This classic Victorian Plantation landmark manor house, built in 1880, once presided over a huge empire of hops. Converted to an intimate country bed and breakfast in 1980 it sits upon a knoll above an unspoiled Russian River vineyard valley ringed by redwood forested mountains. Lovingly preserved it is a place of quiet beauty in the hills of Healdsburg Wine Country. Return now to a time and place that has not quite yet gone by.

Our visit 9/30/23—The location was gorgeous, but there were too many red flags. When the reservation was made, on 8/5/23, Rita (the owner) agreed to have a bed put in for our son. When we arrived, the bed was not there and she didn’t bring one, as she said it was too heavy to carry. She asked if he could sleep on the bench or on the short couch that he was longer than. So disheartening and insulting. There was no key or code for us to lock up our belongings. We had to rely on people just being honest and not stealing. We actually took valuables with us when we left for dinner. Breakfast: She had asked us what we liked and asked my son what he liked. He said he would try the stuffed French toast. She brought out the smallest plate of scrambled egg whites, ONE microwaved Eggo waffle, a slice of watermelon with some blueberries and cantaloupe. The meal he had could not satisfy a 3 year old’s stomach. My husband and I had to give him a portion of our already small portion of stuffed French toast. One of the most hurtful parts of the trip was being isolated from the rest of the group during breakfast. She asked us to sit in the sunroom which is not set up for proper dining (table was too small and chairs are for lounging not eating breakfast). Coming out of that room with the other guests looking at us felt so uncomfortable and uneasy. We felt treated like 2nd class customers, maybe because she has a problem with kids? Or, worse, a problem with my skin color or with my husband’s foreign accent? We’re just baffled and left to wonder. She didn’t suggest that any other guest be isolated to the sunroom for dining. If I could give 0 stars for service, I would. Again, location is great, but courtesy and customer service not even close to meeting the bar. The average rating is completely unjustified and misleading.

Spent one night at this charming B&B. Super clean, beautifully furnished, lovely gardens and served a delicious full breakfast in the morning. Our room had an outside private seating area. It was hot but the AC took care of that! The views and the sunset were fabulous. Rita and the employees were friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend!!!

The Raford Inn Bed & Breakfast was one of the nicest places we have ever stayed at. The location is in the Russian River Valley in the countryside surrounded by grapevines. The Victorian style rooms were not only beautiful but comfortable as well. We stayed in the Strawberry room which had a private entrance. Breakfast was great with a different variety of frittatas, fruit, scones and sausages daily. There was a wine and cheese reception daily where fellow travelers shared their experiences. Rita and her staff were wonderful at making suggestions about wineries and supplying any forgotten items we needed. Overall, a great stay!

My wife and I travel to California wine country every year, and only stay in B&B’s, so I would like to think we have some experience with them. We first found The Raford Inn 3 years ago while driving through the area. It is a location out of a movie on a hill with vineyards everywhere. We walked in to check it out and were welcomed with smiling faces and offered freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. We couldn’t wait to stay here on our next trip and actually did book the following year. Due to Covid, that trip had to be cancelled. This year we decided to travel again, and I was so excited to stay at Raford. When I called to book, whoever answered the phone did not seem to be in a very good mood, but I figured that maybe she had a bad day, and we booked anyway. We were going to check in a bit later at night so I called that morning to advise our eta and was gruffly told that the office closes at 8:00pm, which I told her we would be way before. We arrived at 7:30 and were “greeted” by an employee, who by regular standards was fine, but by B&B standards, not friendly at all. Then came the rules. Unbeknownst to us, they have extremely strict protocols. There is no going into the kitchen nor dining room at all. There is no going into the main house (unless your room is in that section) without a mask. If you need something in the house you have to ring the doorbell for them to come out. If you want coffee, it is served on the cold patio at 8:00am. Breakfast is brought to your room on a dollar store paper plate with plastic cutlery. There is no service in the room. They do not clean it, nor make the beds. If you want fresh towels you have to ask for them and they will leave them outside your room as they will not come in whether you are in it or not. Breakfast was insulting with a cold piece of quiche, a few grapes or small slice of fruit, a store bought muffin, and a sausage, no toast nor bread, nor a cup of coffee. The furniture and decor they call antique is just plain old. Nothing seems renovated for the last 30 years. The shower curtain was full of mold as you see in the picture. My biggest issue with this place was their lack of transparency. I understand one of the owners is not well and I am sorry for that. I know these precautions are for his safety, but there is no excuse for not disclosing these rules prior to booking with them. There is no mention of these on their website nor any travel websites. At least let your guests know ahead of time so they can make their decision properly. Knowing this maybe I would’ve booked, maybe I wouldn’t have, but had I had still booked knowing this, then I would have not been able to complain like this. Unfortunately this was our first and definitely the last stay here. Please find out in advance about their rules and protocols to make sure this is still the place you want to stay at and don’t end up disappointed like us. For almost $300 per night I really expected more.

