Love this place. So much to do for the kids. Hiking, fishing and swimming. The lodge is great and the food is exceptional. They also have a bar! Perfect! The only negative thing is the $25 corkage! I understand if you are not staying there but really? Maybe $10? Even Sierra Pines waves corkage for people staying there.

We had a friend recommend we try the restaurant at this lodge while we were in the Graeagle area. When I initially called for reservations they said that they were not taking them more than a day or two in advance due to Covid and the need to minimize the number of people (and needing to support the people staying in the Lodge). So we called when we arrived in the area and were able to get a reservation. We went thinking the meal would be ok but that it would be worth the experience...we were pleasantly surprised at how delicious everything was. I had a Bison Filet Steak and my husband had their famous meatloaf. Both meals were great. Good portion sizes (without being too big). The service was attentive and friendly, all wore masks and from what I could tell they were thoroughly wiping down tables between guests. We sat inside as I forgot to ask for outdoor table when we booked, but we were placed in front of an open window so we felt like we had a good view and airflow. We walked around the lodge area a big and enjoyed seeing the big waterfall at the end of the grounds.
We will definitely go back for a meal and may consider staying at the lodge at some point. Highly recommend!

My family enjoyed a three night stay here. In most ways, it exceeded expectations. This is a lovely region. The cabins are rustic / no frills (as advertised).

The food was excellent -- great choices each morning and night, very good produce (excellent salads), and excellent desserts. We have been to other places where breakfasts and dinners are included, but rarely has the food been so good as Chef Lynn Hagen's.

The site has a creek and waterfall and swimming hole, and you can walk/hike up to Smith Lake (and other other lakes nearby). The Lodge has a rowboat at Smith Lake. They will also take kayaks to nearby Salmon Lake, if you want that. We also went horseback riding (views of many lakes!) very close by. If you are looking for a delicious taste of Lakes Basin and Plumas National Forest, this is an ideal home base. Brett and Sarah and every other person on staff here were helpful and pleasant. I would go back in a heartbeat, and I hope I have the opportunity to do so.

We dined at Firewoods! Amazing! We have a place nearby in Johnsville and have enjoyed many of the local dining establishments over the years, except for Firewoods. So on my birthday we decided to give it a try. We can't say enough for the restaurant, its staff, the bar, the food and the service. Everything was 100%... top notch.

The quality and flavors of the food were divine. I had the Chicken Pot Pie and my husband the Flank Steak. The salads were yummy, the warm tableside bread outstanding and the service friendly and efficient.

Great job Jim and Firewoods' team!

A nice rustic place to get away from it all. There is no air conditioning or cell service. There are simple cabins and delicious food served for breakfast and dinner. Once you get there you can release the kids, they typically find others to play with in a safe environment.

My grandparents built Gray Eagle Lodge in the 1920's. Most of the cabins he built are still standing. The water wheel (toward the end of the cabins) was used to provide electricity. They had horses on the property for guests. They sold the property in the 1940s.

I have stayed at the lodge several times over the years. Our family is traveling there again at the end of August 2020.

Beautiful setting. A great place to relax, hike or fish. Would highly recommend it!

Upon our arrival and check in we were handed what appeared to be our invoice save for charges throughout our stay. The invoices estimated price was $279 for two adults and two kids. Upon checkout the invoice was $427!! The owner added gratuity fee of $35, resort fees, and a whopping $50 per kid!! I can't say I have been charged for kids before. On top of the high price there were several issues.

We got put in a small apartment. The apartment had no heater. The apartment had a tiny deck. The apartment was above the dance floor. The floor and windows were rattling with the bass until 11pm so my kids couldn't get to sleep. It was so loud up there you couldn't have a conversation. The bathroom had 2 bars of soap. No shampoo, conditioner, or lotion. On top of all of that the price seemed to be higher then people staying in nice quiet cabins that had heaters and decks. I was and still am a bit perplexed by this.

These issues were raised to the owner who did not apologize, offer any discount or even seem to care that his customers, a family of four were dissatisfied. We travel a lot and have honestly got better customer service at a holiday inn.

Is being above a dance floor with the windows rattling, no heater when it's 35' at night, lack of amenities and poor management worth over $400 a night to you??? It sure wasn't to us.

The location is beautiful, I will give them that.

Response from CowgirlinVerdi, Owner at Gray Eagle Lodge

A response to our future guests....please note that this guest stayed with us at a private wedding event which was held after we closed for the season. The double occupancy/additional guest pricing was negotiated by the wedding party along with the automatic gratuity. The wedding party was solely responsible for cabin assignments for their guests. This guest called and was provided the cabin assignment and pricing for the contracted two night minimum stay. He only stayed for one of the two nights contracted by the wedding party. During our normal season, Memorial Day to early October, the game room ("dance floor") opens at 9:00am and closes at 9:00pm. There are no bands or DJ present!!!! It is unfortunate that the wedding party's festivities interrupted the family. We always suggest to our wedding couples to be very mindful of the guests they put above the reception facility. During a wedding, these rooms are better suited for single folks that are going to be enjoying the festivities well into the evening. Gray Eagle Lodge has been in my family for 30 years and I take our guests satisfaction very seriously. I did speak to this guest at check-out and was sympathetic to his families cabin assignment. We have been hosting our guests for generations and will continue to offer our guests the best the Lakes Basin has to offer!

We stayed at Gray Eagle Lodge in August of last year (2012). I am so sorry to say it was a horrible experience. We had rats in our cabin. My 4 year old son accidentally discovered a trap with a dead rat under our bed, things went down hill from there. We were not offered alternative accommodations, instead we were instructed to box our food up, and they brought more traps which we had the unpleasant experience of hearing go off in the night. We then were told that they had been struggling with an infestation in our cabin all summer. THE CABIN SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RENTED OUT AT ALL with such an unsanitary conditions. Finally, the last straw was watching a rat run across a rafter over our bed.

We left a day early. The only compensation we were given was we did not have to pay for the last day - when we weren't even there. Nothing was discounted, no refunds given. Just a mediocre apology. My son still occasionally has nightmares from staying there.

We so wanted to love this place and come every year. I will never go back there again....

It took us a while to figure out how to respond to this review. After reviewing the reservation history, interviewing our maids, front desk staff, and wait staff with regard to this particular guest and these accusations, we've decided to simply say that this is A COMPLETE MISREPRESENTATION OF THE TRUTH!!!! We wish this family luck in their future travels.

Glamping is the best way to describe this place. Beautiful location next to a river with swimming hole and waterfall. Hiking trails that start from the property make it very convenient. There is no cell phone service and internet is spotty and slow at best - which adds to the charm for a family trip. Food is good but not great.

The Gray Eagle Lodge is an amazing Sierra getaway! The cabins are perfectly appointed with a cozy cabin feel with an updated feel. Food is amazing and best of all - it is inlcuded. Owners are excellent hosts. Lots of hiking and water activities just minutes away from the Lodge.

Are the summer porch rooms with twin beds enclosed?
Answer from Flyboy22

Towels are provided and they are very nice and fluffy. Only bath towels and wash cloths and a bath mat are provided. Bring your own beach towels. No coffee maker in the room but hey do have coffee from 6:30AM - about 9:30 AM in the Lodge which is a short (less than 1 minute) walk from nearly every cabin I found. There is ice available in the lodge all day and night. There is a small ice box in the small fridge, so you can keep some ice in there.
