My husband and I had a kid-free weekend, so we decided to hop a plane to see the Redwood forests. Eureka seemed to be a good point between the northern parks and Avenue of the Giants. I found Carter House Inns on the chamber of commerce site and thought it looked lovely. Upon booking, you fill out some info on your ETA. I wrote we would arrive by 8 pm. Apparently, that is not observed by the staff, as I received a call from them at 5 pm, while in the forest, asking when we expected to arrive. Usually, I would think "no big deal," but it seemed almost impatient, so I told her we'd be there within an hour or so. Not a great first impression. Upon arriving, we did notice a troubling homeless population. We had a rental car (convertible) and parked in the side lot, luckily not having to leave it on the street, and we were told to not leave any valuables in sight. While the building is pretty, the hallway smelled of natural gas, I'm assuming from the gas fireplaces. We get up to our room, and it was extremely disappointing. I was so absolutely sure that they put us in the incorrect room type, as I had booked a room with a jacuzzi tub IN THE ROOM, not in the bathroom. The room had a very odd layout, a lot of wasted space. For the cost, I expected more. I let it go, as I did not want to ruin the weekend. The bed was uncomfortably soft - not like a plush mattress - more like an old worn-out innerspring mattress. There is no comfortable furniture in the room - only the bed, a desk, two upright (like dining chairs), and a wooden bench with a pad on it. Not exactly things you want to settle in and try to relax on. We were on the second-floor front corner of the building and the traffic noise was extremely loud. The homeless people on the streets were loud at all hours of the night. Also making noise was the ceiling fan that we had to leave on the whole time because the room was very warm. My husband had to adjust it so it would stop sounding like a leaky faucet. But, they are sure to let you know there are earplugs in the bedside tables. Onto the bathroom. Towels are nice, robes are nice. I was surprised that all the linens smelled of conventional laundry soap! Not good for those of us with sensitive skin and/or who are sensitive to scents. The Jacuzzi - plenty of hot water, but we could not find the switch to turn on the jets. Finally, on our last night there, after giving up and draining the water, we get out and put on the robes - only to find the switch on the wall BEHIND the robes, about 6 feet away from the tub. No note about where the switch is anywhere else in the bathroom - just a note about not putting anything inappropriate in their low-flow toilets. Guess they don't really want you to use the tub. The toiletries - MADE IN CHINA, purchased from a hotel wholesale company. For the price, I would expect some L'Occitane, or a local natural bath and body line, or Body Shop at least! Thankful I brought my own products. Breakfast was OK. The person who served us whizzed by our table and said "do you want breakfast?" we said yes, and she said she would be right out. She comes back with a pre-made tray telling us it's morning glory muffins and runs away again. It was muffins and some fruit and yogurt. The muffins were pretty dry, and there was no butter or any other spread offered. The yogurt was good. Overall, I was disappointed with our whole stay. I would not return or recommend and I do not understand the cost to experience. Also, if you do visit Eureka, skip most of the old town restaurants except Humboldt Bay Bistro and The Greene Lily - both were excellent in service and food.

We are very happy you found the towels, robes and breakfast to be pleasant. As you can imagine, we work along with everyone related to the homeless in our area. This was increased by COVID, as it was everywhere, and is, of course, not helped by the high cost of housing. We work on this daily with our downtown partners. We are in Eureka’s equivalent of a downtown and yes, there is sometimes noise associated with our great, walkable-to-everything neighborhood. The ear plugs are placed for the benefit of our guests no matter the noise problem, including snoring. Based on your review, I know the room you were in and we will take all your comments into account and certainly perform all maintenance as needed. Our staff takes great pride in our service and the property. It is always helpful to get feedback during or after a stay. We wish you all the best and hope you have wonderful holidays. Hotel's Favorite
We have nothing but accolades to share for our stay at the Carter House Inn. We were celebrating our anniversary and arrived to champagne on ice in our suite. I would have been just as content to spend much more time enjoying our room. The bed was very comfortable as was the temperature of the room. We had a nice gas fireplace that didn’t get utilized only due to weather not necessitating a need for it. In addition to the Inn the facility offers rooms in a cottage and a B&B across the street. This historic inn is very walkable to the waterfront, shopping, and many restaurants. The Inn offers free breakfast and in the evening a complimentary glass of wine. We enjoyed chatting with the staff during check in and while enjoying our evening glass of wine. We had read rave reviews about their restaurant but sadly it hasn’t yet reopened due to staffing needs. Hopefully they will reopen in the future as well do we hope to return for another stay at this wonderful Inn.

This inn is well-run but could use some improvement. My stay was pleasant. I enjoyed the friendly staff, the convivial bar, and the continental breakfasts that are included. My room however, could use upgrading. The carpet is industrial grey carpet-tile so you don't get a sense of how clean it is. I was wary of going barefoot. The bath is white-tiled and well-lit with an old-fashioned tub/shower with curtain. Lots of good towels are provided as well as a very thick and voluminous robe (would prefer a lighter cotton robe that would take up less space). The mattress was somewhat saggy and the pillows too firm. The bedroom has good storage and a nice desk. Despite facing the parking lot it was quiet. There is no way to turn off the heat which comes through the floor boards. I needed to use the ceiling fan along with a plug-in fan on a chair to cool the room bit. There is a complementary wine offered in the evening but no bar-bites of food as the restaurant is closed until further notice. The bar is.a nice place to relax in the early evening. The location is in the historic district which is beautiful but tainted but a significant homeless population. I would stay here again but would try to reserve a better room.

While traveling on business, my husband and I chose the Carter House Inn as we were going to be traveling through the Eureka area. We chose this place specifically because it was in the Select Registry book of excellent bed-and-breakfast. The Select Registry chooses top-notch bed-and-breakfast’s after visiting secretly and grading them on everything. This was our third Select Registry bed-and-breakfast and we were expecting the same high-level of everything that we had experienced in the first two. Unfortunately this one didn’t live quite up to our expectations. The staff is wonderful and friendly and helpful. No complaints there. The young woman brought us lovely glasses of wine and sparkling mineral water upon our late arrival. However, we were disappointed with the continental breakfast which was pretty bad. Also we stayed in the Grand Suite and it has two fireplaces which neither of them worked. It was raining and we were told that it was because of the storm and the wind. The bed was not very comfortable and the pillows were extremely terrible. We were so glad we had brought our own pillows. One other thing is the window between the bed and the bathroom-very strange and a little annoying. The place is beautiful, well appointed but as a previous reviewer stated the area is quite sketchy and we were also told not to leave any thing in our car and lock it up tight. We were supposed to have a view of the bay which we did not. The window looks out over a bunch of old buildings and we might have been able to see the harbor on a little corner but it was a cloudy day and foggy and we couldn’t see anything. Overall I’d say we were not impressed and we will not be staying here again. A side note: the woman on staff in the morning noticed that I had left my jacket in the dining room and called me right away so we could come back for it. She was so sweet as are the other staff members we talked to. They are all lovely people.
