Nestled in a picturesque setting with Pacific Ocean vistas, the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort & Club garners praise for its well-maintained grounds and stylish, renovated rooms. Many guests laud the diverse dining options and commend the cleanliness of the resort. However, opinions on service and value diverge, as some travelers recount experiences with unprofessional staff and question the resort's pricing. While the vibrant atmosphere is a hit, the poolside music may detract from the tranquility for some.

We stayed at this property for four nights during the week. Here are my takeaways:

Locale: good. The hotel is perched up within the hills to Dana Point, providing a picturesque vista view of the ocean and sunsets. Off site dining though requires travel by car or tram.

Speaking of dining: the resort has numerous options, all being pricey as one unfortunately expects at a resort. The most accessible and broadly appealing menu is actually down at the resort’s Monarch Bay Beach Club, which requires a short tram ride.

Tram to the beach: don’t think twice about using the tram, it runs regularly on demand and is a brief ride (less than 10 minutes) down to the resort’s private beach and aforementioned beach club.

Beach: you can get umbrellas, chairs and towels for use at the beach, and often spot sea life in the fronting ocean.

Fitness: within the resort’s top notch spa we only used the exercise area / athletic club, which had a great array of weight and cardio equipment. It also contains one of the three resort pools.

Rooms: well-appointed and comfortable, with a very nice bathroom with Aesop products. In addition to the Nespresso machine with a few complimentary pods, there is a selection of goods to purchase in room. Unfortunately there is not a min fridge to use. Balcony is small.

The hotel apparently hosts a lot of events, and not sure if you can avoid the noise from them during your stay. On Thursday night of our stay, there was an outdoor dinner reception on the lawn in front of our room, which included loud music until 10:00 pm

Parking: Valet only. $70 night

Just got back from out first stay at Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach. What a beautiful place with wonderful polite and friendly staff. The grounds are immaculately maintained and manicured. Hallways are bright, clean and pristine, if not a bit of a maze for the novice guest!
We were lucky enough to get a very desirable room location overlooking the golf course and the Pacific Ocean on the horizon, and sitting on the balcony in early morning or late evening you could hear the waves crashing. Room itself was fresh and bright and well stocked with all you could want to make your stay comfortable, but… the room did have one issue which actually was quite annoying, but didn’t seem worth asking to move for: In the small room containing the toilet there was an air vent that 24/7 had the rumble/drone of some kind of heating/ventilation fan motor. It was reminiscent of being on a plane going across the country or the Atlantic and hearing the noise of the engines as you tried to sleep. Yes, it was a sort of white noise, but loud enough to not be conducive to a good night’s sleep, constant and not a function of the AC controls in our room. Such a shame as the room lent itself to being able to hear a pin drop due to lack of guest in adjoining rooms… I think we pretty much had the area around us to ourselves.
Restaurants were very good and practically enjoyed Bourbon Steak for our “fancy” meal, but also liked the Monarch Bay Beach Club for dinner (fun taking the tram) and Club 19 for breakfast. We didn’t try AVEO Table & Bar.
Hope to make it back one day, maybe with a different room!

Major highlights:
-Rooms renovated recently and are very well appointed and very comfortable.
-Love the turndown service and nice 5 star touches that have not all returned to the same caliber after the pandemic, but here, they do it very well.
-pool area and pool bar/restaurant service was fantastic
-walking trails, running maps and tram to the beach!
-lobby area is perfect for working from the hotel. Lots of seating, outlets, and a very comfortable environment.

So-so:
-They seem to charge an auto porterage/housekeeping tip which we were not notified about. Didn't love this.
-Restaurant food was average for the standard 5 star price point.
-Had to call to request housekeeping service the second day of our stay. The positive was the room attendant was a delight and came quickly and was very prompt after.

Luxury comes with a high price tag and high expectations. Overall, a very enjoyable stay.

Although I have stayed here several times in the past, this current experience was so abysmal that I will never stay at this location or with the Waldorf Astoria brand again.

