We stayed at the Beach Villas as we have in the past. We knew things were limited because of Covid and we were glad they were taking precautions. We just didn’t think almost everything at the hotel would be closed. Nothing was open for breakfast except for the coffee shop any day we were there. Most nights nothing was open for dinner except the bar. While we knew that housekeeping wouldn’t be entering our room we expected towels to at least be picked up from in front of our room instead of left next to the door for days. We also expected that the employees would be properly wearing their masks. Several were not and several days in a row the concierge was not nor did she know what was open and continual gave incorrect information. The one dinner we ate in the restaurant they were out of their sake. The Beach Villas bills itself as a premier experience within the Del and the Del itself bills itself as an exceptional hotel and the prices charges are exorbitant. My wife loves visiting so I am sure we will return but before anyone considers a visit, confirm they are actually operating and not pretending to be operating while charging the same prices.…
Read a few bad reviews lately so I wanted to tell you my experience....IT WAS GREAT! A birthday trip we won't forget. Please remember this is a historic hotel...it is OLD ---there aren't elevator banks on every floor (I thought the old small elevator was really cool, I could imagine how it must of looked) and each room is different and unique. The service was excellent. I came with my daughter for her birthday. I think they did a great job setting up check-in in the courtyard. Everyone I encountered was nice, friendly, sincere and there to help make sure I had a great stay. ***On a side note, I appreciate these people being there, helping me, working in masks in the heat and/or sun with a good attitude. I get irritated wearing the mask in this weather not working!**** As a Hilton Gold Member we were upgraded and it made our trip! We will never forget the amazing view! Food is expensive, but there are always ways around that (Get a bagel instead of the breakfast sandwich). There are many nearby restaurants within a short walk. Save the nice meal for the hotel if you'd like. Walking the area is cute and quaint. We visited a couple shops and enjoyed the vibe of the city. All the food and drinks we had at the resort were great. The drinks are strong so you don't feel like you got ripped off. Pool service was great! It was quick and friendly. The pool was heated pretty well, we were able to walk right in on all occasions except one which was only momentarily. My daughter got her phone wet and the front desk brought a dish of rice up right away. I don't understand the bad reviews, we had an exceptional trip. The grounds are clean and beautiful. You are on the beach. The resort has all the amenities you could need between the stores, snack shops and restaurants. The rooms have refrigerators and Keurig's. I think they did a great job staying open and taking care of us when most things are closed. I do think this hotel is worth it at least once. It is a memorable experience.…
We live in San Diego and came here for a weekend staycation at the beach. The main lobby is currently under construction so the rooms are discounted, but frankly not enough. A good chunk of the grounds are closed due to renovations and covid; which was disappointing but not unexpected. The portion of the grounds you are still able access is very nice. The pool area is great; clean and not overly crowded. The beach area is also great, but is open to the public so can get pretty busy during peak hours. The rooms are awful. We stayed in the Victorian building. We were aware that it is an old building and expected some eccentricity; but it was unacceptably bad. I have back-packed across Europe staying in hotels and hostels that we’re often hundreds of years old. I am not overly persnickety; I know what to expect in older properties. Never in my travels have I stayed in such a poorly maintained facility. Walking down the hallway has a “fun house” feel as the floors are so un-even they actually feel like a rollercoaster and different additions over the years have left every hallway a different width. The carpet is stained, pilling and uneven. The floor boards creak with every step. There is not a single wood panel or door jamb that is not chipped, repainted a dozen times and peeling. The furniture in the room is also chipped and peeling. All of the rooms are a slightly different size; which is to be expected in an older building. But, instead of purchasing furniture for each room individually so that it fit properly- they bought the same furniture for every room and shoved it in. As a result the space between our door, bed and desk was only about 8 inches and you had to physically lift your suitcase over the bed to get it into the room. The windows were swollen and almost impossible to open. The fixtures in the bathroom were literally falling off the walls. To put it bluntly- if I were staying at a motel six I would have complained about the quality of this room. Again- I understand that this is an old building. But this is a four star hotel. And even during the pandemic, with a renovation discount the rooms are north of 300$ a night after taxes and fees. This level of disrepair is simply unacceptable. If your planning a trip to Coronado, stay elsewhere and come to the Del’s grounds for a visit. …
This is clearly more than a 3 star hotel but since I with many hundreds of other lookers only wandered through the public areas gawking at the magnificent setting I can't speak to the actual hotel stay. I would imagine that as a guest you would get sick of the tourists that pack the place during the day but hey its one of the iconic hotels in the US and very much worth a look. Lovely grounds right on the beach and I imagine 5 star service. Not that it's important but there was an alarming number of unattractive old men with stunning young women on their arms which gives you and indication of the clientele and affluence needed to stay at this lovely hotel. Not to be judgmental but I imagine the car park was full of Corvettes. Worth a look but not sure if its worth staying there.
The hotel Del is a great historic property on the beach in Coronado just across the bridge from San Diego. Hotel is on a limited schedule. Not easy to navigate as you do need to do keep your bearings getting back and forth to your room. Gift shops and pool are open and patio seating was available for food and beverage. Patio was nice having fire. Service was adequate and is on a first cove first serve basis. You do need to keep an eye out for tables paying or you will not find a seat as it still Seems to be a busy time
