We stayed here on two occasions, a few days apart (coming from and back to Catalina Island). The first day, we arrived early and asked the attendant behind the desk, Aris, if we could store our luggage so we could find a bite to eat. Very friendly gentleman, a credit to his profession.

When we returned, we checked in and went to our room - which was still occupied by someone! I returned to the front desk; the lady who checked us in quickly rebooked us and accompanied me back up to confirm that our room was ready for us. Very friendly service; again, a credit to her profession.

Our return visit that Friday was uneventful. Again, the help behind the desk held our luggage while we searched out lunch before our trek back to catch the train in San Juan Capistrano.

The hotel itself is situated across the street from the marina, and is within easy walking distance of the Catalina Express terminal. The hotel itself is nice, if maybe a bit dated in a late 1970s sort of way. The bed was comfortable, although I wasn't a fan of the pillows (my wife had no issues with them). The hair dryer didn't work in our first room on Monday, but in the second room on Friday, it did fine. Both rooms had a balcony with a view of the marina.

Would we stay again? Definitely. Next time, if we have a car, we'll be sure to remember there's a $15 parking fee, which I think is fair.

I had a somewhat uncomfortable experience at this hotel. Some of the staff were very helpful, but when I had to change before going to the airport, they were doing work on the downstairs bathroom, and the receptionist wouldn’t find me another bathroom to use and told me to go to the marina. After staying there of a week, it was a slap on the face to be disregarded like that. There was some vaping going on at the hotel, It was better than the vaping I have experienced at other hotels because there is not a shared ventilation system, but it was still pretty bad a couple times. One night, I was having trouble breathing. Most hotels say they are non-smoking these days, but I am experiencing more smoking than I have in my twenty years of travel due to this vaping problem that the hotels are not addressing. They claim to take smoking seriously but have absolutely no enforcement measures in place when a complaint is made. The location to the beach is amazing, but if guests are risking their health and comfort to stay there, any amenity or positive aspect is just not worth it. Hotels really need to enforce this. If you are experiencing pressure on your chest, ears popping, musty or weird smells or general air quality issues, it’s likely that someone, or many people, is vaping in a nearby room.

Hello and thank you for your third review of our property. Our Assistant General Manager is in receipt of the information that you shared with us about vaping, which we do appreciate. While we do maintain a smoke free hotel, there are occasions when guests don't always follow the rules. When staff is advised of these types of violations, we certainly do take steps to remedy the situation.

We have stayed here for over 10 years, twice a year for extended stays while I surf OC and visit family and friends. The pros; the Marina is right outside your door for long walks out to the Point or down the beach, convenient access to the beach and surf spots. Great restaurants nearby, i.e., RJ's Cafe, Chart House, Olemandi's, Ramos House, Heritage BBQ, Sonny's. A great Hot Tub and pool area to relax when staying during the week and off season. A very attentive staff that go the limit to make for a comfortable stay. The negatives: the place has been scheduled for demolition for years (20 years) to make way for the larger Harbor Renovation but to date, aside for gaining the myriad of permits the Inn has been in a holding pattern and allowed to quite frankly deteriorate despite the maintenance staff to do yeoman work to maintain the building. The rooms all have thin walls and its a crap shoot if you will be awaken at night by your next door neighbors late arrivals. For years I have been staying on the first floor for convenience. Not anymore. I stay here two-three weeks at a time so next visit I'll get a third floor room looking over the harbor and an end room at that for hopefully a quiet stay. The rooms really require renovation or demolition. The bathrooms are adequate but the showers do not drain well and for the price, other places in and around the area are cleaner and more functional.

If I could give this hotel a zero review I would. We arrived and checked in only one staff member to check in a long line of guests. They did not tell us at check in we had no hot water and the water was going to be shut off the following day. They don’t provide any service to the rooms, you have to pick up towels In The lobby. The room was not cleaned or sanitized per there advertisement. I dropped something on the
Floor and looked under the bed and there was empty coke cans and trash under both beds. The shower had hair I. It and the used soap from the prior guest. When I went to the lobby and asked if they would please clean the room since we were staying for 5 days they said they only clean it if you stay for a week. I explained to the housekeeping supervisor how dirty the room was and she argued with we along with the other lady at the front desk. She finally agreed to go in and clean up the trash but did nothing else to clean the room. The last day we extended our stay. The man at the front desk told me it was cheaper to book through my orbitz app on my phone so I followed his instructions. Sure enough we get a knock on the door the
Following day to tell us we had to move rooms. After spending over 1,000 dollars they wanted us out of our pool view room. We ended up leaving and they said they refunded us which they didn’t. Now I am working to get my funds back. We have stayed at this hotel for many years but will never return. This property is poorly managed and very dirty. The patios were not cleaned in front of the rooms and the rooms are not cleaned properly.

We have stayed here several times over the years. Just recently we came for a short 2 night stay. As always customer service was very good. We always book a room with a harbor view. It’s nice the rooms have a balcony so you can sit and enjoy the beautiful weather and the view. The pool and spa were open but unfortunately, the spa was packed. 5 adults and 6 little kids. I went and asked at the front desk about kids in the hot tub plus instructions given at check in said only 4 ppl at a time . I was told that they don’t really enforce it and to come back at night when the kids were sleeping. I wasn’t too happy about that. Also I informed them that ppl were vaping in the pool area and again apparently that’s acceptable. So needless to say we didn’t use the hot tub. Parents here’s some advice ...kids don’t belong in hot tubs !! The room was clean and the bedding and linens were comfortable. The AC in our room was awful though. Way too loud so it was nice to leave the slider open for a breeze. We’re sad to hear that in a couple of years they will tear it down and replace with I’m sure a more expensive hotel that charges resort fees and parking etc . This is just a quaint little hotel that may not be fancy but it’s clean and great location and great staff .

