Nestled in a picturesque beachfront location, Elk Cove Inn & Spa draws guests in with its stunning views and beautifully maintained grounds. Many visitors rave about the cozy and comfortable rooms, despite some noting space limitations. The service stands out for its attentiveness, with the in-room breakfasts receiving special accolades.

Detailed Reviews
Always loved Elk Cjove Inn but new management needs to spiff up the place to meet the luxury price. The coffee machine has been removed. The chairs and ottomans in the Frank Drew suite definetly need reupholstered but better yet replaced with comfy recliners. Containers in bathroom need labels so you can tell soap from lotion. Chez Marie dinners which are offered Tuesday and Saturday nights are still spectacular. As for the breakfast, the cook is in love with arugula and creating dishes using everythiing possible. Amy and Joshua are the new Innkeepers and they are delightful.

We celebrated our 20th anniversary at the Inn, staying in the George Burk jr. suite, where we enjoyed the amenities of the fridge, microwave, gas fireplace, and large bath. Any of the rooms would likely have worked for us because it’s such a beautiful and relaxing place that is managed with care.
All the staff and resident animals made us feel welcomed and provided such warm hospitality. We especially want to acknowledge how conscientious the staff is about safety and sanitation. We felt comfortable enough to splurge on massages, and we were so happy about that indulgence. Thank you, Connie!
Despite living in Northern California my whole adult life, I somehow fantasized that our July stay would be free of coastal fog. Ha, not the case! My husband said it was soothing to watch the fog drift in and out, and thankfully, we had our light down jackets as well as the lap blankets provided by the Inn.
I mention this, in part, because due to current safety measures, all meals must be served outside. You can take your meal to your room, but then you miss the chance to socialize—at a proper distance, of course—with the staff and the other guests, which we think is part of the fun of staying at a small inn. Either way, whether it’s breakfast, or one of the pre-fixe dinner options, the staff ensures that food is fresh and delicious, warm when it should be, and that glasses do not go empty.
You will love this place.

Joshua and Amy are exceptional hosts/managers for this magnificent spot! The hospitality is sincere, down to earth, and generous, and the room prices are very reasonable for the area. The evening wine service, in-room treats and fantastic breakfasts (made to order or choose the special of the day) are over the top. I had the delightful pleasure of meeting the owner Rakesh, at breakfast as well.
Elk Cove Inn is a scant 15 miles south of Mendocino, but the charming village of Greenwood/Elk is well worth the jaunt. Iconic Sea Stacks, the old Cemetary at Cuffys Cove, Greenwood Beach, Gunderson Rock, and fantastic sunsets await. Near to world class beaches, hiking, wineries and the all the great restaurants in and around Mendocino (including Mendocino county's only Micheline Star restaurant right in Elk.)
Highly recommended.

A few weeks ago my husband and I spent 3 wonderful nights at Elk Cove Inn where we stayed in the historic mansion. Our ocean view room was lovely, quiet, clean, and the bed very comfortable. We spent cozy evenings in front of the fireplace while sipping the complimentary wine, and I have to say, it was the most relaxed we've felt in a long time.
We also enjoyed exploring the beach below the inn. Huge sea stack rock formations made great photography subjects, and whales in the cove entertained us all 3 mornings.
We had 2 excellent dinners and 2 breakfasts prepared by chef/owner Passalacqua, who we met when he personally served us breakfast one morning. Based on our observations, he, his wife and their staff are working extraordinarily long hours through these tough times to make their guests' stay pleasurable and safe while they deal with many new demands on their limited resources. Staff are very conscientious about COVID guidelines, sanitizing surfaces, wearing masks, serving meals outside or via roomservice, and using good ventilation practices in the buildings. We really appreciated their diligence. We look forward to a future stay the next time we visit CA, and we highly recommend this lovely inn to others.

This was our 3rd year staying at the Elk Cove Inn and it is one of our favorite places on the California coast! We always stay in one of the suites with a balcony and the views are incredible. The inn is on the beach side of the highway so you don't have to cross the street, just take the stairs down and the beach is a short walk down a path. The beach is nearly empty, pristine and peaceful...it's what I call "untouched California." Our dog loved the daily beach time and the spa is back open so my husband and I got massages too.
Make sure you book a dinner at the inn, there are so many choices and the food is amazing. They also serve local wines, which we appreciate being from California because we always want to try the local wines in the area and of course, we love to see business owners support other local business owners. We went for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday and my husband was able to rent the gazebo for dinner one night where the views are really specular. Melissa really made the night special!
My only hope is that over time they will open the main area/front desk so that someone will greet you on arrival and be available for any questions throughout the day. Also, liked it when breakfast was served inside vs. in your room, there just isn't really a great set-up in the room to eat. We opted to have our breakfast dropped off on the main outdoor deck rather than room service, which they were more than happy to accommodate.
We'll be back again next year, Elk Cove has really become our special place to go with our dog to relax and enjoy some beach time!