My family stayed (Adults in their 50s and 2 adults in their 20s) at the Raford Inn for 6 nights while visiting Sonoma County. We enjoyed our time there and enjoyed the Raford Inn immensely. As others have commented, the rooms are a little dated but they are clean, comfortable, and have everything you would need during your stay. It was a bit warm during our stay. When we first saw the window unit air conditioner, I will have to say we were a bit worried, but it worked wonderfully and kept our room chilly during our stay. Upon our arrival, we were a bit put off by the strict Covid protocols that were in place, we could not enter the main house and there was no cleaning of the rooms. However, once we learned that these precautions were in place because Dane is very ill and they are trying to protect his health as much as possible, we completely understood the situation and would most likely make the same choices if in their shoes. The daily breakfast on our private veranda was lovely, yummy, appreciated, and a great way to start the day stress-free. The staff was very pleasant and helpful all of the time. Sitting on the porch and watching the hummingbirds while overlooking a beautiful vineyard made our trip even more enjoyable. Please do not hesitate to give this lovely B&B a visit, you will not regret it.

The owners were friendly and accommodating. But it was definitely an older version of bed and breakfasts. We stayed in the strawberry room that had strawberry wallpaper throughout. The breakfasts had an egg casserole every morning with sausage and fruit. The fruit was all grown on their property. My husband said the coffee was so-so and they usually ran short of hot water for tea. The location was perfect for the wine tastings that we did in Sonoma and Napa Valleys. They had recommended Moshin vineyards for a wine tasting that was very informative and personal. We would stay there again for the location.

Stayed here on a recent wine trip to Sonoma. First let me say the the Inn is in a beautiful location nestled within the wineries of Sonoma. Actually looks across a huge vineyard. We stayed here in June and we were not able to eat in the dining room which kind of limited the eating with other hotel guests, the rooms were not cleaned during our stay we were told this was Covid related. Not sure you can get Covid cleaning an empty room. Many folks spoke about meeting the owners, did not happen during our stay. One of the owners had wine with us one evening for 10 mins or so but that’s about all of our interaction with the owners. There were two women who were there during the evening wine tasting Mary and Ally who were pleasant and offered good tips on dining. I will say this was our first bnb experience but our friends who visit bnb’s regularly agreed rooms were tired and in need of updating.

I am writing my review on the next to the last day here, as I sit on the property porch overlooking vineyards. The sun is shining, the sky is blue, the hummingbirds are at their feeder, and the breeze is soft as silk. The Rayford Inn was our base for exploring Sonoma valley for several days and for this, it was perfect. We tasted wine, hiked in the Armstrong Redwood State Park, explored the Sonoma Coast State Park, and spent a day doing touristy things in San Francisco (including Muir Woods, which is a must). The breakfast was tasty and filling, as advertised, and the coffee was on the porch at 8 am. We needed a snack in the later afternoon to make it to dinner. The room was cute but small; I must admit that I have been spoiled by all the space you get when you go with VRBO or AirBnB. The afternoon wine was a nice touch but you have to ask for the cheese board, as it’s not otherwise served. The owners are maintaining COVID policies, so I strongly recommend that you ask about them, as they were not apparent from the website.

The Radford Inn ticks all the boxes for the model Bed and Breakfast for Sonoma county. Being outside the city a ways only adds to the intimacy of this lovely spot. We spent three nights in the spacious Blueberry room and were there to celebrate our 50th Wedding anniversary. We couldn't have stayed in a better place. Rita the owner, is a most gracious hostess and makes sure that you are comfortable. The only surprise was that there is no TV, but once we were there, we enjoyed the place so much, it didn't matter. The Radford Inn definitely earned my five star rating.
