Far from your standard hotel experience, this hotel is a nice step back in time where you feel like you are a guest in a small town inn run by a local family. Sure there are some quirks but that is part of the fun of it.

We stayed in a Grand Suite which had two rooms separated by glass paneled French doors. The suite was comfortable and homey. It felt like a small apartment and included a fireplace that was used even though it was late June. The bathroom was fine, but it had large gray tiling on the floor and in the shower and thus did not match the charm of the rest of the suite, which was unfortunate.

The hotel offers a very nice complimentary breakfast each morning in a nice looking room off the lobby. Included is a hot selection and very good baked goods. The hotel also offers you a complimentary glass of wine each night which you can take over a several hour period in the small bar or lobby sitting area.

There is a small parking lot, but most likely you will end up parking on the street, which seemed to a fine alternative. The staff was attentive and nice. We really enjoyed the hotel and its atmosphere.

From the moment we walked in the door, the staff was wonderful! It was a busy time with dinner service going on, as well as complimentary wine in the bar. Check in was easy, and we were able to get a dinner reservation within the hour. I asked about an ice machine as I had items that needed to be kept cold. The woman at the front found us a mini fridge and brought it to our room right away. That was very much appreciated!

Dinner was a pre-fixed 3 course meal, and we also enjoyed the complimentary breakfast each morning. Everything was delicious, and there was a lot of detail and care that went into each food item.

Our room was very comfortable and clean. There was a heavy door that separated the rooms from the bar and lobby area that was very effective in minimizing noise. We were in the building where the restaurant is located.

There is ample parking both in the lot and on the street. The downtown area is very walkable and easy to reach. Several cute shops nearby, although many of them were closed over the holiday weekend.

We would not hesitate to stay at the Carter House Inn again and again!

We booked this because of the location. The inn was as described, and the people were great! This was our first trip to the Pacific Northwest and the purpose was to see the Redwoods! It was a great central location for our day trips to the different state and national parks.

Breakfast was served daily, and was amazing! The staff was friendly and helpful. The reason I didn’t give this place five stars were a few simple things. There was mold in the shower, cleanliness of the bathroom ( dirt and grime around the baseboards and the wall outlets), the chair was very stained (as if someone spilled liquid and never cleaned it ), there was a terrible noise in the room that sounded like an old refrigerator running, the bathroom lights flickering quite a bit as if there was some kind of electrical draw on them, and the pillows were terrible.

Things not in control of the owners, that guest should be aware of, parking can be difficult when the inn is full. The homeless population in the area is very high, and car break-ins apparently happen frequently (there are signs all over the city).

Our stay in Eureka was great! Cute little town with great shops and restaurants. The zoo and skywalk were fantastic. Driving was easy to all the state parks and the little towns in the area. Everything in California is expensive, so I guess the price per night was acceptable.

All in all I would recommend this place!

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Carter House Inn. We have stayed here before when visiting relatives in the Eureka area and love the beautiful rooms, comfortable beds, luxurious linens, accommodating and friendly staff, location walking distance to Old Town, and delicious breakfasts that are included. We usually book a 'really nice queen' room but this time booked a larger suite and loved the spaciousness, fireplace, and views of the Victorians in the neighborhood. We stayed in the hotel and appreciated that there's an elevator. We walked to Old Town (10 minutes) and heard the Scotia Band play a noon concert on the 4th. We lucked out because we had a great view of the fireworks later that night from our room. The food served at breakfast and that you can order from the bar in the evenings was delicious--our compliments to the chef! One evening I was not feeling so well and stayed in. I was hungry, was not up for a whole meal and needed something simple. I asked the bartender if I could get a cooked chicken breast and she was very happy to accommodate the request. This sounds odd and it was a simple grilled chicken breast, but it was cooked perfectly and tasted like the best one I've ever eaten! We enjoyed our stay. Everyone on the staff who we encountered greeted us with a friendly smile and wanted to ensure that we were comfortable and had all that we needed. We looked forward each night to returning to the comfort of the room and will stay here again.