The series of unfortunate events began pointedly at check-in. Because I booked through AMEX FHR, I am eligible for a room upgrade when available. When I began to inquire about the upgrade, the staff member immediately cut me off to state it would not be possible due to a wedding; however, the person checking in to my left with the same AMEX FHR benefits were provided the upgrade. I assumed I was unlucky regarding the upgrade, but I could not shake how rude the staff member was and hoped the remainder of the stay with change my experience.

Unfortunately, it just got worse from there. Apart from one bellman, the staff members in the valet and pool were rude, snarky, and made it seem as if you are an inconvenience. Additionally, the hotel evidently did not plan for the higher occupancy for the wedding and holiday weekend as the cleaning staff were so understaffed we did not have a room cleaning until after 5 pm.

Overall, I was so uncomfortable and unhappy I could not wait to return home, which is quite unfortunate if you are looking for a restorative and energizing weekend away. If you are considering staying at this hotel, I strongly advise you to consider otherwise as it is extremely likely you will be severely disappointed and upset.

We had high hopes for this Waldorf, but sadly ended up badly disappointed. First the positives, we were greeted warmly by Nathan in valet, Lyle at the bell desk, the wonderful drivers Jack and Tyler, and the service at the beach club and Aveo were excellent.

Now for the negatives. Upon check in, our room had a funny smell which we couldn't figure out immediately. Also, a unsolicited member of housekeeping rang our doorbell twice and immediately let themselves in before we had a chance to get to the door just shortly after we checked in, which was fine, but then he just backed out when he saw us without explaining why he entered? We put the DND on our door afterwards, and as we finally dozed off, the room phone rang 3 rings but when we answered there was no one on the other line. So we called front desk to inquire if they needed to speak with us and they said no.

Once we got up from our nap, we found out that the funny smell was coming from the mini fridge and there was leftover spoiled eggs and food from the previous guests. No big deal, we'll ask housekeeping to remove it when we leave our room for dinner. We called up to inform them we were leaving and let them know about the stuff in the fridge and also ask for turndown service and to retrieve our car from the valet. We made sure the DND light was off and left.

At the valet, we see our car and try to get in it, but was stopped by both the valet and another guest, informing us that it was not our car and letting the guy drive off with our car. We insisted that they were mistaken, had our ticket to prove it and had to escalate the issue until someone finally got ahold of the other guest, who had already driven our car to a different hotel, and we had to stand there and wait nearly an hour until we got our car back. This made us late to our important appointment. The other guest appeared angry and annoyed at us for the inconvenience when he returned. We informed an apathetic front desk of this and asked for this incident to be noted to the GM, but still haven't heard anything back from anyone at the hotel. For a hotel that only has mandatory valet at $70 a day, they should do better.

After returning from our dinner, we entered our room and found that housekeeping didn't come. The rotten food was still in the fridge, the towels were not refreshed, no turndown service, nothing. By this time it was after 10pm, so we just didn't want to deal with it and tried to relax by our little fireside terrace, so we sat down in our robes and tried repeatedly to start the fire pit, but it would not turn on. There was also no s'mores kit or wine to be found in the room. Frustrated, we just went to bed and left the next day.

We had hoped that we would have a relaxing stay at this property, but ended up stressed out and not relaxed at all.

This Waldorf is unlike the ones you have been to. It is really more of a wellness spa and not just a luxury hotel. Don't get me wrong it is a 5 star luxury hotel. It is stunning. The Ritz was booked for some of the days we were gone so we tried the Waldorf. It did not disappoint at all.

Like other luxury hotels in the area this place is very expensive, and some of it bugs me. Not only are you paying for your room, valet and taxes they also charge for most of the things you want to do there. This includes a resort charge with WiFi any and all fitness classes, beach towels (now this is nuts) , chairs & umbrellas, preferred green fees, beach games (are you kidding me), and any tram to the beautiful beach. Some I totally get and others are just silly. Now, I will be back. But I am never going to pay to play a game with others or for beach towels. We did not golf so I have no opinion on whether the cost is worth it, and I also have no idea how many holes it has. It is pretty and I do get the idea of a green fee, but beach towels, just no.

