Martin S. 03 7/27/2021 Overpriced and horrible service. It was a celebratory 3-day weekend in July and I specifically asked 8 months in advance in writing for a room with a garden or pool view. Our "deluxe king" ended up overlooking the parking lot. After we found the room--terrible signage kept sending us in the opposite direction--we can only describe the room as "Motel 6" with 1955 carpet and one sink and ratty carpet. The entire sorry property is in need of a make-over. Upon check-in we were told there would be no housekeeping service . (Isn't that a "welcome to the Estancia" introduction. So when I spilled a cup of coffee on the bed linen and comforter later the first evening, I was told to wait until the morning and I would find a change of linen outside my door. For the entire property--which was busy the weekend we were there with three weddings--there was one maybe three star restaurant, Mustangs and Burros, with a sparse menu of tacos and three other entrees. We passed on the Tomahawk steak for $150,00 so there was really just two entree choices. The outdoor patio was pleasant and the female singer was excellent. The one breakfast restaurant, Greenfinch, was OK, except there were only a few servers and the eggs were off-flavor--can you mess up eggs I wondered. Oh yes, toast with the eggs was $5.00 extra. Upon check-out we were charged per night $35.00 "hospitality fee", $35.43 room taxes, and $35.00 self-parking fee! What nerve it takes to misrepresent this hotel as a four or five star property. We felt bad for the ill-trained personnel thinly disguised as "staff" and restaurant servers. We did not visit the spa as we were afraid a message or workout would only inflate our final bill and we needed our money to pay for self-parking. Estancia gives new meaning to the term "get-away". My advice if a couple chooses to have a wedding here would be to put up the guests in a Holiday Inn and eat in LaJolla 15 minutes south.

Hotel's Favorite
This is a gorgeous property, but the best part about it is the exceptional staff. At every turn, they went above and beyond any request I had. We stayed during COVID-19, and even with the many restrictions, the staff made up for it. For example, normally there is a hotel shuttle that will take you to a nearby beach, but that service was suspended during COVID. So what do they do ? The front desk staff arranged and paid for our transportation to and from the beach ! And then, while we were on the beach, they called us to see how we were doing, and if they could also get us tacos or nachos delivered to us on the beach ! I have worked at 5-star properties myself, and these staff members blew me away. I would like to personally commend Fawz Hussein and Juan Jiminez for their exemplary service and being such heroes to the profession of hospitality.

131Joanne131, Thank you so much for your five bubble review. We will celebrate the recognition with Fawz and Juan for their personal impact to your stay. I am so glad you were able to get to our local beach. The shores make a great place to explore and relax in the open space of our local beaches. I'll start with the positives, because...why not! The hotel is not cookie cutter, it has some real charm in the public spaces. The two on property restaurants I ate at were actually very good (Greenfinch and Mustangs and Burritos) with a pleasant setting as well. The pool has a nice vibe and reminded me a little of being at Ojai Valley Inn. Now let's move on to the title of my review! We were treated to a Friday night wedding promptly upon our arrival. What seemed charming at first (kudos to the florists and also the beautiful vows I overheard) but moved to kind of annoying when the wedding moved to the open area near our room for dinner and dancing and we had to listen to a a band belt out cheesy wedding music until 10 pm. Cue the next day which was a wedding on repeat, with other festivities (I didn't even know a baptism brunch was a thing) alongside as well. I hardly wanted to walk by what is meant to be an intimate event, but when the only way to get to your room is to practically walk through the wedding chuppah, you'll do what you have to do. Finally came Sunday and some kind of yoga retreat with participants crammed on the courtyard lawn. Seemed motivational enough, until the teacher jumped on the loud speaker to instruct the yogis! My friends and I had to move from our pleasant outside table to the inside so we could hear each other speak. We were kind of laughing, but still... Can't finish without pointing out some shortfalls about the room. I can handle a generic looking space (which is a kind way of describing the room decor), but the room was musty with only one small window which I couldn't figure out how to open. There were cobwebs on the mirror and the carpet looked way overdue for a replacement. I've bounced around at different hotels over the years when I come to La Jolla. The La Valencia, The Beach and Tennis Club, The Lodge at Torrey Pines, The La Jolla Shores Hotel and they all have their imperfections along with a lot of charm. I'd say of the bunch that this one would be my least favorite and that I doubt I'll be back. I totally understand that using a hotel as an event space is a much needed source of income, especially after the pandemic, and all the celebrations I oversaw looked beautiful. Honestly, if you are looking to host a small outdoor wedding, check with the event planner because they know what they are doing in that regard. It's just that when I come to a hotel I want a little more quiet and privacy than it was possible to get at Estancia.

The resort is beautiful! Such a laid back, peaceful atmosphere. Love the music throughout. Nice to have restaurants and a place to pick up a snack. The staff was friendly and accommodating! Shout out to Ben and Gizeh (our valets)! They were always there when we needed assistance. There was a wedding on one of the days we stayed but it didn’t bother us. In fact, we enjoyed hearing the romantic music playing during the reception as we sat on the swings. The DJ played a great line up of dance music and we danced as we walked in the breezeway. A nice place to come back to after swimming on the beach and sight seeing. And also a nice place if you just want to sit back and read a book for the afternoon. Felt pampered and rested after our stay.

We have stayed at this property several times and have always been happy. This time it was a different experience. There was mold in the shower, shampoo in the bottle marked “conditioner”, slow drain in the bathroom sink, I had to call 3 times and it took two days to remove dirty plates from our room. I would not recommend this hotel, it is in desperate need of a renovation.