To whom this may concern,

My name is Shawn David, I reserved a room through the Groupon app. I had purchase a Double Queen Bed room. I wanted to treat my two daughter's and two grand babies. Before I checked in the gentlemen with the buzz cut with silver hair was rude. I let it go maybe he was having a bad day. As I checked in the room It was not what I paid for. The room was a one queen size bed. I went to back to the front desk to the same gentlemen with the buzz cut to address the issue. In a unmannerly tone he Stated that they were booked and rooms are not guaranteed and they will send a roll away. That still does not solve the issue there is a total of 5 people staying in this room. When the roll away bed arrived the gentleman was rude and seemed annoyed. We asked if we can have another roll away bed and he said no and walked away. The roll away bed is horrible the bed springs where showing and the frame rusty and unsafe. We asked for another one and they said no more beds. This is upsetting and unprofessional. So many issues employees do not wear name tags, staff is rude and not wearing mask. The fact that I paid for a two queen size bed and was given a one queen size bed and I still had to pay for a room for two beds and no one offered to refund me the difference of the rooms. Any hotel that I've said they would give me a courtesy call telling me the room is unavailable. We drove from san diego , I was trying to treat my family to a nice weekend. It ended with one of my daughter's sleeping on the floor, and four of us sleeping in one bed. BAD EXPERIENCE I ever had. this is very dissatisfying. I understand things happen but the staff did NOTHING to help and make our situation better. I work in hospitality and management and I would never ever treat my guest the way My family and I were treated.

I spent many summers at this hotel as a kid, so when my wife and I were visiting California at the end of August this year I thought it would be fun to stay there. I have given this review five stars, because of the friendliness of the staff, location and the overall condition of the facility. Yes it’s true that you won’t be staying in a super modern room, but our room was very clean and everything was in good working condition. We paid just under $200.00 a night and had a view of the harbor and I must say it was absolutely gorgeous. We considered staying at other properties, but for $170.00 a night compared to $600.00+ for an ocean view pretty much anywhere else along the coast this place is a fantastic deal. We felt very safe during our stay and the breakfast was very good. The property is very close to a beautiful beach and there are numerous good restaurants near by. My wife and I are planning another trip to California in the near future and we’ll definitely be staying at the Marina Inn.

The hotel was decent. Could use a face lift but it was clean and very close to the Ohana festival we were attending. Nothing bad or wonderful about the hotel. However, be careful how you book. We booked through hotels.com. Specifically requested a view of the beautiful harbor and that’s what we paid for. We arrived and were told that not only were we not getting our view, we only had one bed when we booked two. The front desk was less than helpful and basically just blamed hotels.com. They offered nothing to compensate for this massive disappointment. Luckily on our way out in the morning the manager was there and she refunded the extra cost of the room that we didn’t get. This was greater appreciated but didn’t change that we didn’t get what we booked and I had to share a bed with my dad...

The staff was super friendly. The pool and jacuzzi were great, but the location is the only reason to stay here if you're going to the Ohana Festival. It is walking distance, but also right next to the harbor restaurants and shops, including a little market/liquor store. The issue with the hotel itself is that it is pretty run down. The carpet (at least in our room) had many stains on it, paint was peeling, the door didn't really fit and the light from the hallway was shining in between the cracks, so much so that it lit up our room at night. The walls are basically hollow and we could hear everything going on the the next rooms. Considering we were there for the festival and just needed a place to lay our head down at night, we definitely would stay here again for that only. However, the beds were NOT comfortable. They seriously need a better mattress or mattress pad. The price was fair based on what the surrounding hotels were charging (I actually stayed 7 nights at a "better" hotel the week before this stay) and this rate was about $100 less per night. The fact that we could walk to all the restaurants AND the festival, it was totally worth it.

Double queen room for travel partner and self. Rates fair for area. Good location with good restaurants marina and beaches in walking distance. A spot to throw your gear, but nothing to spend time at the hotel for. Noisy second floor neighbor; use wall ac for white sound countering effort. Clean, and felt safe parking car there. VERY good bfast, lunch and dinner spots across streets, none of which were on their "recommended list", however, the front desk person was helpful.

Basically you park wherever there is a spot upon arrival, then upon check in they will give you a placard to hang from your review mirror throughout your stay. If you haven't already i'd suggest making a reservation before arrival as hotels in that area do sellout fairly quickly.

No...unless they've again changed the rules...call them direct...their web site does not give the best rates...you have to ask for specific discounts as well as specifying the room placement you want

Is this hotel due for renovations and/or add on of additional rooms within the next 8 months?
Answer from tony92629
Dana Point, California
Lela R. To answer your question...we are always doing something to improve the hotel. I have projects slated and in the works every year. New bathrooms - 10 to 20 per year, new mattresses (20+ per year) Kitchenette remodels, new carpets 20+ rooms per year and many other projects. This is usual business for ongoing upkeep and upgrading. Yes, some rooms are "nicer" than others and I assure you, all are on the list to have something done in time. The harbor view rooms and the pool side rooms are the best in my opinion, while the standard rooms (non-harbor, pool views) are the best value. Our hotel is an older, limited service hotel with a great location and even better value for the area. We are not a Marriott or Hyatt and do not market the hotel as such. But, we do have a passion for making your stay as enjoyable as possible. Hope that answers your question. Tony Kaspar General Manager Dana Point Marina Inn