The entire property is beautiful. It rests on top of a seaside bluff on some 175 acres in Dana Point. There is a private beach club, three pools (no fee), oceanfront golf, an amazing luxury spa and wonderful views.

You can become a member of their spa, and fitness area. I have no idea of the cost. They offer every spa treatment you want and the service is great.

We loved the pools and the views. The food is great there. This is another of you don't have to leave if you don't want place. Peace and quiet seekers will love this place and if you are into spa and wellness services, this is the place for you.

All the guest rooms have a private terrace or patio. The rooms are so pretty. The beds are ever so comfortable. The housekeeping service is great. Our view was wonderful. There was nothing there that I needed that I did not have in my room.

The service is just so kind and calm. We loved it. Save your pennies, this will cost you. Go for a special occasion or to just detox from the busy world.

Stayed here twice. You can see they had a renovation recently of the room so every part of room is pretty new and worth the price, when considering their price is actually decent compared to other luxury hotel in Laguna. Service is remained in a high level even during weekends and holidays. They have a beautiful private beach club where you can dine there as a hotel guest. Common area is big and the food is delicious. Personally, this is a high quality resort in US and will come back in the future.

The resort is beautiful and well maintained. The rooms were comfortable with a lot of attention to detail. The bathrooms were spacious and nice, and I really liked the shampoo and conditioner, The service was mostly good, though when we arrived there was no one at the front desk for at least 5 minutes, and another quest was already waiting. Housekeeping was thorough and responsive. As others have mentioned, the food is very expensive, as is any other service offered, so be prepared to pay a lot. The part and parcel cafe was the best place to get coffee, and the sandwiches were not bad. I loved all of the trails walking down to the beach and around Dana point. The whole area is very nice and well maintained. It is quite a way to the beach from the hotel, so that is not very convenient. The pool was nice, but it was too cold when we were there to really enjoy, so we only used the hot tubs.

The actual facility is very nice, although it does have a certain air of being a hotel that hosts a lot of conferences. The beach club dining was great. However, for over $2,000 a night for a room it was below par for two critical reasons: 1. The mattress is the absolute worst I have ever experienced in a high-end hotel. It was uneven. I ended up every night sliding out to the edge. It's the kind of mattress you'd expect at a budget motel. 2. The hot water is a joke. It literally takes ten minutes to get warm. And this is true regardless of the time. They need to have recirculating pumps in the hot water system--otherwise you're wasting more water letting it warm up vs. your actual shower. If I come again I would stay at the Ritz or Montage.

We had overall a nice time at this property, but I had a bad experience at the end. The property itself is beautiful and in a lovely location. Our toddlers loved riding the beach tram. Food was pretty good although pricey which is to be expected for a WA. The staff was very friendly and upgraded us to a fireplace terrace room as Diamond members which was very nice.

However, upon checking out, they charged me for the final night’s parking twice (at $70/night). They said because I used a Hilton free night certificate I couldn’t consolidate that night’s reservation with the rest of my stay, which is fine. On our last day we ate at one of the restaurants and charged to the room so there was about $114 charged to my room that last night including the $70 parking fee. The morning I checked out they charged another $70 which would be a duplicate parking charge.

When I returned home, I called their guest services desk and mentioned the extra charge asking them to reverse it. They said the extra charge would drop off within 10 business days of checking out. Two weeks after I had checked out I called back twice to follow up, leaving a voice message about my case and no one contacted me. I was forced to dispute the charge on my credit card to get the $70 back. I did not expect this lack of service from a WA and I would expect a much higher level of customer care from this brand. It was a disappointing way to end the trip and now I am leery about staying at another WA.
