We used to live in Dana Point and would look up at the Blue Lantern Inn from the harbor and my husband always said he wanted to stay there one day as the views must be spectacular. They are. We moved to Oregon a few years ago and wanted to visit Dana Point again. We are so happy we chose the Blue Lantern Inn. It's more a small boutique hotel than a B&B. The rooms are really well done, the breakfast is amazing, and the views are to die for. The hotel does service really well -- yes you still get daily housekeeping without having to beg for it like at the bigger hotels. There are just a lot of nice little touches and the rooms are spacious and with thoughtful design so you have plenty of room to spread out. Even the balcony -- in the room if you have offers one -- has nice teak furniture with cushions and not plastic junk furniture. My only complaint -- which has nothing to do with the hotel -- is how inconsiderate some people are. They stand outside in front of the hotel at 6 am supposedly looking at the sunrise, but talking really loudly on their cell phone so everyone hears it! Don't want to disturb their own party, but it's okay for everyone else? I also had a next door neighbor doing a video call at 6:30 am on her patio! Why not inside so the rest of us didn't have to be bothered. But that's not the hotel's fault -- that is just people who have zero situational awareness. I highly recommend this property if you want peace and quiet (for the most part) and great views. And it's so conveniently located to anywhere you want to be and a number of restaurants are walkable. The staff is friendly and accommodating and they even packed muffins for us on the day we left because our departure was before breakfast. Almost felt like we were staying with family.

I LOVED the hotel and my room AND my view. It is small; personal and charming but the room was large and well -equipped. The staff could not have been more accommodating. Breakfast and the afternoon wine and cheese (and wonderful cookies) were also highlights. The hotel is on a hill overlooking the yacht basin and Pacific Ocean and the view is wonderful.

Well, a bit of a mixed review here. 1) If you get the 2 queen balcony, you will have a nice view of most of the the harbor, but you also have a large view of the boarded up restaurant next door. All boarded up, depressing looking. 2) Stan is the best customer service person there and should be promoted. The ladies at the front desk were grumpy, not real friendly to us, not sure why. 3) Oh my gosh, if you don't like huge huge hard pillows, bring a pillow. I literally couldn't sleep because the pillows hurt me (they were all huge and hard). They really should put a mixture of pillows on the bed. The first morning, I even went with a gentleman to find a pillow, and he took me downstairs to the linen room in the basement, to look for a pillow. And there was no variety. I am being truthful. The gentleman was nice and said sorry. 3) Breakfast very nice, but this is not a B&B, so breakfast starting @ 8 am is really unfair to the guests, esp with limited daylight time in fall/winter, and traffic issues to get to places like the airports. 4) If your room has the shower we had, you will literally have to crawl out of the shower, because the shower and bathroom jacuzzi is all together, so it is very very deep to get into and out of. Glad I could crawl out. 5) Appetizers in evening are very nice, but for nondrinkers, they really ought to put out some nonalcoholic drinks. We felt like we were subsidizing the drinkers, as we paid a lot for our stay. Also, appetizers are set out for only about 1-1/2 hours, so if you are not there in the set window (like 4 to 5:30? be sure to check on that), you don't get anything. (I promise, no sodas or juices or nonalcoholic bubbly were set out. I even asked the lady at the front desk for non-alcoholic beverages, and she said "sorry no," that is the only thing she said. Maybe coffee and tea were there, but that's all. We were there 2 evenings, and no sodas or juices or nonalcoholic bubblys were set out. That is the truth. 6) Dana Point is lovely. Just not a lot to do there (compared to other towns we stay at on the coast). 7) The Inn is at a dead end of kind of a residential area, and there's a gazebo but it is all fenced off, so you can't go to the gazebo, probably because the clilff there is unstable? 8) Try the bread at Beach Harbor Pizza. Yum. 9) Nice and quiet, and safe location. 10) Great parking lot. 11) Small fitness room in basement. I used it to stretch, had to move a piece of equipment to have room to set out the mat (they have a couple mats) and stretch. 11) Carpet in room needs a shampoo for sure, but otherwise the room is good. No sofa in the double queen room, but some chairs. 12) I can't believe anyone saying the Inn is walking distance to anything. Unless you are really fit and can walk a distance, the Inn is up on the cliff, and so there's walking up and down the hill, and nothing is really closeby as this is a residential area. The harbor is below. I didn't see anyone walking to places or using the cruiser bikes. Have to drive, unless you are doing a workout jog/walk in morning or something. Well, if breakfast time changed and I brought my pillow and I maybe stayed in another room that cannot see the boarded up restaurant right next door (or try to ignore the ugly sight; it's not the Inn's fault, just ruins the ambience, and the Inn really should put on the website that certain rooms will face a boarded up restaurant next door, that a large part of your view will be that (because we pay for the view, and they tout the harbor view, so let's be honest about the whole view). In any event, we maybe would stay here again, not sure. Mixed feelings.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts following your recent visit, as well as your kind comment regarding our spectacular views over Dana Point Harbor and the ocean beyond. Please know we understand pillow comfort can be subjective so we absolutely offer a variety of options and would have certainly made these available to you. In addition, we very much hope all our guests enjoy our afternoon refreshments, so have tea, coffee, soda and water available all day for those guests not wanting to partake in alcohol. These items are set out in the dining area so we are very sorry you were not aware. Please know that the inn is within a five-minute walk of several wonderful restaurants, a ten-minute walk into the vibrant town of Dana Point with its plethora of shopping, dining and entertainment facilities. There is a historic cliff walk, accessed two blocks from the hotel, that offers unparalleled scenic views and is relatively flat so has been enjoyed by the majority of our guests. The harbor below offers whale watching, day trips to Catalina, kayaking, walking and biking trails as well as numerous shopping and dining options, to name but a few. We are therefore so sorry for your disappointment with the area, as typically guests do not have enough time to enjoy everything we have to offer. We hope you will consider visiting with us again, as we would very much wish to show you the best of our inn and Dana Point.

