but I parked for $5 the second day in a public parking lot, down the street. Overall, very pleasant trip.