The staff was friendly and personable. Little perks such as makeup cleansing wipes, bathroom robes, complimentary wine, and a custom hot breakfast made our stay feel more special. The hotel was conveniently located near many local attractions, including a waterfront trail, the Carson Mansion, Opera Alley, downtown shops, and restaurants. However, the parking situation is really tight. Also, I did feel that housekeeping could have paid closer attention to some areas. For example, the cups that are available for use in our room were questionable. I felt that they were not thoroughly cleaned or checked before our arrival. However, I would likely stay here again

It was a well appointed clean and crisp Victorian home with modern amenities, hard wood floors expansive ceilings, lovely furniture and the fireplace in the entry was very inviting. They had a nice bar and served a complementary glass of wine daily and a restaurant on the premises.

The folks there were both accommodating and friendly, full of information about the area, and a big glass jar of Hershey's chocolate squares sit on the host's desk along with fresh chocolate chip cookies, baked on the premises daily, for guests. Coffee and Tea are there all day as well as the bar if you need further fortification.

The restaurant was good and the complementary breakfast top notch. There are two options each day to choose from- The first day my husband had cheesy eggs and sausage and I had a frittata with salad, the next day he had oatmeal, brown sugar, nuts and raisins (yes they had oat milk and half and half) and I had the brie omelet (they were out of cheddar) and spring salad. All of the breakfast stuff was yummy and the coffee good and lots of teas available for peeps like me. They also offer a buffet of different kinds of breads; bagels, English muffins and thick cut sourdough. There were berries and fruit and pastries, cream cheese, butter and preserves in little ceramic dishes to take to your table. This was reminiscent of breakfasts we've had in Europe. The room was comfy and we had a great time.

Our stay at Carter Bed and Breakfast was perfect, from check in to check out. We were greeted with chocolate chip cookies, then a complimentary class of wine in the bar/lobby before we went out to dinner. Our room was large, quiet, airy (tall ceiling with large fan) and the bed was super comfortable. There were lots of potential restaurants within walking distance - and old town is lovely to walk around in - and the bar at the Carter House even serves light food/appetizers. The breakfast (3 choices made to order) plus an amazing pastries, fruit, yogurt, juices, etc bar. The General Manager who we met before checking out, took us on a tour of the home across the street and gave us a great verbal history of Eureka. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend to everyone!

I guess I should have called first. From the website, I was expecting a fantastic, luxurious, historic hotel room feeling, wiht the added charm of a fireplace and hot tub. Why expect anything else from The Carter House Inns with its great reviews, and fantastic photos of the suites? I assume its much better in the main hotel building? We booked the Bell Cottage which was pretty on the outside but a dud on the inside. Zero historic feel excpet for the original door and window moldings and hinges. Everything else was modern and cheap, including the light fixtures and curtains, which look like they have not been cleaned in a long time. The room was so small it wouldnt even fit a comfortable chair. Someone had grabbed one of the cheap kitchen chairs and put it in there. The bathrom had no place to put anything either. The tub was large and clean but had modern cheap marble tiles around it instead of anything historic looking. It was extreamly noisy too and the cheap light dimmer switch didnt work.
On the plus side , the complimentary breakfast whcih included fresh fruit, toast, and an aswome chorizo omelette with avacado on it was superb and so was the hostess's freindlness. Didnt experince much of that from the regular hotel checkin and out guys though. They werent the least bit rude but they werent very welcomng either.

My wife and I stayed at the Carter House while on a Northwest Coast driving vacation. The Hotel is beautiful and was built to match the architecture of the surrounding Victorian homes. We were greeted warmly by the front desk clerk. Our room was beautiful with a great bed, nice artwork and luxury bed sheets and towels. We had drinks in the bar both nights. It is small but very nice and our bartender, Allison provided excellent service. On the second night, we ate burgers and truffle fries at the bar and they were excellent. The complimentary breakfast each morning was very good. We had a chance to speak with the hotel’s General Manager Troy Ritchie both mornings. He made us feel very welcome and his attention to detail in managing this hotel was clearly evident. The hotel’s fine dining restaurant, 301 has been closed but is expected to open soon The Carter House Inn was a great find and we will definitely return when their restaurant, 301 is open.

Wonderful experience, the owner and staff treats me like family. The Best Breakfast in entire Humboldt county. Delicious home made pastry, freshly made omelette every morning. The breakfast entree changes every morning . Aromatic tea.
Dinner service is fast and impeccable, meticulously seasoned Beef Cheek . Taking my first bite of Beef Cheek risotto, the flavor of rosemary float around the palate. Absolutely memorable. Very comfortable bed, thick cozy towel and bath robe.
In old town Eureka, stone threw walk to most of the sights in town. One of the best stay ever. Love this Bed and Breakfast.
