Hotel del Coronado has a prime seaside location, but it is a very busy hotel that lacks in amenities or personal service. Our "Views" room was clean, with a lovely ocean vantage, adequate storage, and comfortable beds, and we appreciated the contemporary, uncluttered decor. However, the value wasn't there at $1300+ a night. The bathroom was cramped, and we were provided few towels at a time and only basic toiletries. The room was also small, with little floor space around the two queen beds, and some items in our room were broken. Staff vacillated between obsequious and indifferent, and they could not always provide the service they promised, such as delivering luggage to our room promptly. There seem to be management issues here, as the line to check in or ask questions of the concierge was exceedingly long at all times. We were charged a bunch of resort fees for things like yoga classes that we were given no information about, and $75 a day (not including tips) for valet. So there are a lot of inflated or "junk" fees on top of the already high room rates. I would not stay here again because I don't see the value, and there are places that give a more relaxing experience for the money. …
Rising up over the Coronado skyline there are two iconic landmarks; the Coronado bridge, which is a marvel of engineering, and Hotel del Coronado. Cooling off on a hot, sunny day, we enjoyed very reasonably priced ($11) beers on the expansive veranda. Great vantage point for people-watching and occasional fly-overs from the naval bases.
There are some great aspects to this resort, and my family made some good memories in spite of the situation described below. That is why I am giving it a 2 out of 5. Very specifically though, this review is to inform other potential travelers about the beach sewage contamination issue before they spend this kind of money. We did not know about this issue until we first arrived at the beach...and I mean the advertised Hotel Del Coronado beachfront which is a primary focus for what I believe would be the majority of travelers. Right when you get to the sand, you see the small yellow signs with red circles around and red lines through freestyle swimming stick figures warning beach visitors that the there is a sewage contamination at that beach and that you should not get in the water. That same contaminated water is the water that is hitting you and your kids in the face with the ocean spray, that people are playing with in the sand, that's falling on you as rain, etc. About halfway into our weeklong trip, we started reading some of the San Diego-area publications regarding the beach sewage contamination. Those publications go into detail about all of the illnesses and diseases associated with exposure to the contaminated ocean water, spray and rain. As we read article after article, we started to feel embarrassed that we had even taken our kids into the situation so blindly. We felt embarrassed that we spent so much money without even looking into it. At that point, we didn't really want to be anywhere near the beach or the spray, which is a problem on a trip to a beachfront resort. I strongly encourage anyone considering this resort to read up on this sewage issue before you book a trip here. Ocean front is extra, if you can believe that... ;)…
The lobby, halls, and common areas are meticulously remodeled, and you can feel a magical quality throughout the property. Our guest room was dark, drab, and worn however. All magic gone once we opened the door. Room was functional, but not as nice as the Best Western we stayed the night before. The Hilton Honors $15 per person breakfast credit didn't make a dent in the $46 weekday buffet, but this is a fancy place, after all. Perhaps with a more cheerful room I would have enjoyed the place a bit more.
If I could give this hotel 0 stars I would. Terrible service, from the wait staff, restaurants, hotel pool staff. Hey HOTEL DEL CORONADO -newsflash! It's Spring Break! You are going to be extra busy during spring break. These people all ran around like chickens with their heads cut off, wondering why on earth they are so busy. Had the worst service and meal I have ever experienced - anywhere in the world - on the Sun Deck. Waited well over an 90 minutes for food, only to have it arrive cold and sub par. We would have gone elsewhere, but we were too afraid of getting worse service. No apology from the waiter. No explanation other than "we are busy." Yeah, no S*** Sherlock. It's Spring Break. Catch a Clue. The rooms in the main building are absolutely awful. Not vacuumed well. Dirty and dusty. Cobwebs in the corners. Tub in the bathroom doesn't drain. Bathrooms are not updated at all. Moldy and VERY outdated. The bathroom is the size of my powder room and not as nice as a La Quinta Inn. Just absolute garbage. And for the "low, low price of $1700/night. Don't be fooled by the pictures online. These are not the main guest rooms. Everything about this place screams high end, crap hole. The main pool area was so trashed by 3pm you hardly wanted to walk around without sandals on. Garbage all over. Garbage cans overflowing. Disgusting towels everywhere and pool attendants standing around like they weren't sure what to do. Hey! Here's a thought! Grab a bag and start picking up trash! Or better yet - pick up trash AND towels. Whoever manages this hotel should be fired. I have stayed at nicer hostels in Europe for $50 Euro/night. What an awful experience. Will not return. …
I have stayed at this grand dame many times and it is still one of my favorite hotels in the country for work or play. This was the first time I had been back since the massive expansion after it underwent when it was purchased by Hilton. The new meeting facilities, which we used extensively, were wonderful and fit in seamlessly with the rest of the hotel. All in all, it was another great experience and I will be back soon.
Promised Diamond upgrade to Ocean View when booked. Arrived & told policy only allows upgrade to 'next' level which doesn't include ocean view. 'Upgraded' to noisy rm over front entrance w/no view BAD
People working there are Terrible the property is beautiful but the vallet was rude and left us standing in the rain arguing with me about where my room was (this was on arrival how would I know that) the we were given our room (a suite witch is a significant amount more than a standard room) they sent us down a hallway with 13 full stinky laundry carts to a room with a view of a wall and the whole place smells. They had us literally in a room at the end of the service corridor. Then we complained and asked to be moved (not unreasonable I think) they then told me I would have th pay a ton more to get moved. We left and won't return. Again Terrible people and terrible service. Just skip this hotel you can do alot better
Beautiful and well maintained property. I stayed in a room close to the ocean, not in the main building. Newer construction and very spacious king size room. I enjoyed walking around the property each day. Food and drinks were good. You have easy access to the beach and a trolley into San Diego.
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado the weekend before Valentine's Day. The weather was a bit cold, but dressing in layers helped with our daily morning walk along the beach looking for sea shells and at the beautiful view. The sunsets here are like no other! Especially when enjoying a drink and some fish tacos from the Taco Shack. The hotel is gorgeous and the staff was wonderful. Our room was beautifully decorated and the bed comfy. Loved it! We had a balcony that overlooked the gorgeous courtyard. We also heard a few parrots flying about in the early morning. What a delight! We took the Legendary Tour and learned so much more about The Del than we already did. We pretty much stayed on the island all weekend enjoying the hotel, views, local shops and restaurants that were an easy walk, easier by car. We learned the main hotel will be closed next year for renovations of all the rooms. I like the hotel and it's decor as is and will miss the pretty umbrella wallpaper in the halls. But I'm also excited to see The Del in her new splendor. The Del has her quirks due to her age, but at 135 years old, she's in wonderful shape! I'm especially in awe of the staircases and the uneven floors. Imagine all the people that have walked her stairs and halls from 1888 till now. Amazing! Definitely staying again! I absolutely love it here!!!…
