Staying at Viglatoras gave our family a true insight into the Greek way of life and a beautiful Greek family. Outstandingly welcoming, friendly hosts. Delicious breakfast provided and at a very good price for the quality and variety. Only a 20 minute drive from Heraklion and day trip distance to many other sights. Simple, traditional accommodation with everything you need. I would plan for 2-3 nights to get the cultural insight, more if you’re wanting to go on hikes and visit caves in the surrounding region.
Yanis and Anastasia were kind and generous hosts at this charming cottage, which is set in beautiful surroundings and with mountain backdrop. The main house is perfectly maintained as a ‘museum’ and testament to Anastasia’s family history. Anastasia looked after our accommodation and comfort, whilst Yanis introduced us to villagers, village life and ‘raki’ production. The authentic local experience added another dimension to our holiday. Thank you.
If you want to find some peace and quiet, this is the place. Anastasia was very welcoming and helpful and the accommodation was basic Cretan design and spotlessly clean. It is like going back in time in the village of Sarchos. The roads, roadsigns and local drivers can be very challenging but it all adds to the excitement of the holiday!
From the onset, Yanis went out of his way to make sure we found the place and were comfortable. His welcoming nature and hospitality left us feeling that we were his guests rather than just customers. The accommodations are splendid. The apartments are rustic and beautifully made, but have all the amenities you'd want from a modern place e.g. AC, wifi. Outside is just beautiful, you walk out into a vibrant garden with views of hills in the background with all the splendor of Crete. Great place for some peace and relaxation, and the city of Heraklion is just 25 mins away. But the true attraction here, is the estate, countryside, and people of the area. Viglatoras and its hosts take you into their world for an authentic experience of rural Cretan life that is very hard to find otherwise if you are just a visitor. Would definitely return, and highly recommend.…
Anastasia and her family (I mustn't forget Maria!) are warm, generous, extraordinary people. I felt completely welcomed into their home. My maisonette surpassed what I had seen on their website - I immediately fell in love with it. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and so peaceful. I got exactly what I was expecting of my time there. The food was wonderful - so much of it!! The people I met there just enhanced the experience and our "party" at the taverna (thank you Yannis) was so much fun. I would go back in a heartbeat - and fully intend to. This was my introduction to Crete and an experience I will never forget.
We stayed 3 days (two nights) at this wonderful place! It is not faraway from Heraklion (about 20 km) and the landscape till you arrive there is amazing! The real beauty of Crete! Maria and Michalis, are the landlords of this wonderland. The central building has a long history, made of stone. As you step in you just step back in time. Every single corner and wall is deorated with antique furnitures and unique decorative old and unique gadgets. Maria may prepare you from a delicious breakfast to a yummie cretan and not only meal! The garden is a gorgeous and peaceful place for relax. All rooms have an original cretan character, in two levels where upstairs there is a confy bed with a wardrobe and a wonderful window with olive groves and mountain view, where downstairs there is an original cretan fireplace and a couch, and a kitchenette with a bathroom. The roof is made of wood as well as the hardwood floors. It was a wonderful week-end and we will return for sure in the future!…
The owners are really warm and make you feel better than home. They take care of every single detail. Excelent place to be in touch with local and very nice people that make you feel like they are your family.. You shouldn't leave without tasting their homemade cakes. Magnificent accomodation in a beautiful and peaceful area surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. If you want to relax this is the place! Away from the busy and noisy tourist resorts but close enough to every interest area. Highly recommended!
It is a peaceful place with nice people who cheerfully attend the guests. Quietness, pleasant environment, good meals. You can enjoy of pleasant conversation or time scrolling by reading, painting, writing and so on. A highly advisable place to unwind and to find oneself again. The luxury of a rural cozy treasure. We spend five days they should have been longer. Francesc and Mariona. Barcelona. Catalunya
We were landing in the main city of Heraklion from Santorini and knew we didn't want to spend any time in Heraklion so we decided to book a nights stay somewhere out of the way in the mountains where we would organise a hire car and make our way to Southern Chania. The ferry, late in Santorini, got to Heraklion Port about 5am. I had instructions of how to get to Viglatores which i explained to the taxi driver as best as I could, after finally finding one that would agree to take us there.... Worn out and tired we didn't really realise how much time had passed until we got to the town Sarhos and couldn't find Viglatores.... Long story short the taxi driver had taken us to the wrong town... "Ah you mean Sarhos not Sarhos!" he said. Little did we know Zorhos and Sarhos sound exactly the same except Zorhos is about an hour in the opposite direction. When we finally got there at 7:30am the hosts were wonderful, understanding we just needed to sleep and did her best at giving the taxi driver a stern talking to for not following her instructions..... So a word of warning - if your taxi trip takes more than 20min insist on them stopping and calling Viglatores for instructions! Staying at Viglatores was indeed therapuetic and I only wish we were able to spend more time there, we got treatment above and beyond what we expected and had the best lunch and dinner in their home. There was always fresh grapes and Raki on our table, our bed was comfy and it was nice to wash away the troubles of the road in a deep bath with beautiful brass fixtures. Exotic tapestries on the walls, loft bed and built-in sofa's give it a gypsy feel. We visited Knossos while we were there as it wasn't far away.…
We stayed here for the start of a two week visit to Crete. It was a great location - about 30mins from Heraklion and easy to find from the airport. Once you leave the heat and noise of Herkalion you end up on easy to navigate roads that lead you up into the hills and away from the bustle. Sarhos is a very small village - I think it has maybe two bars/tavernas - typically quiet and low key. Nothing touristy about the place what so ever. Sarhos is a great location for exploring some of the hill towns and villages and getting a real taste of local life. The accomodation is made up of very simple galleried rooms. Downstairs a small sitting area with traditional Cretan decoration, a small kitchen and a bathroom - with a lovely bath for a change! Stairs lead up to the gallery with bed, dresser, wardrobe. Very sweet and ours was perfect for two. The owners were charming - welcomed us with a cold drink and delicious homemade pastries and even shared their supper with us one night when they had had a big family feast. The most delicious roasted lamb you could ask for! Vigliatoras is also just perfect for resting, reading and unwinding for a few days. The gardens have hamocks and chairs for sitting out in and there is a bbq area where you can cook your own supper, play a bit of backgammon and listen to the crickets...would go back tomorrow.…
