We did a three day hike of the magnificent Stórurð and the deserted inlets. We stayed at Álfheimar Country Hotel, which provided accommodation, full board and guides at a very reasonable price. The location by the sea is superb, offering great views. The food is hearty and locally sourced and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. Highly recommended.

This hotel and travel service is a small, family run business located in the village Bakkagerði, of the stunningly beautiful Borgarfjörður Eystri, NE-Iceland. I participated in a 3 days hiking tour organised by Álfheimar/Elftours Ltd. this July. The hiking event was extremely well organised - a great experience. The service was very friendly and efficient, thhotel was spotlessly clean, rooms and showers comfortable. The food was very good and made from fresh local ingredients. The atmosphere was relaxed and very welcoming. Definitely worth visiting and revisiting. Not my last time there !

As the name suggests, the Alfheimer is a Country Lodge providing basic accommodation services. The two young ladies catering for guests needs are very charming and helpful. Wifi worked very well and breakfast was good. The lodge is a great place to visit the Puffin colony which is just 10 minutes drive away.

The guest house dormitory was extremely noisy as everything echoed in it. You could hear everything through the walls. It was clean and the beds were comfy for twin beds. Towels were softer than most. We stayed here two nights and the hostess/owner wasn’t overly friendly or talkative like most. However the young lady with red hair in the dining room was exceptional. friendly and ready with a smile. The breakfast was adequate like most of Iceland. The big log and rocks you had to climb over to get to the boardwalk connecting the buildings was a little cumbersome with luggage. We had dinner here and most thought the meal was fine of soup, fish, salad and potatoes and couscous. Pricing was inconsistent with meal and drinks. Some seemed to overpay and other underpaid. Soup bread and water was 2500 isk while full meal and 3 beers was 4200 and others were charged 4400 for just meal no drink. No one knew if drinks were included or not. One night is sufficient here.

Room Tip: Very tiny town with really only the puffin colony nearby. Nothing else.

I stayed at the Alfheimar Country Hotel on a 6 day G Adventures hiking trip. The Alfheimar offers 3 and 5 day guided hiking packages. I would highly recommend the longer version as there is so much to see in the area. The rooms were spacious, the beds were comfortable and I could go on and on about the food! The owner and his delightful daughter were our guides and they were terrific!

Super cool hotel, with all wood interior for the rooms. Nice shower and bathroom, toilet that were all super clean on arrival with great smelling soap. The hotel is right on the edge of the water with amazing views.
The staff are ALL super. They are kind, professional and accommodating. We truly loved our experience and would return in a heart beat... I’m actually sad we are not staying another night.
We ventured out on the town to check out the one restaurant for dinner but they turned us around because they were fully booked and were kind of rude. We returned to this fine establishment where they served up a delicious meal!
Thank you so much for a 5 out of 5 stay :D

Did the 3 day hiking tour with a friend and we loved it! So easy for it to be all inclusive with airport transfer, hikes, food, and hotel. Artie the owner was so thoughtful and accommodating. These are hikes you might not see otherwise - off trail on sheep trails and full of stories and local legends. Just pack your snacks and layers!

The hotel is nice and clean - yay hot water. The chef even made me a special plate as a vegetarian with allergies. The family style dinner and breakfast buffets were great.

I was also able to run around that area in the morning, cute little town. Highly recommend it if you enjoy hiking and totally worth going to East Iceland, it's gorgeous!

This is a lovely, if basic, family run hotel. The owner-manager sang songs for us in the evening, and took our group on a tour of the area the following morning, and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic - wonderful evening meal buffet. The one big problem was that the wifi didn't work in the bedrooms.

Wonderful experience! We stayed in room 23 with a lovely view of the bay and mountains. The proprietor was a tall jolly elf named Arngrimmur (I think) who was born in a little house nearby that we could see from the dining room window. His family served a delicious dinner of the catch-of-the-day with veggies and potatoes, plus an exceptional curry soup and freshly baked bread. Our room was in the third red building, big and bright and newly done, immaculate, warm comforters, big bathroom, endless hot water in the shower. Super nice staff. Felt so warmly welcomed. We loved the puffins on the far side of the bay!

Having been a tour guide on and off in Iceland for 20 years I can say that the reception in Álfheimar is the kind of reception that makes me proud to be an Icelander. A part of me wishes that this hidden nature pearl to stay hidden forever. But another part of me wishes this place to get all the good clients they deserve. The owner and staff in Álheimar have been extremely helpful giving tips on the best hikes around. Borgarfjörður Eystri is hands down one of my favorite places in Iceland. And God knows there are many places to choose from.