So much potential to be great! Staying at Inns you are typically greeted with an experience that makes you feel at home, unlike your typical hotel. This was not the case. Unpleasant older women at the front desk who offer no smiles, warmth or guidance. Apparently when booking through a third party, you do not receive the same treatment as guests booking direct. Arrived early with no expectations of our room being ready. Was told it would not be long and we would be texted when room was available. Check in was at 4. 3:30 came and went, then 4:20 came and went and still no text. Finally after a third visit to the desk at 4:45 we were told they texted us, but since we booked third party, the alert was never sent. Wow. Room was very bizarre. Outdated bathroom with green tile, dirty carpeting. The best part aside from the gorgeous views was the complimentary wine and cheese. Do not expect warm treatment here as you would expect from any other inn. Great location, beautiful views, good food. Customer service needs an upgrade.

Beautiful hotel with spacious, well accommodated rooms at the end of a bluff overlooking Dana Point Yacht Marina and Pacific Ocean. Sort of a hidden gem along the Orange Coast of California. Staff warm, friendly and invested in customer happiness and service. Large Rooms with soaker-jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. Easy walking location to central Dana Point restaurant and downtown shopping areas. Must stay if visiting Dana Point/San Clemente area.

We wanted a seaside experience vacation to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday and our 25th anniversary. Blue Lantern Inn was the perfect spot to provide all those little details we had hoped for. The room was beautiful and clean, and the bed was ultra comfortable! With a fireplace and spa tub, it was what you want for a romantic getaway. Then to top it off, you walk onto the balcony and the Pacific Ocean breeze and view let you take in the moment and say, Yes this is exactly what we wanted. We couldn't be happier with our accommodations. The hotel offered bikes to borrow, and the hotel staff was kind and considerate with my many questions. They offer wine & cheese in the late afternoon, which was a really nice gathering. Fresh fruit, snacks, crackers, and many varieties of cheese! My wife is a cheese lover and we asked questions about one cheese to find out what it was. We had to go directly to the source and get the answer from Antonio the chef. He told us what it was and where it was from, and made my wife's day. He was so kind and cool, we really appreciated it. Oh and the breakfast was delish!! It had every option you could hope for, and the coffee was always great. As you can see, we loved our time at Blue Lantern Inn and highly recommend it for your couples getaway where you want to enjoy a "peace of life" and create a memory you won't forget. Close enough to Laguna Beach and many restaurants nearby, some walking or short drive. Cheers.

We decided to splurge on going to a pricier Bed & Breakfast in Dana Point. We planned it during a less expensive season (our anniversary), but I got sick. They told us we couldn't get a refund, so we planned it when we could. They told us there would be an increase in price, and we said ok. We chose an upgrade (the Pacific Edge Deluxe w/ King & patio.) The day before we checked in, we found out we did not get the upgrade we asked for. When they tried to give us a different room by splitting it up so we'd have to change rooms, we declined. It was also a $175 upgrade per night on top of our current room price. So, for around $560.00 per night, we got the Harbor View room w/ no balcony. The floor carpet had a rip down the middle of it and you could see the shower had seen better days. The pillows were too large (like many hotels.) Unfortunately, I forgot my pillow : ( They did find two smaller ones for both me and my husband the next day. The breakfasts were very plain and we served ourselves. The breads/sweets looked like they came from the local super market and the pancakes out of a box. Bacon was thin and tasteless. We often have friends over for breakfast at our home, and everything we serve is better quality food than what we ate here. My husband and I have been to many B&B's over the past 30 years. Perhaps it's because we've been primarily on the East coast (mostly Southern) or in Europe, but we've usually gotten much fancier breakfasts and more service and charm in our environment. Although, the harbor view was nice, the bed comfortable,(and the self cleaning jetted tub was nice), we felt the room was a little outdated and the price was too high compared to all the other places we've stayed.

I was worried that the hotel would not live up to all the wonderful reviews but thankfully I was wrong! We loved the quiet location at the end of the street that is next to a public overlook. This is an older property but very well maintained and housekeeping does a wonderful job keeping the main areas clean. We had a Pacific Edge Deluxe King room on the second floor and the view was fantastic. It was so relaxing to hang out on the balcony and watch the ocean. The room was clean and spacious. I was worried about noise from the room above being on the second floor, but we heard no noise. They also have an in-room wine menu which had very reasonable prices on bottles of wine. The breakfast and happy hour had great selections. (Eggs Benedict one morning and Frittata the next!) The hotel was within walking distance to plenty of shops and restaurants. We hope to return soon!
