#1 of 3 B&Bs / Inns in Glen Ellen
Travelers' Choice
Tucked into the Sonoma Valley hamlet of Glen Ellen, the Gaige House + Ryokan feels like a secret hideaway. Of course, it's not really a secret; the Gaige House + Ryokan is regularly recommended in Michelin and other guides. Gaige House + Ryokan is part of the prestigious Four Sisters Inns collection and is an elegant blend of vintage and contemporary architecture. The verdant, secluded setting along Calabaza's Creek includes an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub. All guests enjoy complimentary breakfast buffet and afternoon wine and cheese tasting as well as refreshing green tea at check-in, house-baked matcha cookies, after-dinner sake alongside the port and sherry. The spa treatment menu includes new massages, with either lemongrass or lavender infusions. Guests staying in Gaige House + Ryokan’s Zen Suites discover additional enhancements found in classic ryokans, such as the use of yukata robes, geta and zori slippers.

Be careful which room type you book if you’re hoping for a room with a soaking bathtub! The descriptions aren’t super clear online and I was misled by their staff on which room to book in order to get a bathtub. Not all of them come with one and the rooms without them are NOT worth the money otherwise. If you’re staying in a room (not a suite) the main building is old/historic, so very noisy, and creaky with thin walls so you can hear everything happening outside your door, kitchen noises, other guests opening/closing doors, etc. I wouldn’t have booked here if I knew that’s what I’d be getting! Most people hear ryokan and think of a Japanese-style bath and you certainly aren’t getting that here unfortunately.

Amazing place! Me and my husband could live forever in the zen garden suite! Bathtub was incredible! Everything perfect! Service at front desk was hearty! Breakfast was delicious! I gave it as a gift for my husband’s birthday and I think that he will never stop to thank me! He loved it and said that he had a blessed time!

First off we had a lovely time! We stayed in the Gaige Suite. Easy to find and great location. When we arrived Ariel at the front desk was there to greet us. She was very kind and explained the lay out and COVID rules to us. I was highly impressed by her kindness and service. We received text message throughout our stay, including letting us know when wine and cheese happy hour was and just a simple check in to see how we were liking our room. It was very easy to communicate with the front desk via text message. You could also call them if needed. They provided several recommendations of wineries and dinner. They also offered to call and set up tasting or dinner reservations. Our room was beautiful and very clean. We stayed 2 nights in the Gaige Suite. The room is very large with a comfy king bed, fire place, little mini fridge, wonderful bathtub that easily fit two people and what I thought was very special was the private deck that over looks the property. The deck had multiple plush chair and couches, 2 lounges and umbrellas. The breakfast was very fun. In the morning you can text down to the front desk and ask for breakfast to be brought up to your room. They simply leave your breakfast kit at your door for contactless delivery. They will provide a hot main dish, eggs, pancakes, quiche, potatoes ect as well as fruit, yogurt, granola, juice and coffee. We took our breakfast out on the deck both days. Love that I got to stay in my comfy robe and sip coffee while watching the sun creep into the valley. The front desk has extra wine for purchase, the second night we got a bottle of sake, which they brought to us on ice with chocolate truffles. The pool was wonderful. It was warm while we were there, in the 90's. The pool is open and heated. There was no one at the pool the first day we went and a few people the second day. Lots of room to social distance. We took our cheese and wine happy hour box down to the pool area. Ariel from the front provided us with some plastic wine glasses for the pool area. The hot tub is currently closed, but that makes sense, it very small and there would be no way to social distance. We explored the property, lots of fun places to take pictures and explore and there are several places where you can sit on comfy patio furniture and sit by the fire places. We would love to return and they seem to have nice offers on discounted rooms in the winter months. It would be so lovely to curl up by the fire place with a glass of wine. We went to a few places near by. The Mayo Winery, The Glen Ellen Mill (very kind service and good food), The Glen Ellen Star for dinner (highly recommend and a 3 minute walk from the Ryokan). We also visited the grocery store, which has a large selection of paninis, sandwiches, salads and cheese (we grabbed a little extra and added it to our cheese box from the Ryokan). We heard Les Pascles French bakery is a must. We didn't get a chance to go, but heard great things. Over all lovely stay, thank you Ariel for your kindness! We will be back.

Wonderful place to stay, would definitely recommend and return, especially once covid restrictions are lifted and the spa opens back up. We stayed in the deluxe king spa room and it was fantastic. The tub was MASSIVE and CLEAN with great jets and a rainfall shower head from the ceiling and a removable and adjustable shower head on the wall. The room was very spacious with plenty of room for luggage and moving about. We didn’t utilize the pool or other outdoor amenities but we did take a look around and it was beautiful. The town itself is quaint and small, very cute. Sonoma is about a 15-20 minute drive, Napa is further, but the landscape is so beautiful so we don’t mind long drives from place to place. There are only 2 negatives, which can’t be helped, and that is that there is no elevator... so carrying heavy luggage was awkward, but will in no way keep me from staying there again or recommending it to others. And Uber/Lyft are technically available, but the 4 nights we were there, there were no drivers available. So plan to hire a driver or have a DD.

We stayed at the Gaige House fairly soon after reopening during COVID. We had a small basic room in the main house. The experience was just OK. The room was quiet and comfortable, but nothing special. Service was OK. The breakfasts and afternoon wine service was modified for COVID and not very good. I think with a little effort, it could have been much better. There are a few restaurants within walking or short driving distance. Glen Ellen is a cute, sleepy little town.
