The place to stay in Pingyao is in the ancient city and this hotel has a good location, ten minutes walk to the South Street, where the action is. It is loaded with atmosphere and Chinese charm in a beautiful courtyard setting. However the rooms are tiny and not very well equipped. The shower is a part of the overall bathroom, so that water floods the floor of the entire room after a shower. Expect to sop it up with all the available towels. No AC so it is a bit warm when you first go to bed but cools off later in the night. The breakfast is adequate but undistinguished and the staff barely speaks English. They offer a charming if rather odd evening show in the complex as a part of your stay.
Spent two nights here and enjoyed the authentic courtyard Chinese guesthouse accommodation this provided within the City walls. All very comfortable though the air conditioning seemed to be set to one setting. Each bedroom had a shared space where you could make tea which was useful. The breakfast- largely Chinese - was fine. Only irritating point was the canned music which came on in the courtyards at 5 pm and around 9 am each day and on the same continuous loop. Totally banal music. Would be happy to stay again as it was in a great central location.
Charming traditional inn, with several courtyards, traditional carved rustic furniture, however amenities are adequate although not up to Western standards. Breakfast is good with mostly Chinese dishes and some Western ones. It is located inside the city wall and close to all attractions. One is transported back in time, so regular taken for granted Western comforts are somewhat sacrificed for the experience, but it is worth it!
After a hectic couple of weeks we spent four nights here and completely relaxed. A genuine (firm) kang bed, with a very Chinese but spacious bathroom and a lounge to make tea. The courtyard outside was picturesque and peaceful. Helpful staff and a good breakfast. Great location in the old city with a short walk to the centre of town.
My mum and I stayed for one night and didn’t want to leave! An amazing, relaxing and beautifully traditional ambience. The lobby is the perfect representation of the hotel, the staff are engaging and friendly. The peaceful surrounds of the hotel enhance the great little city of Pingyao!
