#1 of 3 B&Bs / Inns in Glen Ellen
Travelers' Choice
Tucked into the Sonoma Valley hamlet of Glen Ellen, the Gaige House + Ryokan feels like a secret hideaway. Of course, it's not really a secret; the Gaige House + Ryokan is regularly recommended in Michelin and other guides. Gaige House + Ryokan is part of the prestigious Four Sisters Inns collection and is an elegant blend of vintage and contemporary architecture. The verdant, secluded setting along Calabaza's Creek includes an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub. All guests enjoy complimentary breakfast buffet and afternoon wine and cheese tasting as well as refreshing green tea at check-in, house-baked matcha cookies, after-dinner sake alongside the port and sherry. The spa treatment menu includes new massages, with either lemongrass or lavender infusions. Guests staying in Gaige House + Ryokan’s Zen Suites discover additional enhancements found in classic ryokans, such as the use of yukata robes, geta and zori slippers.

Gaige house is a lovely little place in the quaint town of Glen Ellen. Glen Ellen is small but well located, not far from Sonoma. There are some lovely restaurants in the area, but be sure to book dinner reservations at them in advance. We visited during the week and were not able to get reservations at our 2 top choices. Communication with the staff at Gaige house was simple and efficient. They did a good job of using texting to tend to our needs. The staff we dealt with was helpful, efficient, and friendly. Our Creekside room was spacious and well appointed. The TV is placed in an area that makes viewing it difficult from the sofas, so if you intend to watch TV be prepared to be on the bed. The bathroom was large and separate enough from the sleeping area to insure privacy. The water pressure could have been better in the 2-person shower, but it was adequit. Two types of robes were in the room, a nice touch to be able to choose the type we preferred. The outdoor sitting area was a nice bonus to the room. Some wine and cheese was brought to the room daily, as well as a couple of cookies. In the morning breakfast arrived to the room within 15 minutes of texting the staff that we were ready for it. There was a nice selection of food and I was very pleased to see that it was a totally vegetarian breakfast. My only complaint was that the hot entrees did not arrive hot....on our second morning the eggs were inedible as they were barely warm. We would definitely stay here again if we were in the area.

Excellent place to get away from the routines of your life and the pandemic. No contact check in/out. Communicated with front desk via text. Evening mini picnic of cheese/crackers and wine and breakfast was delivered to the door in insulated bags. The pool was open but we did not use it. We had the King bed with garden view room which was excellent. Very spacious and peaceful with a zen garden enclosed in glass sliding doors between bath and bed. The room then opened up on the other side of the bed to a garden/dry creek west facing including 2 chaise chairs. The bath had double showers and a stone tub for soaking. There was a flat screen TV and excellent wi-fi.

Stayed here with husband for a quick 2 night anniversary trip in April 2021 and it was incredibly peaceful and relaxing and just what we needed. Extremely safe COVID protocols including interacting with staff mostly over text, contactless check-in and check-out, etc. We stayed in the Creekside Suite and highly recommend. Pictures and description on website don't quite do it justice. There was a sitting area with pull out couch, TV, gas fireplace, mini bar and mini fridge. Bathroom had shower, huge soaking tub that easily fit two adults, and a skylight with great natural light. Suite also had a large private landscaped patio that faced the creek with two lounge chairs, small table, and water feature. We spent a lot of time relaxing out there and also in the room with the door open to the patio (there was a screen door to prevent bugs from flying in). We loved the full breakfast that was delivered to your room in morning and the mini cheese platter with wine and cookies that was delivered each afternoon. While in the area definitely check out Glen Ellen Star (3 min walk), Les Pascals (delicious sandwiches, pastries, and desserts), Glen Ellen Village Market (full grocery store with extensive cold and hot prepared food options), and the Sonoma Botanical Garden.

I just wanted to take the time to thank Micah at Gaige House in Glen Ellen for his extremely kind & forthcoming professionalism for my new mother stay for a bath at Gaige House. Micah went out of his way both on the phone leading up to my stay through my stay to make me feel cared for as a guest. I could of stayed anywhere in wine country for a bath it’s all I wanted but his empathy for my situation was felt on the phone & lead me to book there. Being a new mother in an unforgiving pandemic is no joke. I needed to recover & relax for one night. Enjoy the bath & room & feel myself again. He delivered the cheese & wine to my room and took time to speak to me about his personal journey as a father. I had tears in my eyes behind my glasses feeling so heard & validated. I’m a vendor in wine country weddings a makeup artist. I’ve worked upstairs in the bridal suite many times. I’ll be dedicating my words to promote this hotel to my brides in my huge social media following. I’m so happy with my experience and don’t have a bath I was about to book another room somewhere else but I’m going to be staying for sure again with the four sisters hotels. Thank you so much Micah the GM. Your kindness and generosity with your time will never be forgotten!

Be careful which room type you book if you’re hoping for a room with a soaking bathtub! The descriptions aren’t super clear online and I was misled by their staff on which room to book in order to get a bathtub. Not all of them come with one and the rooms without them are NOT worth the money otherwise. If you’re staying in a room (not a suite) the main building is old/historic, so very noisy, and creaky with thin walls so you can hear everything happening outside your door, kitchen noises, other guests opening/closing doors, etc. I wouldn’t have booked here if I knew that’s what I’d be getting! Most people hear ryokan and think of a Japanese-style bath and you certainly aren’t getting that here unfortunately.