Elk Cove Inn is so peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. The champagne breakfasts (oh those sour dough waffles, still dreaming about them) and the three-course gourmet dinners (that you MUST NOT MISS) are both top notch. We also did the bbq one night which was great as well. There isn't much around Elk, so I'd highly recommend eating dinners at the inn, we were never disappointed and we ate there three nights. All meals are served outside.
We brought our dog who loved endless beach days - there were times when we were the only people on the beach. It's easy to social distance and we stayed in the Sam McCanse oceanfront suite which has amazing views and its own entrance from the outside. Any of the ocean front suites are worth the splurge, the private balconies and those views where you can watch the most breathtaking sunsets! And be sure to spend at least two nights, otherwise you are doing yourself a true disservice. We ended up spending four nights here and it was the perfect amount of time to enjoy the beach, relax, drink wine, read and play board games.
Victor and Melissa are so warm, welcoming and friendly and are available whenever you need anything. This was our second year at the Elk Cove Inn and can't wait to return next year. It it definitely a yearly ritual!

If you want a relaxing, quiet getaway....forget this place. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 with loud, blaring opera music that continues until noon. I did not have breakfast because Sky who greeted me on arrival, announced that they were too understaffed to bring a meal to the room. While the dinner was exceptionally tasty, (my compliments to the chef) the dated furniture and bed pillow that smelled like a combination of smoke and wet dog made for a most uncomfortable stay. With a price tag of over $900 for just a two night stay I would expect much better. Nice views when the fog recedes and nice spa tub but for the prices charged the furnishings need to be updated and they should really have better cleaning protocols. (Launder the blankets on the lounge chairs) Service was abysmal.

Since reviews are meant to be honest, and I'm getting texts and emails from this place to offer one, here is sadly our rating - it is average.
The good: beautiful scenery and gardens. Loved all their plants and views.
The bad: at check in, there were 3 young girls sitting at the dining table seemingly playing a game. we got the envelopes taped to the door, followed directions on there, and tried to find our 2 separate rooms. No luck. Knocked on the door, a girl came out and pointed both of us to the opposite sides of the main building. The two of us made maybe 3-4 circles around the building, and did not find one of the two rooms. Knocked again after all this searching, the girl came out and walked us over to the side. She said the main door to the house is not supposed to be closed (next to the spa), and so obviously it had no label on it and we couldn't find the room because that door was closed. She opened it, and one room was inside the main building behind the room where the 3 girls were playing their game/hanging out. Their laughter and noise was with me until close to midnight, and I couldn't fall asleep until that ended. Then I was rudely awoken to noise right outside my door, when the staff started working around 7am I think. Lots of slamming doors, dragging carts/equipment sounds in the hallway. It was awful.
This room was $275ish. The other room was up some stairs and slightly nicer, for $330. The "cheaper" room didn't have any lotion in the container labeled lotion. It was cold/freezing all night and I didn't find that the heater gave off any heat (nor were there instructions on it to get it to produce heat instead of just a pretty flame).
We had planned to book our hotels on the fly after this first night, and decided to leave as soon as we woke up due to the old building and bad room downstairs. After exploring the surroundings and Mendocino, we stayed at a Napa resort with a gorgeous pool the next few nights, for $325/night. That was great, no noise, great sleep and room not as old and rundown as this place's.
Suggestions:
1) if late check in is not catered to, please let your guests know at time of booking that they will receive zero help if they arrive later than whatever time you pick. Walking around at 11pm in the dark with no guidance from the 3 girls was not really great customer service after a 4.5 hour drive.
2) the room that is behind the office room should be put out of commission. There is too much noise here when they start preparing breakfast etc too early in the morning.
For the cost, both friend and I agreed that this place was not worth it. Breakfast was so-so. Will not be booking it again, and will stick to our usual places in Mendocino.

My husband and I spent my birthday weekend at Elk Cove Inn and it couldn't have been more perfect. We stayed in one of the Oceanfront Junior Suites and enjoyed our first night on our private deck in the Adirondack chairs, savoring a glass of the complimentary Port placed in the room, while taking in the spectacular sunset, all over what felt like our own private beach.
This place particularly makes its mark on the friendliness of the staff and their willingness to assist you with anything you need. It is non pretentious and the owners and managers take personal pride in every detail. I was able to see the new vegetable garden that Chef Victor built himself to provide farm to table dining.
His menus for breakfast and dinner were fabulous, and dining on the new outdoor deck with views of Greenwood Beach and the sea stacks, with our personable servers added to the experience.
Room had all the amenities that I like to have: Fluffy bathrobes and towels, flat screen TV (though we never used it as we liked the background easy listening music channel they had on that we listened to that most of the time.) Small bar with sink, refrigerator to chill our Anderson Valley wine, large seating area with comfortable chairs to view the ocean, comfortable bed, small portable tables in case you want to dine outside or inside with a view. Rooms may not be as new looking as some of the other more expensive places up the coast, but that is what makes it a hidden gem.
Thank you Rakesh, Victor, Mellisa, Dex, and Colt. Can't wait to return and see what other improvements you have in store!
